You have turned this into a superb geographical thread-you have me mesmerised and it looks like a few others too. I know as much about China as I know about constructing three dimensional rotational graphics but thanks to you I now know a little about this fascinating country.

Thank you for posting

Reb

Now I took several Modern China credit courses in University, but only learned geography and geo-politics of post-revolution China, and this was during the active Cold War. No pictures like H's were ever offered by my professor, who was a former station-chief in Moscow,Beijing and HK in the 60's and 70's. I would have loved to have had images like these in classes to provide a little more reality.

No Smoking signs everywhere you looked – and the air was just a haze of tobacco smoke. The old folks in China are absolutely brilliant and pretty funny the way they shamelessly take advantage of their age. They can get away with just about anything they like cos of the ingrained respect for Senior Citizens among the general population, and I for one, Just Luv Em.
They don’t care for rules in any shape or form and just do what they like.
Wait for walk/don’t walk ?? You’ve gotta be kidding – they just cross the road as the whim takes them.
Line up at supermarket tills ?? Don’t be daft, they just go to the front of the queue.
No smoking in elevators ?? Ho-Ho-Ho.
Litter ?? Och, some young person will pick it up and put it in the trashcan for them.
They take advantage of the ancestor worship thing right to the wire and it’s hilarious just watching them do it.
After all, they’ve earned those little indulgences.

Alex, Reb, Mike and Jeff, sorry it looks like I've been unappreciative of your collective comments - the internet connections have been particulary bad during the past couple of days.
I'm genuinely amazed at the amount of interest these snaps have generated, and am encouraged to try and top these ones in July. I already have plans for some of the places we're going to visit, and I've let the cat out of the bag on them - but there's a couple of other specials I think I'll keep up my sleeve until I post them in around 10 weeks time.

Thanks Guys

So, why has Missus H decided to stop a tree from falling over? Dunno, she’s Chinese – so it’s beyond me. Nuff Sed.
