The Punic Wars Roman Warship July 2019 Special Pre-Order Announcement (1 Viewer)

I use Exin blocks in my Roman fortifications and they look quite realistic. The Roman watchtower on the Danube river frontier, being resupplied by the Playmobile Roman galley is an example. I even built a 1/30 scale Roman Triumphal Arch with them through which Claudius on his Elephant could pass through!

That building looks good mate

I have done some research on Ancient Roman Galleys.
One of the Metropolitan Museum Ancient Rome and Greek curators is an acquaintance of mine and I
have also been in contact with two Italian historians who researched for me.
The Ancient historian Polybius recounts Roman galleys engaged in shore patrols and shallow water encounters
with pirates that did not have sails but relied on oars.
The noted ancient Roman and Greek historian Peter Connolly depicted Roman Galleys during the Punic wars as
using oar power. As has been noted by others Roman galleys with sails generally took them down during battles.
Italian historians noted depictions of "galleys without sails on bas reliefs, pottery and mosaics".
I have books on Ancient Rome (e.g. Warfare in the Ancient World) that show images of galleys with no sails.

I believe that both sails and just oars were used in naval encounters during the Punic Wars.
The JJD galley is a reasonable depiction of the real vessels. Of course there is license taken with
regard to size and features as commercial considerations are paramount in our hobby. I will be thrilled to have one in my collection.

I saw these ships in person in the TF room at Chicago and they are amazing together. Decided to buy them then and there.
I have a love for my Conte viking ship and I imagine these two will be the same if not better. And the price!!! Under 400 USD.
Again under 400.00 dollars. Not sure how that is even possible.

As far as accuracy and scale. This is the manufacture who made a replacement propeller for free to correct a mistake for some people. He shipped several of us a new plane when the wings warped and took a lost doing it by my math. He's earned my trust over and over.
The scale thing? I have never read or heard of any people who only used one size ships. Convert a trade ship to warship? Pretty common. River vessels, smaller in shore craft, all kinds of reasons for this vessel to be this size IMO. They have found remains of similar length and beam trading ships from this era, so we know the Romans built vessels of this size.

Now to try convince the Mrs that our current coffee table is too small for the room.

Great post.

Lego has some for 1/2 the price of the Playmobile...

Maybe so, but I'd be willing to bet their crack team of historical researchers who came up with that tire fire are right there with the good folks from Playmobile that Katana speaks so highly of.

"So what do you do for work there Harry?"...………."I'm in charge of historical research over at Playmobile on our $35.00 toy boats; you know, the ones that float."

I can't stop laughing!!!

I can't stop laughing!!!

Sometimes you get a 60 MPH fastball right down broadway and you can't help but make solid contact.

Or, the material writes itself...……………;)……………..

Some very nice "sneak peep" photo's posted recently of J.J. and Chis Tay taking a look at the Carthaginian and Roman Galleys on the "Toy Soldier Collector Asia" Facebook site. :salute::
