Rather poor judgment (3 Viewers)

OT,

I would consider "quite some time" to be a lot earlier than the 1990s. The Globe and Anchor or the Bull Dog are more traditional. How about a bulls eye? I know that units need these icons and traditions for morale but I wonder "where the grown-ups" were.

For all the rights and wrongs in this, it kind of pales into insignificance compared to the horrific events of today.

We should have known.

"Ha ha! You fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders - The most famous of which is "never get involved in a land war in Asia"....."

Vizzini, in the Princess Bride.

He might just have well added 'March on Moscow' or 'Nuclear Standoff in Asia' to the list of classic blunders!

A surprisingly quirky and entertaining movie - I assume you saw it inadvertently when a daughter brought home a copy?{sm4}

Our intentions are noble but no matter how much we do and sacrifice for them we will still be the "occupiers" in their minds. A clash of cultures!
Today's events coupled with the mistaken burning of Korans spells big trouble for NATO. It just seems like a no win situation. War is never antiseptic.

He didn't say anything about "official," nor did he even elude to it being so.

Yes, thank you BLReed, the use of the symbol is in now way "official" or sanctioned by the Marine Corps. I should have made that clear in my first post.

Jack I just read a reference to PB on another forum discussing this same topic. I saw PB when it came out originally and recently shared it with my 16 year old who is quirky and entertaining as well. :wink2:

Not to make light of the news but I've been around since the 1950s and I thought "we" had figured this all out long ago. We're supposed to all about "learning from the past."

the corps has already dissed any mention of it,,your interpretation of things is yours,,how many times does he need to mention ss compared to the photos of the brains posing with it for you.the issue was the privates posing with a black flag and the ss runes,,get off trying to spin it or tell it to the rankers upset about it.

The news from this terrible event just gets worse, I won't repeat it in case its not yet confirmed, but if what I'm seeing on the news turns out to be true then this a bad day and could have far reaching consequences.

Yeah Rob, I'm one die hard Pro US type dude but this is just a very very sad day for an institution I love with all my heart- the US Army. I just cannot put into words how crushing this is to read about this. Something is just severely wrong over there- it seems like discipline is just dropping off- my former 506 bunkmate is over there now as a Plt Sgt- of course this makes me think of him and his safety.

This type of circumstance is where I really think the Romans got it right- especially in the provinces they garrisoned- if a legionaire dealt too harshly or wrongly with the locals, they'd hand him over to the locals for their justice. Seems to be the right thing to do here.

Well maybe if "we" were planning to stay for a thousand years and colonize the place and maybe award deserving "locals" with official citizenship.

I'm sure hoping this doesn't get to the helicopters on the embassy roof stage.

Interesting..my view of the thread shows 12 pages, but won't let me navigate past page 8. I was able to see the later pages earlier today.

Let me say again, gentlemen, that I congratulate everyone for keeping the discussion civil and on topic. I have always thought that the discussion could heat up and get the thread locked. There has been some good discussion, and it's nice to see my old buddy Scott (oldtrousers) checking in instead of just lurking ;) Yo, Snake, I'll be calling to follow up!

Prost!

Mate, again if reports are correct, the guy should not have been out there in the first place, if this is true I really hope the guy doesn't face the death penalty, if he had a brain injury in Iraq he shouldn't have been back in action again, not his fault.
