Here is a scene depicting Nicholas Megura (the "Flying Cowboy") from the 334th Fighter Squadron of the 4th Fighter Group flying out of Debden England. He is just returning from a successful mission and is describing to a new pilot just how it's done. As he goes through his recount of how he downed a particular German, Don Allen (famous nose art painter of the 4th FG) paints another victory cross on Megura's P-51B named the "Ill Wind?" which was also painted by Allen.

Duke

This is terrific!!

Where did you get the figure of "nose" artist Don Allen? I would love to get one since I spent over a year interviewing American WWII nose artists and crew members back in the 1980s.

What was your source for the plane? That is also very nice.

Really nice Duke...one of the best set ups and pictures you have posted to date...this one's a keeper!

I'm liking that USAAF series the more I see it, definitely on my list to pick up some sets. Nice diorama, thanks for sharing.

Thanks all for the comments guys.

Randy, the P-51B is an old Revell 1/32 kit that I just finished building/painting. I used Kits-World decals for the "Ill Wind?" markings. The figure painting the victory cross on the wing and the other figure in the background behind the crates/fuel drums comes from an old Corgi P-51D 1/32 set of John Elder's plane. I got the idea for this scene from a wartime photo of Don Allen actually painting a victory cross on the "Ill Wind?" and the figure from the Corgi set worked perfectly.

Was the figure painting the plane a stock figure or was it a conversion that you did?

Randy,

He's straight from the Corgi set of Lt. John L. Elder and ground crew (pilot and 2 ground crew included) P-51D 357th FS/355 FG, Steeple Morden 1945.

Randy,

That's the photo I was talking about. Megura's P-51B looks really weathered doesn't it? I guess I need to go back to my model and do some serious weathering:eek::)

Another great scene, Duke! Everything fits perfectly.

Thanks. I wanted a scene featuring K&C's Megura figure and I had an old 1/32 Revell plastic model kit of the P-51B in a box in the closet (had it for years) so I decided to build it for a backdrop. Just had to purchase the decals for Megura's P-51B. Already had the Corgi figures as well which let me depict Don Allen painting the plane.

Randy,

Meant to ask you, why were you interviewing artists and crew memebers? I bet they had some interesting stories.

Duke...

Really nice set up

To wwiibuff; Nice work on the diorama. It's always fun to see someone else's work. Thanks for sharing.
