...First photo, SPECIAL DOUBLE set 1236 Imperial German Garde du Korps Mounted Band in red tunics...

That's an interesting set, Mike. I knew the Gardes du Corps had a red Waffenrock for gala occasions. That goes all the way back to Frederick the Great's army-cuirassier officers had a white coat, of similar cut to the dragoon and infantry Rock, for gala occasions. Royal aides-de-camp from the cavalry also wore them as their duty uniforms. But I never knew the Gardes wore them for mounted parades. It's a colorful set!

Prost!

Notice that these are musicians as indicated by the "birdnests" on their shoulders. It's my understanding that musicians in many armies often wore coats . . . or waffenrocks in this case . . . that were of different color than fighting units.

Yes, you're talking about reversed colors. But in the German armies, that tradition had petered out by the early 19th century. The Prussians stopped using reverse colors by the reign of Frederick William at least. Instead, their musicians were identified by the lace, the swallow's nests, as you note, and by bands of lace, originally on the coat and sleeves, but eventually retained just on the sleeves. The dragoons and cuirassiers also retained hanging "false sleeves" on the back of the coat, a remnant from herald's coats in earlier times.

No, the Gardes du Corps' red Waffenrock was worn by all, on occasions when the tunic was called for, instead of the cuirassier's white Koller. I just didn't know that it was ever worn while mounted. I'd be curious to see references.

Prost!

I also always look forward to seeing the new sets or even the existing ones when they are in the workshop after being painted, but before they have been tied into their boxes.

These are a special order of the 1st R.E.P. 1960 Algerian War French paras in the first stage of painting. It includes one double set with 18 figures and two sets with nine figures each. They are scheduled to shipped from Montevideo, along with the balance of Part 5 of the 2019 order, on October 25th.
