Good luck to whomever gets in the way of the Germans, that second goal was a thing of beauty.

And in sports, winning with a bit of humility is nice, it's best not to gloat as that can come back to haunt you.............

One good match today, one middling game and one bad game. I don't know if Germany was that good or Australia was that bad. The refing in the Germany match was not the greatest.

I have just seen Germany's game and let me say that it was a joy to see Germany play. The passing is precise, well timed and fast, outrageously fast and purposeful, possession is never given away. The pace of the game is ultra fast but not because German players run with the ball to try one on one with the defenders...it's the ball that goes fast from foot to foot and they are in the right places to get it. Kick and rush is unheard of and the full backs are patient, confident and comfortable on the ball even when under pressure, they don't give it away by just kicking it forward... The player's skills are terrific, all of them and great attacking football, with excellent fast combinations is just naturally flowing. Only downside, they missed some 4 clearcut chances, which would have brought the score to... 8 nil! So they had to settle for 4 nil... Beautiful, entertaining and as usually from the Germans, tremendously effective. Well played mannschaft!
Australia tried hard, had a couple of well played chances, but this German team was clearly too big of a hurdle for them. If they keep playing like this they'll be a tremendous hurdle for anyone:eek::eek::eek:.
I've heard that Argentina played a nice game against Nigeria, and indeed I later saw some images of Messi toying around with their defenders, Nigeria's keeper had a tremendous game and kept more goals at bay. So watch out. Other teams I would like to see when I have the chance are the Netherlands and of course Spain. Oh, and my team Portugal, of course, but I really am not expecting great things from them, hope they at least manage to get into the second phase:rolleyes:.
Back to Green, Cappello mentioned he pulled a good save in the second half but did you see it? He moved quickly to block the ball but instead of blocking it he let it go through his hands and on to the post:eek:. He really looked bad on the night, although I don't know him (in fact no English keepers defend the main English club's goals, but that's a story for another opportunity).

First, let me get this out of the way...

USA! USA! USA!

Ok, got that out of my system. Fantastic for the red, white, and blue to get a result against a clearly superior UK team.

The other thing I want to comment on is the Gerard/Lampard thing. These are two of the finest midfielders in the world, but you're absolutely right, they're like oil and water playing together. They need to play Gerard as an attacking midfielder and drop Lampard back. Gerard is only brilliant when given the free reign to attack, playing him side by side with Lampard just won't work. It should on paper, but it doesn't in reality.

I feel bad for Green as that was the worst goal in the history of the World Cup....but I'll gladly take it. ;)

I am sure that if you send them (Lampard/Gerrard) your fantastic upcoming mounted Wellington figure they will be inspired and playing 200% in no time:D.

Thanks Rob (and you too Jeff)........I actually felt bad that we tied England yesterday in the sense that soccer means so much more for the English than the Americans;as Rob said, the country basically was shut down during the match, while how many Americans really cared?

To me it would be like if somehow there was a worldwide football tournament (not THE football, but our US version) and a US team made up of all the NFL superstars tied England, people in the US would be stunned.

It really is a wonderful sport, the German game today was a thing of beauty, like I said that second goal was incredible.

I love how time runs continually for each half and there are not 9,000 commercials like in all of the US sports, a 60 minute game takes three hours to play in this country.

I also love the sense of national pride you see in the fans like when the first African nation won a match, it was a terrific thing to see, you just don't get that in any US sports, it's LA vs Boston, NY vs Chicago, etc, etc, not country vs country.

I am happy to be able to watch this in real time as well.........

Speak for yourself my friend. I stayed up until 2:30 AM when it started here and had to watch the game out at a pub with western satellite. So it may not mean much to you, but it means every bit as much to me as an English fan feels about England. We American fans probably do have lower expectations so we're not as crushed when the USA will get knocked out, however, we still bite our nails during the games. ;)

Hear, hear, I couldn't agree more. When we made the quarters in 2002, that was a great source of pride, not so much for the USA, but that the football program was establishing itself. In 2006, the US collapsed after an early goal and never recovered. Here, they didn't wilt and Altidore ate Carragher's lunch yesterday. Those were great accomplishments yesterday. Maybe it doesn't maean much to you (and that's a pity) but it does to American fans everywhere. Things are just getting better and better.

Paulo ,
Not only do you have great taste in collecting but it appears you now the sport as well ;) . I have been hard on Müller all year, he has missed more open goals for Bayern then I care to remember  but all is forgiven for the moment . He is wearing 13 and in Germany they are saying he may be the next Gerd Müller IMO he has not yet peaked... he is only 20 and no Bomber yet . A very fine Game and by far the best performance so far , but we have a long way to go. Plenty of Great games to go........... good luck to all . All the best Gebhard

When did I say it doesn't mean that much to me?.....

