Rare Items Popping Up? (1 Viewer)

Again I don't think we should post names of people or dealers, but as

Pierre has pointed out he has had several problems so members could send

him a message (if he wouldn't mind) if they were interested in the details,

which might influence them if they were going to do business with the same

folks.

Damian asked about a list of Rare items in reality there are probably to many

early items to list. If you go to Bill Sagers site and spend a little time you will find

a great resource of images, and lists of just about everything made...along

with some great photos of some really interesting collections. That would

really be the place to start.

Brad you are up to 3000 items.....pretty cool.....here is my secret I save

every sale by image item number and selling price. I can pull up the file look

at the images and view the various prices.

Also if anything happened to me 120mph crash on Harley with UFO wife

would have image to go with item number and value.......cause I know she

isn't going to do the research! She would simply sell the stuff by the pound!!

Hey tomorrow is a Holiday........hope everyone enjoys the long

weekend! I'm looking forward to French Toast and a plate full of Jimmy Deans

in the morning!!!!

The problem with your post, which you take great pains to defend but ultimately you cannot do, is that you said dealers, not a specific dealer, are not our friends. You grouped all dealers together. Apparently, based upon your explanation, this is not what you meant.

However, when you first posted, you should have taken the time to explain that you were referring to certain dealers, not all dealers. That is the hallmark of good writing.

Indicting a whole group of people because of the acts of some dealers was simply the wrong thing to do.

Did I take it personally? Yes, I did, Shannon, George Guerriero, Bill Sager and the Nevilles are my friends so I think you owe them an apology Pierre.

Sorry to tell it but your post does not have any substance and is again insulting which is the easiest thing to do.

Maybe that you are considering Shannon, George and Bill as your friends but are they considering you as one of their friends? (I do not want a profession of faith, give me facts like I did).

BTW, I am pretty proud of my hallmark of writing.

Pierre.

infact if you want you can buy the full set from her:D

John,

Your system probably makes more sense. Unfortunately, the die is cast at this point. I saw that you said that you lost your list. I'm sending you mine, for what it's worth.

Generalasations have a tendency to get us all in trouble, that being said the idea of not posting names of dealers that border on unscrupulous is total non-sense and without merit. We are of like minds at the most common denominator in this forum, our hobby. I have railed mildly since the beginning about Marjorie and her husbands Back Door operation. It is so "In Your Face" to the rules that all K&C dealers have to abide by, that I can only think that They must have some "Naked Pictures" that keep K&C from pulling there dealership. It wasn't that long ago when a dealer lost his because he gave discount from the retail price instead of the free postage offer that we see so commonly now. Marjorie is so blatant these days as to offer the newest items postage free as well! The "Grief " incident was the one that caught most peoples attention, were her husband dealer was "out of stock" and she was selling them on e-bay for a premium, and some defended that?
Ray

Hopefully - Andy is seeing all this.............

I do agree that most of the dealers out there are great people and want to help the collector.

But, there are some who treat the Hobby Business shameful and always looking for the quick buck at the collectors expense.

So I believe both Brad and Pierre have their points.

Ray

I don't want to start trouble here, there has been enough of that at times.

My point about not posting names is out of respect for the Forum. If someone

mistreats me and I mention that I had a hard time, anyone that values my

opinion (if anyone) could contact me to get the details. I have several friends

on the Forum that will not do business with dealers/other members that I

have had good relationships with. So everyone is free to make up their own

mind. If you start naming people you will have a free for all with people lining

up on one side or the other.

You bring up Marjorie.....which I might add started a real war. I was on one

side almost everyone else on the other....but as I look back on it everyone

else was correct! I was simply stating that I had done business with her and

always found her pleasant and her products and shipping A-OK. Everyone else

was offended by her business practices....and they were right! So to avoid a

similar situation I suggested we don't go through this again.

I would rather know that a certain party is selling junk, overcharging for

shipping (becoming common) or mis-representing product so I can be aware

then start another war. There is to much knowledge to share and fun to have

here.

I don't like to work out on this old treadmill too often but I suppose it has to be said that
(a) yes, there is a great dealer network, many of whom have carried huge K&C inventories (Dickens, etc) when other companies were producing a much smaller range of items, ie the dealers acted not only as local advertising points for Andy's product but they also took a large percentage of his inventory costs too.

(b) However, it is an inescapable fact that quite a few dealers have an online presence that extends beyond just selling privately-acquired collections.

