Thoughts on the new Romans. (1 Viewer)

Just curious - does anyone know if these Romans are representatives of a particular Legion? I know the command set has a few standard bearers but I can't recall if a particular unit was depicted.

Larso I cut and paste this from my original comments about the figures when the line was released. Hope this helps.

The Legion portrayed is none other then the famous and feared 14th Gemina Martia Victrix Legion, the old trustworthy eagle wings and thunderbolts. It is still up for debate when this legion obtained the eagle wings and thunderbolts but one thing is for certain is that it was definitely given the honor sometime between 43 and 61A.D. Surprisingly this legion was sorta of the laughing stock prior to 43 when it nearly got wiped out by the Eburone tribe in 54 B.C followed up the previous year by losing another 2,000 men in an engagement with Germans. Germanicus turned the legions fortune in 14-16 A.D. where it fought bravely against German tribes and in 43 AD it was the 14ths time to shine during the invasion of Britain. Although 43 AD earned them a reputation among the legions it was not until Boudicas revolt in 60-61A.D. that they became feared by their enemies when they beat back Boudicas 230,000 rebels with the odds heavily against them 23 to 1.

Excellent! Thanks for all that - I really love the history of it all.

It's quite off topic but the closest modern equivilents are probably the US divisions. Though their histories are generally not as long yet, I say this because of the breadth of service some of them have now got. British regimental histories are the most amazing of all but they have been amalgamated away for the great part.

Just when I thought I'd caught up on the figures on my list, I see another wave of Romans/Celts - including a stunning chariot! - hit us at the end of October. They are all must haves for me. What a brilliant range!

Me again. The price of the chariot seems great value. I see there is an A & B notation. Does anyone know what this means? Are there two variations?

I think this new release looks really promising. I think the paint job on the horses look a little underwhelming though but perhaps it's the picture quality. Will be interesting to see what changes have occurred with the legionaires swords.

I liked what I saw in Chicago with this latest release. The figures seemed to be more developed then the previously released batch. I'm thinking the horses are not as striking because they are actually ponies. They appear to be smaller and stockier than a horse would be but thats what you want when you see a war chariot because the majority of them were drawn by ponies and not horses. Good job CS for doing the research.

Yes, I think they are modeled after Fell ponies. I'm excited about the chariot set, but when I look at the pics the implied motion of the charioteer and passenger doesn't seem to match up that well the animation of the ponies. I would think the ponies would be in a head down, hard charge from the postures of the Celts w/ their hair blowing back and all. Then again, I was not at the show and have not seen the set "in the metal".

Got my chariot today! The ponies look fine size wise. The standout is the chariot 'driver'! The A and B business is just the naming of the two boxes that the set comes in. There've been three big releases of this line, so all going well there'll be another early on next year - hopefully just as extensive as this one. Again, I put out my suggestion for a few of those longer shields I wrote about previously. Maybe also time for some Roman cavalry? The first chariot has worked pretty well I think, so I hope there are more of those to come too. Otherwise, I'd just be happy with more of these great infantry figures from both sides!

Received the Celtic Chariot for Christmas. After assembly (no instructions, had to follow box top picture), I noticed that because of the restricted length of the reins, the Yoke rides on top of the horses' necks, in lieu over the shoulders. If the reins were a bit longer, it would allow the yoke to ride lower on the neck or upper shoulders, and the chariot's floor would then be level to the ground. Any suggestions, or is the chariot floor is correct in an incline?

Reins need to be slightly lengthened to match as shown on the box.