Reread what I wrote Brad.

I wrote I felt bad for my many friends in the Uk.

My point was it meant more to England that they tied instead of won, European countries and South American countries put more ephasis on soccer than most Americans do, they are very passionate and I think that is pretty cool, the same passion does not exist in this country.

I enjoy the entire World Cup experience myself, will be watching the Italians tomorrow.

Watched the Germans today, they are a machine.

Will be watching the Americans as well.

For as long as it lasts for them.

LOL!! I have my moments. ;)

I'm a huge fan of the game, played at university, and still kick around in an old man's league out here even now where we play every Sunday and I limp every Monday. I'm a man of many interests beyond Sake and toy soldiers my friend. :D

Actually, though, this world cup is setting itself up very nicely. My hope is a USA finish in second place in the group and Germany finishing on top of it's group so we can have a rematch of the 2002 Quarter Final game where the USA was defeated 1-0 and i feel absolutely should have won that game (they dominated Germany). The sad part is had they won, they would have had a great shot to make the finals vs Korea in the semis. Yes, given Germany's dismembering of the Aussies last night, it's probably suicide to wish for such a matchup, but I can't help it. I still have a bad taste in my mouth over that defeat. Besides, one of my good friends here who I watch the games with is German and it will be good fun to go head to head. As for the Germans, I need to see them play more. I can't tell if they were that good or if Australia was that bad. They broke them down with ease and the Aussie back line just couldn't keep pace. It was by far the performance of the tournament so far, which to me has seen mostly uninspired play. It will get better though once everyone shakes off the first game jitters I think.

In the end, though, I think it's Spain's tournament to lose. They're just loaded and I have them winning it my bracket pool...we'll see though.

Hi Guys,

I think the game the other day was fantastic for the US team and bet we will make some capital on this. The Goalie Green on the other hand may never hear the end of this.

The whole discussion of Soccer not being as popular in the states is true or at least it was true. I have been a fan of the game for a long time especially since I learned it as a kid in New England (1970's) at a private school and was able to take that to the public High School and play on into college so its been in the background for a long time but there have been pockets of the states where it did very well. Now with the surge in the MLS of adding teams, especially Seattles Sounders and Portlands team coming soon I am seeing a lot more attention being paid to the game. On the way to a Sounders game right before the Cup break I had a very good discussion with some friends of a friend who made many of the points George and some others have made, mainly American Football rules here. But I think I may have caused them to rethink that stance a little, They dont have kids yet so they havent seen the newest development in the area, mainly a lot of private clubs springing up in the past 10 to 15 years that are helping to develop the next couple of generations of Soccer players. When I was a kid there was little league and basketball in the winter with the YMCA and Some peewee league Ice Hockey and Football but no soccer leagues. That has really changed and now I see kids playing all the time at the parks in my area and for that fact when I was on the East Coast near Boston for a visit in the past year I saw the same thing there on fields that a few years prior were mainly reserved for Cows. So give us a few more years of growth and I really believe that Soccer will become a very popular sport here. Not as popular as American Football but certainly right up there. I also think you will soon see scouts from major league teams showing up at these fields like they do in other parts of the world so they can get the kids id'ed and into the sort of training plans that it takes to make superior major league soccer players. I have the great pleasure of watch the Sounders sell out 35 to 36 thousand seat per home game so when I go to the field its an amazing atmosphere! During last years quarter finals they sold even more tickets but the number escapes me right now. So to the nay sayer's I say watch and wait you might be surprised.

So guys lets hear it for Team USA and I hope to see Dempsy score a real shot and Brandon Donovan do some damage as well!

:D:D:DIt is Landon Donovan not Brandon:D:D:D

It will be hard for the USA to win against Slovenia, because we are interested in a draw as well, but since i know my country they will go for the three points because they know that win against USA will put them in the next round and our chanches are bigger with the USA than with the England, but if the Green will be in the squad that will also be great for us:D:D:D

Who is the best!!!????

S L O V E N I J A!!!!!!!!

Right ,got my chores out of the way and am settling down to watch Holland v Denmark, could be the best game so far do we think chaps?.

Heres a question for you World Cup experts, whats the worst behaviour you've ever seen at the competition?.For me it was Argentina, forget who they were playing now but the players were running up and deliberately barging into the Referee, never seen anyhting like it and totally disgraceful.I see Maradonna has called for fair play (bit rich from him;))so maybe those days are gone.Whats the worst you've seen?.
