First Legion is very pleased to announce our latest figure range, the Seven Years War! Fought from 1756 through 1763, the war involved most of the major world powers and was fought not only in Europe, but throughout their various colonial holdings around the world. Though our intent with the range is to cover the European part of the conflict in detail, we have decided to start off with the Battle of Kunersdorf fought on August 12th 1759 between the Prussians and a combined Austro-Russian Army. Kunersdorf was by far Frederick's worst defeat and in fact was the biggest fiasco of Prussian Military arms until their dismemberment at the hands of Napoleon's Grande Armee in 1806 at the twin battles of Jena-Auerstadt. It may seem strange to cover the greatest defeat of Frederick the Great, certainly the finest military mind of the age, but we feel that the battle offers a variety of interesting troops, attacks and counterattacks, and cavalry charges by both sides. It was a battle that Frederick had won in the morning, but then lost in the afternoon as he continued to press the attack despite the protests of his generals through poor terrain, against strong allied positions, and in extremely hot weather. The Prussian attacks finally ground to a halt due to a combination of fierce resistance and the thirst and exhaustion of the Prussian troops and the allies counterattacked and the Prussian army came apart, virtually dissolving. Our initial launch for the range is the 7th Prussian Line Infantry Regiment Braunschweig-Bevern presented in march attack formation. We sincerely hope you enjoy them!

I'm not thrilled about choosing Kunersdorf to start this line.... I can think of many more battles i'd like to see done and needless to say I won't be using my figures to recreate it :wink2: but since these figures are sculpted by Russians and many of our Russian friends play such a HUGE part in making First Legion what it is ... They deserve this one ....
That being said these figures look INCREDIBLE {bravo}}{bravo}}{bravo}} I think this will be my new number two line :redface2: I have been waiting many many years for 7YW figures like these no more searching out Miniwelt figures for commissions {sm3} . I'm really looking forward to getting the first few and having a closer look as the pictures IMO never do your figures justice for some reason . Also looking forward to having a Mounted Old Fritz and maybe Seydlitz leading a cavalry charge^&grin^&grin now that would be something . Great stuff well worth the wait .. Congratulations , Thanks and Regards Gebhard

Very pretty figures, congratulations! I think this line will be as successful as your others.

For the painters among us, I can see mixing in some MiniWelt Prussians, too, both lines should be about the same size.

I'm not thrilled about choosing Kunersdorf to start this line...

I see your point, Gebhard, but on the other hand, it occurs to me that by selecting that subject, we could expect FL to come out also with a vignette figure of Fritz and the trooper of cuirassiers after the battle, after the Menzel print.

Prost!

Why is regiment officer off beat
Everybody is leading with right foot
he's leadind from the left foot????
That won't look good in front of the rank
There might be lots of regiment officer left
when the rest are sold out
This is not a complaint just a remark
because i can't understand it
Anybody has an explanation
No politics just facts
Happy collecting boys

Another solid release from First Legion and a good start for their SYW range. I think the mounted officer is my favorite, as he really looks like he wants to drive his men forward!

Hi ML ,
Of course I'm sure you know this is just a promo picture to showcase the current figures that are becoming available and has nothing to do with how Prussian troops of the time would be formed up going into Battle , neither the Captain , Lieutenant , N.C.O.'s , Drummers , Colour Bearers or Woodwind players ( which I hope we will get as well ) would be placed in anything resembling this formation its all wrong , Its just put together to present the figures . I would really like to see at least a full Platoon set up ..... That would look Incredible {bravo}} Just wonderful figures ...Maybe Matt would be able to tell us what FL are going to be representing when the release is complete .. Regards Gebhard

You know what really jumps out at me from this latest FL release? FL sculpts an absolutely beautiful horse. FL's horse sculpts have always been fantastic (e.g., the new charging Crusaders spring to mind). But just look at the horse from SYW013. The sculptor has really captured the dignified essence and the powerful presence of this steed. Wonderful work once again FL!

Gebhard,

Can you share with us the correct company arrangement of the officers, NCO, drummers and etc. I have been looking on the Internet for a diagram, but without success. Do you know of a website or other source that shows this information?

Thank you

I might be able to help. Duffy has diagrams of platoon and company order, when deployed in battle line. I can see if I can scan them and post them in this thread.

Prost!

That's a good observation, I didn't notice that at all. Well, at least the officers are clean-shaven, and the company and platoon officers aren't wearing boots.

Prost!

It has everything you could dream of and much more , I'm hoping Brad will also find a way to scan the Tactical Formation diagrams for you as I have no way to do it . Enjoy my friend it has hours and hours and hours of wonderful information http://www.kronoskaf.com/syw/index.php?title=Main_Page ... Best regards Gebhard

Hi KM,
Just to follow up , I dug out Chris Duffy's The Army of Fredrick the Great today and the Tactical Formation Diagrams are on pages 118 and 119 if you have the book if not , its a wonderful book and needs to be in your collection {bravo}} Hope this helps in some way .. Regards Gebhard

Thank you Gebhard,

I visited the website you suggested and you are right it will take a while to take in that much information. I do have Duffy's book, Army of Frederick the Great book. However, I didn't see any drawings on pages 118-119. . My edition shows a company formation on page 69 and a battalion view on pages 84 and 85. My edition was published by Hippocrene in 1974. Hopefully it is the same information.

Thank you again for your help.

Hi KM ,
Yes its on page 118-119 of his reworked addition of 1996 which highlights and I qoute Duffy " Just how ill-informed and uncharitable were some of my comments on Frederick's army " and which makes this addition my favorite :) .. and your quite welcome . .. I almost forgot to ask your plans for this line as your French Line dio is the best I have seen and want to know if I should buy early and often just encase you buy em all up..... best regards Gebhard

Good evening, gentlemen, that is precisely the set of diagrams I had in mind. Here are the diagrams as printed in Duffy, for the rest of the community to review.

This is a typical Prussian platoon, arrayed in three ranks and locked on for firing:

PrussianPlatoon.jpg

and this is a battalion of eight companies:

PrussianBattalionOrder.jpg

The company colors were grouped in the center of the line, to allow the wings to dress off the center.

When advancing, the Prussians would choose objects on the horizon or in the line of sight, to keep the line aligned. Mounted officers also rode ahead to serve as moving alignment points. The center of the battalion served as the regulating point, the point one which the battalion's wings would dress. The battalion commander would then select an alignment point of his own and advance to 10 paces in front of the battalion at the head of a color party of two ensigns and two NCOs. This party formed a right angle to regulate the battalion's alignment as it advanced.

Of course, in combat, this formation could become relatively ragged as it passed over rough ground, or as it passed around obstructions.

Still, this gives you an idea of setting up and displaying these figures.

Hope that helps, prost!
Brad

PS--I second Gebhard's comment about the Seven Years War Project at Kronoskaf, it is a very good resource. The members have access to sources of original information in Germany, and there's always new content being added. Some of it refutes details in current circulation. I recommend browsing through the articles.
