Guys, the T is for Technician.

Wiki: "Technician Fifth Grade (abbreviated as T/5 or TEC 5) was a United States Army technician rank during World War II. Those who held this rank were addressed as Corporal. The wearers of the rank were often called "Tech Corporal". The pay grade number corresponded with the technician's grade. T/5 is under the pay grade 5 along with Corporal. Technicians were easily distinguished by the "T" imprinted on the standard chevron design for that pay grade.

The Technician ranks were removed from the U.S. Army rank system in 1948, although the concept was brought back with the Specialist ranks in 1955."

So a technician was different than a corporal but you were called that because you had some sort of technical ability or qualification?

The T was added when someone was a specialist in a field such as a Medic, Mechanic, Radio operator etc. For example Wade the Radio Opeartor in the unit had a T under Sgt (Three) stripes.

Edit: Here's some US Govt info about it: http://www.tioh.hqda.pentagon.mil/UniformedServices/Insignia_Rank/enlisted_history.aspx

^&cool Tom, here's a comparison link of UK to USA ranks, a link to the ADF is at the bottom under Oceania, pretty similar to UK: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_United_Kingdom_and_United_States_military_ranks#US_.22Enlisted.22_and_UK_.22Other.22_ranks_compared

Oz-

Thanks so much for the info, as usual, I came to the right place with my questions!

Best,
Jason

Your welcome Jason, I have seen the series quite a few times. Btw it still amazes me how many people get Steam Boat Willie confused with the Waffen SS guy that killed Mellish with the knife.

I was pretty amazed at how many people are mistaken about that one. It got to the point where I had to research it on my own. I was pretty sick a while back with lots of time on my hands. I watched the movie on my TV and laptop at the same time and froze the scence when the SS trooper exits the house after killing Mellish on the TV and I froze the science near the end when Steam Boat Willie is back fighting with the Germans on my laptop. The SS trooper clearly has SS runes on his collar and Steam Boat Willie has the Wehrmacht markings on his collar.

Thanks again for the input on my other query, my wife thinks I am nuts because I watched it again today just to see the 'T's' on the uniforms!

You should reassure your wife that's perfectly normal behavior for TS collectors ^&grin

Btw they would have been easier to tell apart if they didn't both have their heads shaved to look more like Neo Nazi Skinheads rather than have a true WWII hair style :wink2:

Just going off memory, but I think a couple of the non-coms in "Band of Brothers" were also Techs. Don't remember which ones though. -- Al

Don't know if this helps - but offer it anyway. From a book of mine by Andrew Mollo (1981) The Armed Forces of World War II - Uniform Insignia and Organisation. This illustration shows Us Army/Air Force and Navy Insignias. Hope it helps with understanding. jb

Thanks for that,,,,the US Army has various grade's of Sgt....the Aust Army is simple...Sgt or Staff Sgt,,,the Staff Sgt is usually a Quartermaster Sgt...so you usually have one Sgt for all occasions.....all Sgts have to qual at Weapon instruction..Drill..Miliitary law and then corp qual...ie..sig...engineers...etc.........From reading the fine print in the info kindly supplied by Oz Digger an Aust Sgt can qual F5 to F7...depending on the degree of responsibility..... tar for the chart...TomB

I told the wife about normal TS behavior and she told me that there is nothing normal about me or my toy soldiers. She reiterated that watching Saving Private Ryan for the 200th time so that I can see emblems is also not normal. Funny thing is that she sat and watched it with me, I think that is unconditional love!

And you are right, why do all the Germans have shaved heads?

Best,
Jason

^&grin She isn't alone, most of my friends think TS collecting isn't normal. They were relieved when I gave it up for a while, now I'm at it again they no doubt have an intervention planned for me {eek3} ^&grin

Not sure why the Germans have shaved/buzz cut heads, it could be to make them look more evil, or maybe just a simple device to allow the average movie viewer to pick the German troops from the GIs when they're not wearing helmets.

Yeah Matt, I've simply learned not to mention I collect TS to anyone other other than family or other collectors.....I think it's that weird, surprised look that I've sometimes recieved by the odd person thats put me off.......you know the type of look a doc would give ya just before they strap on the straight jacket...{eek3}^&grin:wink2:
