Hello everyone,

I have been painting toy soldiers for a couple of years now, before that I had mainly painted historicals in 15-28mm. I have moved on from that scale, and am enjoying painting up toy soldiers quite a bit. I thought I would share some of my work with the community here.

I use Vallejo Model and Game color, as well as P3 Paints, with a dash of other various acrylics. My colors are a little bright on some projects, but I have been working to get a more realistic color palette down.

TSSD Flag Bearers, acrylic and weathering powder.

As you can see, I prefer matte and working in acrylics, but gloss is calling to me and I might take a crack at some gloss painting this fall. I am available for painting contracts as well, if you have anything you would like painted. Thanks for looking, and I look forward to being a regular poster here.

Hi Adam,

Welcome to the forum, there's some really great painting here and you should give gloss a go - it's a different approach but you get great results.

:smile2:

Jeff

Thank you for the compliments.

I have been on Coolminiornot in the past, I just don't care for the format that they use. It is a great site though. :)

I think I will give a gloss soldier a go this weekend, I will have the time to try and get it right. I will be sure to post up pics. Thank you.

Very nice. Look forward to seeing more. Always good to see the work of the artists we have on this forum. -- Al

Hi, Adam, and welcome to the forum!

Well done! You have a distinctive style, I really like how your figures have come out.

Ken's (All the King's Men) figures are really great, aren't they? And he covers some areas not well represented in other makers' lines.

I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work. Please do show us your wargaming scale figures, too. I'll follow Al in saying, it's nice to welcome another painter to our ranks.

Prost!
Brad

Brad,

Thank you very much for the warm welcome!

I appreciate the positive feedback. I find my style is in flux, I grew up playing war-games, many of them fantasy. I find that I am still trying to shake free the fetters of those super bright and hyper-realistic color schemes of the armies.

I am finding my place, and I am always looking to learn. I have never tried the gloss technique, so for me I am taking small steps while I immerse myself into this part of the model painting hobby.

Ken is a great guy. I have done painting for him in the past, and continue to do so. I am working on a unit right now for him, and I really appreciate all the help he has given me in the toy soldier area. Plus it is a fantastic game system, and great looking soldiers!

Here is an work in progress shot of the recent guys I have on the table. I also will have some photos of Ron Barzso's Robin Hood figures later tonight.

I will post up a thread with my 15 and 28mm stuff later on this evening.

Thank you for the kind welcome. I will be happy to share as long as I am painting.

Here are some Robing Hood and Merry Men figures from Barzso Playsets. I kept them painted in a simple spread of colors, but I am very happy with the outcome.

Later on this week I will be finished with an Airfix French Grenadier 1/12 scale and perhaps a couple of AIP Zouaves. Depends on how fast I can paint. =)

More great work, Adam! I wouldn't have thought that anyone could paint up those plastic figures so nicely, because their detail is a little softer than most cast metal pieces. Very well done!

As to painting glossy figures, I think you'd be able just as easily to paint in your usual style, and then seal the figures in a gloss varnish. I think you'd have a look comparable to what John Firth (beatingretreat) achieves. But do try your hand and let us see!

Prost!
Brad

Thank you! The Robin Hood lads were a little fiddly, as you have to paint on some of the detail that is usually there in the sculpt. All in all I wish I had more of them to be able to paint.

I picked up some glosscote yesterday at our local shop,so I will do a test figure today, and hopefully post up the results in this thread this evening.

Thanks again everyone.

Welcome Adam,

Just enjoying looking at your work! Nicely done. There are a few painters here.

I'm pretty new here and a convert to gloss and agree your painting style would look great in a gloss finish.

Do you use a wash for a faces?

Regards,

Scott

Scott,

Thanks and it's nice to meet you! I do use a wash for the entire model. I prime them with spray acrylic primer, then base coat each part of the soldier in the proper color. Then when that is dry, the entire model gets a wash. I make my own washes from artist's ink and matte medium with flow aid. Then after that is dry I highlight until finished.

The step into gloss makes me a bit nervous, but I am excited to try a new type of painting.

Cheers

Adam

I wouldn't be too daunted Adam, particularly if you are just applying a gloss finish. I find the gloss really lifts and brings some paint jobs to life!

I'd be interested in hearing more about the washes you make at some stage if you have time. I drifted out of the hobby in the mid eighties when acrylics were only just starting to come into the hobby and by the time I started painting again a few years ago I had missed a few things like washes!
