I haven't done any spontaneous purchases of toy soldiers in about 5 years. I now plan my purchases with more care and accumulate funds for the purchase in advance. It seems like the manufacturers have been coming around to releasing news about future ranges sooner with sneak pics rather than keeping it secret until the release could be launched like they have in the past. Have they been adapting to the new times, finally? Would you rather receive news sooner so you can plan your purchases or be surprised?

I prefer a nice surprise myself, although from a business sense I think it's important to 'wave the carrot infront of the donkey' to maintain the interest, especially if you want to remain competitive.

Cheers!

depends on what you collect to what surprises they have when new releases come. Pretty much if you are a WWII collector then each month you know your going to get new stuff so, accordingly to your budget and type of collector your already planning your purchases. Other ranges that are not so prevalent and frequent I suppose the manufacturer is helping the said collector plan his purchases. Its not hard when your chosen subject matter gets released twice a year at most.

Having said that I just go with it what comes, comes so, to speak. I don't plan, I want this and this I just buy what I fancy when I see it

I am no fan of sneak peaks I like to see releases on the expected dates monthly for K&C and then whenever for the other manufacturers

I am so sporadic in my buying. More WWI glossy than anything else but my most recent buy (this week) was a John Jenkins FIW set. I guess I impulse buy more than anything else. I am still new at this hobby so no space issues yet but I can certainly see where not planning my buys could lead to them!

I think it helps collectors out giving them the opportunity to pick and choose, maybe more for financial reasons than actually what we want.

Spontaneous purchases only happen to me at Toy Soldier Shows.

If I am fore warned, I am armed and dangerous. As soon as I am aware of a figure/vehicle/diorama, I am trolling my mind to supplement these with a DVD, book or other TS's etc. So for me I would rather know what's coming, but of course a surprise every now and again spices things up.{sm4}, Robin.

For me this a matter of money, space for displays and time. If I had a house, more disposable income I would definately make some on the moment purchases. As it is I limit things to special interest and plan etc.

I collect Trophy of Wales, enough said :wink2: ^&grin

Cheers

Well I would say that most of my purchases are planned as well because I am always looking for Durbar sets from Marlborough that I am missing. But I do a lot of flea markets here in Europe and have encountered a lot of interesting soldiers that would have to be called a spontaneous purchase. Like the amazing bunch of Prussians I bought two weeks ago.

Yep! - See it - Like it - Find a casting of it that /looks like it/ adapt it???? paint it - Got it!:D

Sometimes can take a while to find it - but usually can. jb:D

P.S Boot sales and flea-markets can sometimes delight too!

Each purchase is planned and carefully funded within my budget. I have a list of pieces that are prioritized, but a new piece, within the area I collect, can be added at the top of the list anytime if it really catches my eye or if I think availibilty might become an issue. No spontaneous purchases as the budget does not allow it. -- Al
