St George's Day (2 Viewers)

And what is very encouraging Mitch is that this forum is full of some of the nicest people you could wish to meet, from....South Africa

I dunno Rob, I sort of agree with you- that rabble from South Africa can be a bit cantankerous at times. {sm4}{sm4}{sm4}

sorry I am late to the fray but racism against English people REALLY???? I have never heard of such a thing. Don't mean to sound condescending, I just had absolutely no idea something like that existed???? ^&confuse

Nontheless, Happy St. George's Day to all those who so celebrate the day.

Is this enmity between the English and Scots that Trooper wrote about something that has gone on for hundreds of years? If so, makes us look like pikers regarding the perceived differences between Northeners and Southeners. That has only gone for 150 years.

Yeah its hard to imagine isn't it Chris.We all know the English have never put a foot wrong, oppressed anybody or even parked in a disabled car parking spot when only suffering a slight limp. We are beyond reproach :wink2:^&grin

Actually there is out there a website that is called something like 'Why the English are to blame for the ills of the World ' or something similar, they want England to pay Billions in damages for everything from Slavery to the Spice Girls. I've sent them £1.75, well the Spice Girls were rubbish.:wink2:

It has indeed Brad. During the last world cup an English Girl of about 8 or 9 made the mistake of wearing an England shirt out in the street in Scotland and was attacked for her pains. Thing is there is great ignorance amongst some people on both sides of the border and sadly always will be. The Hooligan element amongst Englands football fans have not helped over the years either, one hopes that this hatred of each other really is confined to the ignorant few. I've met many very nice Scottish,Welsh and Irish people over the years, I've also met out and out racists too, the same can be said of my English countrymen, there is good and bad in all countries.

Rob,

Just as it must be difficult for some to understand why people bicker in this country about the Civil War, so it must be to understand what you describe.

Enmities, unfortunately, do not go away peacefully.

There is also a gerenal divide between the North and South of England as well. Funny though that when you are away from the Motherland you tend to seek out anyone from the The United Kingdom. I have many Scottish, Irish, English and Welsh friends over here whom I probably wouldn't associate with if I was still living in England.

Yes whilst of course I understand that the ACW was one of if not the biggest event in US History, I am still surprised to see how feelings run deep still and tempers can still be short on the subject. But of course I guess you don't have to go too far back in History to find family members of forum members fully involved, perhaps it will be another hundred years or more before the healing is almost done.

Must say, of all the other Military History subjects (apart from WW1/2) I could immerse myself in the ACW really strikes me as one of them. The epic scale, the Horror, the families and communities torn apart makes it I would imagine absolutely addictive. Ken Burns has a lot to answer for!:smile2:

Cantankerous, and with the skill and ability to surgically remove body parts. I personally think our South African contingent are top class blokes. {sm4}
Let's see which one of us comes out better following a major op in SA. {sm2}

The only way you can drink North Amercian beer is ice cold. The chill in your mouth distratcs you from the fact that it tastes like weasel wizz. {sm4}

Exactly how did you acquire knowledge of the precise taste of weasel whizz? Trooper
