Michael, This is taking shape nicely! I am envious of your ship building prowess!

KV...You will appreciate this. I am going to build 2 upper works. One will be Sudan and the other will be a ACW Union tinclad. Both will be interchangeable, depending on my mood. I have several ACW sternwheelers, that will look perfect to copy...Michael

The next photos will show the lower cabin section...Grommet portholes and wood doors have not been added yet..The section adjoining the paddle will be fixed. The forward section will be interchangeable with the ACW sections, that will show armored casements and gunports...Even though contempory Sudan accounts all say that these ships were armored, I like the wooden effect and homemade gunboat from standard steamer look....Besides, I want to give the Mahdists a fair chance....I am working on the ACW add on, as we speak, but until I get some 6 -8 naval guns for fit, I may be hampered from moving too fast........Michael

Michael,

So cool. Can you show us the inside of the superstructure. I am glad you were able to post some shots of your progress. Did you make the bulkheads from the popsicle sticks?

There is no interior detail. Popsicle sticks were trimmed at ends and I used a piece of basswood to join the sections together, to represent a timber joint. I did glue the popsicle sticks to each other, but probably is not necessary...This section is free moving, as it will be interchanged with the ACW piece..More to follow....Michael

Wow, that looks great! She's taking shape nicely.

You show that you don't have to shell out thousands on eBay, if you want a gunboat for your troops.

Prost for the nice work done!
Brad

Michael,
Fantastic and waiting for more!. Query: How did you craft the bow so it rises and looks so crisp? Mike

At AC Moore, in the woodcraft aisle, I found a heart shape pasteboard box with a gently curved point. I would have preferred a wooden one, but the shaping did not look right. I made sure that the point end was the width of my hardwood board hull. I cut the point off and glued it in place at the front of my hull. I had already traced out the shape on my board and sawed that for fit. Some filler and sanding for smoothness and an angle cut to shape the rise in the bow piece...I also used extra thin balsa sheets and glued them inside the pasteboard as reinforcement, to firm everything up...........Michael

Michael,
As always, thanks for the help!! I saw your first one and love the grommet idea for portals. It's amazing what you find to use for material, and just as amazing when we see the result! Full speed ahead! Mike

The next stage is for us all to finish our projects, and hold a toy soldier gunboat regatta.

Prost!
Brad

Here are the components so far. I need to build a superstucture and the wheels. The boxes fot the wheels have been cut down.

The regatta idea is kind of cool:cool:

KV...See if this makes sense to you...More than likely, you were planning to do this anyway...Michael
