The Canadians went to war in 1939 and were in combat in the North Atlantic (merchant marine and convoy escorts to England) and sent troops to England in 1939 to defend against a possible German invasion. Canadian pilots were also in combat in the Battle of Britain. Aside from Dieppe, the Canadian army didn't get into combat until Sicily. Canada had 3 infantry divisions and 2 armoured divisions split between Italy and northwest Europe after D-Day. At D-Day Canada contributed one of the 5 divisions with 2 British and 2 US Divisions. The Canadian Division was in the centre beach flanked by the 2 British divisions with the US Divisions at the 2 beaches to the west.