(c) Without prejudice to (b) it's still clear that many of the dealers who have auctions on eBay for retired items [eg Jack Carleton (le petit soldat), Larry Symons (March Through Times) Bill Sager, Matt Murphy (Hobby Bunker) Sierra/SouthBay etc etc] often offer at or close to retail and/or swap/trade retired items, and thus it's premature to run to call for any sort of prohibition on their participation in the secondary market.

(d) That does not prevent Andy seeking some sort of unwritten code of conduct on the Strictly Limiteds and/or the conditions under which they are supplied to dealers.

At one level I am one of those who hand-wring regularly about the excesses of the secondary market. On the other hand I still feel that at least there's a certain degree of transparency in the fact that someone can bid for an item, that they can earn their dollars however they do and that it doesn't require membership of a secret society to acquire items on the secondary market. (I use the term "secret society" because at times here amongst European collectors it almost feels like we are going to develop initiation rites and hand-shakes. A guy cna't just buy from me, he has to be introduced and/or I have to be made known to him). At least eBay offers some opportunity of access. That's not to say that it's an endorsement of the whole circus though - at the end of the day the items being sold there did not come out of thin air.

My jaded $ 00.02 on it all.

I agree Ray. And in fact most other Forums I am on has thread dedicated to eBay sellers.

The eBay thread(s) serve a number of purposes, such as:

1) Identifies suspect eBay sellers.
2) Identifies good eBay sellers.
3) Compares eBay prices on particular items to the RRP
4) Identifies cheap and or overly expensive lisitings
5) Identifies incorrect listings as to descriptions etc.

Considering the high variation in the pricing of retired King & Country pieces on eBay I feel a dedicated eBay thread on Treesfrog would provide members with an excellent opportunity for members to compare listings and sellers.

As a example here's a link to an eBay thread on another forum: http://www.diecast-aviation.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=2531

A couple thoughts from a dealer (and forum owner;) )

While I can understand people's desire to know about 'suspect' dealers, we're a bit leery to have those names posted directly on the forum, and this is why. At times a simple and honest misunderstanding might lead a customer to post in frustration and mention a dealer as less than reputable. Things might be said in frustration - accusations may be made. Once that post has been made, it's really hard to retract - even if everything is straightened out by the dealer. The post could be deleted, but the damage would have been done.

Also, since this forum is hosted and owned by Treefrog Treasures, it might sound too much like sour grapes (i.e. badmouth the other dealers so people buy from us instead). We have a high regard for our fellow dealers and want to maintain our 'squeaky clean' image.

This isn't to say dealers are perfect (none of us are). I know that from time to time people have had frustrations with dealers - this will happen. When it does happen, using the Private Message system to 'get the word out' may be more effective than putting it out there for everyone to see.

It isn't our desire to squelch conversation.

Just my thoughts ...

i agree at 100%

Peter, I understand your views on threads about other dealers as those discussion have got out of control in the past.

But what do you think of a thread dedicated to eBay sellers. Those threads work well on other forums where the main discussion revolves around the item price and or description.

Can we start an eBay thread?

Hi Oz, We've already got an entire eBay category and about a year ago we saw how ugly "naming names" could quickly get in the What is Wrong With This Picture ? thread there.
I have no problem with people pointing out eBay sellers they have had positive transactions with but I have the same concerns voiced by Njja and Pete about posting negatives about eBay sellers.

As the owner of the board I have to look at this from both a personal and business perspective as well. Since the inception of this board I have had a few occasions when I have had to untangle problems with people who have felt maligned by posts made by members and have complained to me. Then the issue becomes "what I allowed someone to say" about them and the focus ends up being on me personally and they feel it's a Treefrog Treasures endorsed attack on their character.

I can't vouch for transactions people have had that I have had no involvement in. I very rarely buy toy soldiers on eBay and couldn't tell you a thing about most sellers there so I'm not ready to face possible legal issues that could result in having specific sellers named as undesirable or "crooked". I know of the owner of a local forum here in Minnesota that was sued in a similar instance. They personally didn't write or endorse the post that questioned someone's character but they owned the forum and that was enough for the lawsuit.

Do I think it's good to warn other collectors to avoid certain dealers that people have had bad experiences with? Absolutely. But it needs to be done with the private messaging system. I appreciate your cooperation on this.

Now, I'm off to go delete some spam posts before you all have to be bothered with them. Thanks for being part of the forum and happy collecting to you all.

Regards,

As the moderator and unofficial attorney for this board, I'm a bit leery of naming names. This could expose Shannon and Pete to possible liability for libel and defamation. I feel the present ebay thread is adequate.
