The 1st Battalion, 24th (2nd Warwickshire) Regiment of Foot comes to it's gallant end. The famous photo of THE 24TH AT ISANDLAWANA, 22 JANUARY 1879 by C. E Fripp depicts the event of the day in the background.....The Lt.

Rorke's Drift and it's defenses. I built the Hospital and The Storehouse using a map drawn by Lieutenant Chard for the placement of the doors and windows and the placement of the mealie bags, wagons, biscuit boxes and well built kaaral. The layout is quite similar to what is drawn on the map.
The Battle of Rorke's Drift is soon to begin....The Lt.

You know, the 24th Foot were a really unlucky regiment. The suffered a similar disaster at the battle of Chillianwalla during the Second Sikh War, loosing fully a fourth of the entire regiment in casualties in one horrible day (and that was claimed as a victory by Hugh Gough!).

I'm not familar with the event Louis but thanks for pasing it on. The events that follow shows that they did have some luck. Private Fred Hitch climbs the ladder to act as a lookout order by Colour Sergeant Bourne who watches while the men of B Company 2nd Battalion 24th Regiment of Foot haul and open ammo boxes. At 4:30 p.m. he urgently shouts a warning that the Zulus are approaching........The Lt.

Private Hitch watches from the roof top of the Storhouse as 500-600 warriors of the iNdluyengwe form in the classic 'horn' attack formantion. Once in postion they advance at a run towards the south wall of the outpost. The defenders immediately opened fire with controled volley; the distance was between 300-400 yards....The Lt.

Your workd is outstanding. You have remembered to make the Zulus really outnumber the red coats. Often we have a tnedency to collect more red coats than Zulus and teh mass effect is lost. Rorkes Drift was fought mostly at night. On the Conte website there were some fantascti night dioramas using his stuff. I thisk he used some sort of light bulb stuck behind a black `board to create the effect. Have a look it may give you some ideas. Well done. It is very impressive

As the defenders warmed to their task they became more accurate with their fire...The Lt.

As sections of B Company 2/24th continue to fire at random selecting their targets others are insuring there's enough ammo on hand to support their fire. A private after filling his helmet with ammo dashes off as he passes the Reverend George Smith Acting Chaplin to the Volunteers whose handing Sergeant George Smith a packet of ammo.....The Lt.

Lt., your battle and photos are as impressive as ever. The proportions of your Hospital and Storehouse and crates and mielee bag positions are right on from your books. Your knowledge of the battles, makes one wonder if you had been there. The collection you have is priceless and Thank you for sharing it with us. I just got a camera, I've been tinkering around taking pictures. They seem to be comming out good. I have been so busy building the farm houses and walls. I will try some time this week to post them on Treefrog. I love this site, there are so many talented hobbyists. Battle on and keep the photos comming. Mike.

Thanks Daiman for your comments and will ask Joe Baker how he creates his night scenes. Mike nice hearing from you and I'm looking forward to seeing your photos and Kevin what an outstanding job you've done with your Battle of the Bulge looking forward to more photos. Once again the private dashes off after refilling his helmet with ammo and heads to join Lieutenant Bromhead who with Second Coporal Francis Attwood and Lieutenant Adendoff are firing at the advancing Zulu.....Joe

Those Conte Zulus look nice don't they? I had to go buy another set after I saw all the work you have done! Thanks for the inspiration.;)

I do agree with you K.V. the Conte Zulus do look good when painted I only wish RC had also done them it metal. At 1630 hours as the Zulu attack is caught in a cross fire from the rear of the Hospital and Commissary Storehouse and due to heavy casualties the assault collapses. The Zulus then veer to the left moving into the bushes in front of the Hospital. After barely pausing to regroup they launch their first attack against the front of the Hospital where the are greeted with a heavy volume of fire from the defenders...The Lt.

There are lots of interesting asides with these events. Durnford was much disliked by the Natal colonists for a previous disaster trying to arrest Langalibelel in which several Natal Carbineers had been injured. Chelmsford was only to keen to put the blame onto him to try and divert the spotlight from himself and Crealock. He started a smear campaign against Durnbford. Durnford was estrnaged from his wife and had an unconsumated love affair with Fanny Colenso the daughter of the redoubtable Bishop of Natal. On hearing of hid death she experienced in her own words " A sorrow beyond earthly help" She spent most of teh rest of her life trying to clear Durnford.

The Zulus continue to press their attack but the defenders maintain the ground.....The Lt.
