Sergeant Major Quincannon... (1 Viewer)

Hi Guys,

Re… Victor MacLaglen… Although he usually played “Irish” in the movies and was originally of Scottish descent he was really… English!

Born in Kent sometime in the 1890’s. He served in the British Army during the First World War eventually rising to the tank of Major in the Military Police. Sometime around 1918/1919 he was actually Provost Major of Bagdad!!! How’s that for a job. He did box in the army and had a few professional fights. How he ended up in Hollywood in the 1920’s must be quite a story… but I don’t know it.

He was a star in silent movies before joining John Ford’s “Stock Company” and becoming more of a character actor and playing supporting roles in later life.

Maybe not the greatest actor around but a lot of fun to watch and enjoy.

Best wishes and happy collecting!

Thanks for the details on VM, Andy. He must of been a fascinating individual to have known. I really enjoy his movies from his fighting Thuggees in "Gunga Din" to dancing with Shirley Temple, in kilts. A great character. -- Al

I've never really cared for Westerns but I think that's the kind of character he played.

Regarding the specific figure, I do remember seeing the Wayne figure on ebay once or twice so I wouldn't give up hope but, yes, I think that's a lot to pay just to get this figure. In your case, because you live in the UK, you'd have to pay customs duties, etc. if you bought from Kings X so it could get a little expensive.

Brad's correct-they both pop up on ebay now and again-I picked up the attached from UK Ebay last year for a couple of pounds for both figures. However, although the "Quincannon" character looks identical to John's photo the Wayne figure is wearing a topcoat as per "She Wore A Yellow Ribbon". So maybe there are two versions of "Captain Brittles"

The figures are wonderful but they are different from those sold by KingsX ..or they are different version made by K&C?Sorry my pictures are too big to post, but the Sergeant has a neck cloth red "a pois"..and John Wayne hasn't the topcoat, these don't seems K&C to me ..

Reb,
I think the figure with the topcoat is the Henry Fonda character from Ft. Apache but I won't swear to it.

I'm not sure that's right as Fonda wore a kepi either with or without a linen havelock protecting the back of his neck throughout the film and not the beat up campaign hat as the figure is wearing. They may not be K&C figures as they have no markings on the bases-in fact one came without a base-but they look very similar to the ones John posted.

Yes he did wear the kepi.Your probably right but I thought in one scene he did wear the hat.Love the movie but haven't watched it in a long time as I must have watched 50 times when I was a kid.So much for counting on the old memory.Let's check the last show report thread.

Can't you use photobucket?

I would say those are not King & Country. Here are the figures from KingsX

The figure with the topcoat is definitely based on the Wayne figure from 'Yellow Ribbon' and UKReb is correct that Fonda only wore the kepi in "Fort Apache". I have recently rewatched both these films:D. -- lancer
