Ridley Scott's Gettysburg (1 Viewer)

Thought it was just awful. No lead in, no set up, no real over all view. The uniforms and actors looked like some sort of nightmare version of "Gangs of New York". Just awful. -- Al

There's a point. It started and ended abruptly. At least the central location of Gettysburg to the road system and the "fish hook" plus the 3 efforts to break the fish hook were covered with animated maps.

I figured the production was in trouble when the entire opening of the battle was cut out. No Buford? Battle started with the Iron Brigade, and no Reynolds. Almost turned it off right there. Should have. -- Al

I thought that the Geico Caveman commercial summed it all up just prefectly. He was the perfectionist and noticed all the glaring problems (extinct like us), and the guys who had the cell phones and ordered the pizza were the Hollywood producers..They dressed the part but cared less about the facts. Anything on the Civil War and waves a Confederate flag on TV is ok by me..Just keep it out there and show it as history..one day people may just get it..

THought the Geico commercial the highlight of the show. I went to bed after first hour and a half with the recorder on. Will hit the delete button tonight without watching the rest of the show. Problem with only a handful of reenactors is the lack of tactics and formations being shown (or not shown). Felt like I was watching an ACW version of the '60s show Combat. Chris

I think the best part was when they compared the different examples of the "Rebel Yell", I always like close ups of 19th century dental work or lack of.

Well guys, I was looking forward to this coming over here, but I now have a sinking feeling about it!:(

Can't imagine Gettysburg without Bufords boys or the 20th Maine!

Hold on Chris, that's an insult to the memory of Vic Morrow, Rick Jason, and Dick Peabody and all the other "Combat" cast and staff.{sm3} "Combat" was a much better show.:wink2:^&grin -- Al

This director and producer never got it. Goes to show that money and notoriety do no guarantee wonderful things..Remember the old Classic Images 125 Anniversary ACW videos. Any of the episodes from that series was more entertaining and informative. Antietam by Historical Films Group ( DVD )is an absolute must have, for any ACW buff. Just about all of the reenactor videos out there, were well done without the budget and professional services afforded to the History channel. Michael

Those were done with some enthusiam by reenactors for "free" plus meals and a T-shirt. Usually there was a promise of profits going to battlefield preservation. Actually A&E did the first round of videos back in the 1980s. I'm probably some where in the big scenes. Some Reenactors became jaded in the late 90s..early 00s about doing these videos for free. With reenactors you do get the TBGs (Tubby Bearded Guys) representing 120 lb. 20 year olds.

Several people on another forum where this horror show is being discussed have commented that it was filmed in.......now get this one.........South Africa.

Which explains the scrubs, tall grass, barren hills, etc, etc; that looked about as much like Gettysburg as Central Park.

Loved the Picketts Charge scenes, specifically the 30 guys marching in circles as cannon balls bounced into their ranks, look more like square dancing than marching..................

I was sick and puny all weekend. Started feeling better Monday night. Watched this and felt sick and puny again. Dreadful program.Pretty bad when the Geico caveman is the best part of the program. Had a few moments , but overall, thumbs down, far far down. There is a dvd set called CIVIL WAR BATTLEFIELDS with Classic images 125th reenactment footage. 4 hours long. Possibly the best ACW video available.

"Sick and puny"..............you are funny Scott...........the Geico commercial was commical, specifically the clambrain with the yellow crocs on; crocs, just not a good look for a man, right up there with a combover, a fannypack, gold chains, a beeper, a wife beater tanktop, on and on it goes.....................

Apparantly the same channel that aired this will have various civil war related segments on all week calling this "Civil War Week"

Well, it would seem that Ridley Scott has modern warfare (Blackhawk Down) and outer space warfare (Alien & Bladerunner) nailed but that the ACW has somehow eluded his talents. No helicopters or monsters to deal with. I don't know how a director who did these films and others like Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven could have missed so badly. -- Al

That is good Fub. Now I don't feel bad about missing the show. This is our third day with no power and maybe three more days before power comes on. Extensive storm damage and damage from some tornados. Three inches of rain first then the winds and storms. Looks like a battlefield here with 30,000 in the area without power. I better move to Oregon^&grin John

You are a life saver..I have the VHS set of these, but could never find them in a dvd format( I could use some help..Ebay has a number of DVD'S with this title but different lengths, covers, and # of dvd offered in set..Could you give me a hint )...If folks like these, they ought look at the Historical Films Group offerings. Antietam is excellent with James Earl Jones doing the narration..Michael
