The Pacific-Episode 3 (1 Viewer)

Thanks! I remember Kelly's Heroes with the Beehive hairdos on the female Yugoslavian "French" Extras.

I went to the Camp Pendleton premier of the first episode and Captain Dale Dye spoke before the feature started. He was also the Tech advisor for BOB and SPR. He stated that he committed the last two years of his life to making sure this was one was accurate in every aspect. Dale served in the 1st Marine Division so he was especially committed to getting it right. In fact, in addition to the boot camp he put on for the actors and extras portraying Marines, there was a Japanese boot camp put on by the Japanese equivalent of Dale Dye so the Japanese actors would learn Japanese tactics, Japanese weapons handling, and Japanese soldier characteristics and mannerisms. That’s remarkable attention to detail!

Rick:

I'm sure that was really special for you, I know I would have enjoyed meeting him, and getting a real Marine's perspective on all the projects and movies that he has been involved with for Hank's and Spielberg. I'm sure of what his answer would be comparing the Pacific series to all the rest--I did hear him say it during one of his many interviews.

I had the chance to meet R.L. Ermey and bullshit with him a few years back at the Louisville gun show. He is exactly like you think he is, has MANY opinions, and is not afraid to tell them to anyone....... I'm sure he and Dale would be amused at some people here trying to compare apples and oranges between the different series.............Semper Fi, Stryker

And Oddball's Hippy hair as well. I think Battle of the Bulge used mostly repainted Cold War era vehicles.

We have the CW/WBTS movies with guys wearing the paste-on sideburns that really weren't in general fashion except for General Burnside.

I'm digressing from the topic of The Pacific. I plan to see it when I can.

Stryker,
I met Ermey last November. Your're right, what you see is what you get with him. Great guy who hasn't let his popularity go to his head.

R Lee Ermey is cool! He seems to be OK with roles that are self parody including cartoon character voices. I was surprised when he recited a poem on one of his Mail Call History Channel programs.

The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner
by Randall Jarrell

From my mother's sleep I fell into the State,
And I hunched in its belly till my wet fur froze.
Six miles from earth, loosed from the dream of life,
I woke to black flak and the nightmare fighters.
When I died they washed me out of the turret with a hose.

This is not very good news about this series as in Australia we have not seen it yet.The Pacific war was very violent with not to many prisoners taken in the jungle. Not by the Australian forces anyway. Can't wait till it starts here.Simmo.

Simmo i just watched 3 episodes back to back and mate i enjoyed it,its bonza cobber real beaut, you and your cheilah should love it well worth the captain cook...............:D

Rick: you are absolutely correct, he is VERY much behind his cause, which is totally 100% anything to do with the USMC--and all others BEWARE!!!!!.....Stryker

I have just watched Episodes 1 and 2 of "The Pacific" on HBO last night.

The story line is so far at battalion level, so it is difficult to get the big picture of the entire operation.

That said, I like the emphasis on the senior NCOs re: Sergeants.

The role of officers is gingerly inserted in short, but not insignificant segments.

There is no shortage of action scenes with plenty of firefights.

It is too early to comment further after viewing just 2 episodes.

It was entertaining, so I look forward to Episode 3.

Tom Hanks is lucky most of the old Marines are in their 80's or they might be
inclined to inform him what it was really like.
One of my buddies Dad fought on Tarawa, he is gone now but he was a real
two fisted fellow we all admired in High School.
I can assure you he spent his time terrorizing the Japs......not the Australian
ladies.

My dad wasnt at Tarawa, but he was at Guadalcanal, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima. He thoroughly enjoyed the Australian and New Zealand ladies, he spoke well of the people and his time there..and trashing bars in Hawaii with the rest of his fellow Marines who were burned out from daily fighting with the Japanese. Just like episode three..sorry to dissappoint everybody expecting more..It was jungle night fighting at it's worst, just like he always said.

I TOO will side with Carlos. One of the most boring episodes of all time was the training one in BOB. Perhaps EASY COMPANY thought it was quite unusual to take off running after a meal? Was this what the real life men wanted the viewers to think or what? I realize we are talking about the army here, but in the Marine Corps, that is hardly a hardship or UNUSUAL.........Stryker

Good one Stryker - especially with that Doink from "Friends' in it..took away alot of it for me..and the comic-book Sarge with the cigar clenched between his lips the whole series..gimme a break...

You have to be kidding buddy! You North American Yankee talk is not easy to take either. Give me a break you fellers you are talking like alot of backward Southerns eating grits and chewing tobacco. That is pretty close without useing more colourful language my friends.Simmo.

Watch who you are calling a Yankee there, bubba..if you want hear some good ol' backwoods Southern talk, check out "SlingBlade" with Billy Bob Thornton..you may need subtitles..

They did not need a full episode for this. This is one I won,t be watching a second time.
Also I did not understand anything the Aussies were saying.
