Captain Jean de Selys Longchamps , Belgian pilot serving in the RAF and based at Manston, attacked on board his Typhoon in Jan 1943 the Gestapo HQ in the heart of Brussels ( Avenue Louise, 453) The most hated building in the whole of Belgium, where daily resistance people were questioned and tortured.

Thought provoking, meaningful memorial and a heroic tribute. Gotta love Typhoons, too...Ollie_D.

What a story and what a hero, its men like this that crushed Nazi Germany's spirit and helped us win :salute::

Rob

Chaps,
have you noticed that his statue is placed in front of the building(Gestapo HQ) he partly destroyed during the war. Compare the two pictures and you will see that the building still looks the same as in 1943

The old picture dates from 1942 and shows the Gestapo HQ Avenue Louise,453, ( one of the main - and most expensive-shopping streets in Brussels) flying the swastika flag.( today replaced by a small Belgian flag on the balcony)

Guy,

Thanks for sharing such an interesting story with us. It was through hundreds of heroic stories like this, some well documented, others lost in oblivion, that the allied fighting men made the difference and were able to defeat the axis.

Guy,

Thank you so much. It's really a great and inspirational account. :)

I really think all this history is very interesting - as a matter of fact it really encourages you to buy the figures/planes for your Toy Soldier Collection - don't you think ??
