Well my fellow treefroggers it's been wonderful getting to know all of you in this small hobby of ours, but I must call it a day, due to the fact that I had become over vealous in my quest for that next piece, or that elusive retired piece, or the s.l. set or whatever the case was at the time, my life had become nothing but the hunt for the next set instead of the enjoyment I use to get out of my hobby, it has caused strain on my marriage as well as my wallet ha!!! so I do have alot of stuff listed on sale at e-bay, I will miss the collecting part, but I have always wanted to do a little sports memorabilia collecting, hoping it doesn't turn into a hunt as well:):), I will always be a forum member as long as you guys will have me, I'm not a sell-out, just time to move on, thanks for all the help, info, and being my favorite hobby buddies...Sammy

Sorry to hear that Sammy, when a hobby is causing strain on your relationship its time to give it up.Glad you are sticking around though.

All the best

Rob

Sorry to hear that Anthony; when a hobby causes you stress, then it's best to move on as the point of a hobby is to enjoy it, not become stressed over it.

Take care of yourself and best of luck in whatever you decide to pursue; life is short, so enjoy the ride................

good luck to you ,sounds as tho its your relationship causing strain on your hobby ,something i can empathise with,a number of years ago i faced a similar situation and i took the extreme view of binning the relationship rather than the hobby but hey thats the crazy world we live in. ken

Sammy,

I can not say it any better than this! Bravo for taking care o family first. May I suggest that you hold onto one special piece/set so that you can relive at times this wonderful hobby. As for sports items, check out our very own Forum Squadron Member, "SHOWMAN" as he specializes in that arena and more importantly, can be trusted! Just go slow and recover first so you do not make the same moves that put you in this position. Once again, best of luck and job well done on a tough decision.

Hang Tough,
Marc

Life is about choices... I too, have been curbing my purchases in the last year and will continue keeping my collecting habits manageable and within reason, nowhere near what it was just a couple of years ago, but I don't believe I can ever stop reliving history in miniatures... Good luck to you!

This is a related problem to the collecting 'problem.' I am a collector...period. I dont consider it a disease..but, perhaps, it is. I collect military miniatures..sports cards...some stamps..some coins. If collecting for me is a disease in a sense..any reason I give for collecting is an excuse. I would argue that my reasons are valid. Military miniatures..king and country..figarti..some britains, etc..mainly world war II..a little wwI. I collect mainly vehicles with a scattering of airplanes. I started out collecting a dozen or so years ago out of respect for my uncle who fought in bastogne and out of respect for my father, who fought in Indochina. My collection, like others on board here, has gotten out of hand not only for cost reasons, but, for space reasons in that I cant display most of them, any more. I am trying to slow down purchases because it really does put a strain on my relationship with my wife. But, here is the reason for my post: the strain between wife and me is financially..but that is secondary. The strain is that my wife (and grown children) have absolutely no interest in my hobby or displays. I know you might say: your hobby is for YOUR enjoyment. Thats true..but, when I set up a dio that really is impressive..and historically meaningful and instructive, nobody really cares. I am a chicago blackhawk hockey fan..and this 'problem' of mine would be like Patrick Kane scoring a hat trick and winning the vital game...in front of an empty stadium. Maybe, I am still a little kid who needs a pat on the back..or a "job, well done!"...some kind of response to make my efforts more meaningful. My cat snuck into and on one of my display shelves. I took it as a fan of mine appreciating my winter king tiger..but, I finally realized, he was just sitting there jealous of my attention. Seriously, do any of you have this kind of environment where no one else cares or appreciates your collection or displays? Money and budget concerns obviously are slowing my purchases..but, even more so..is that no one but me really cares. Comments would be appreciated...paul

.................................................................................................

A very informative and interesting post Paul. I know the feeling!:D I guess its all part of the "Collecting" experience. I have loved toys and old trains all my life. A few years ago I spent quite awhile building a train layout. It had Marklin trains with a complete rail yard and signal control so 4 trains could run at the same time. Around the outside I had a Lionel Super "O" loop with a rare Virginan Rectifier Set. The only person I could get to view the layout in operation was Boo my Great Pyrenees. Boo would usually stand around until my supply of cookies ran out....then he would leave also.

Our collections have special meaning to us, expecting the wife, or family to feel the same way is really a stretch. I am lucky that my daughter asked for items for her home which made me feel good.:)

My wife usually stops in once a day....looks around shakes her head and quietly leaves.

I consider my collection an old friend. I enjoy it every day if only for 5 minutes. It does take some work, and a little discipline.

The most important thing is that it should bring only enjoyment to everyone involved.:)

Boo decides if he will visit the Den for a cupcake!:D

Well for me...the beauty of it comes with delivery. I have a 3 year old daughter who loves it when I come in the door with a box and says...."daddy is that more soldiers" I love it! My wife loves it! and my daughter loves opening the packages and seeing what comes out...and I can honestly say I see here eyes seeing things that amaze her...they glow...and I'm sure mine are too!

Paul,

All I have to say is that a hobby or interest is highly personal. I collect military miniatures because of my love for history and an appreciation for the art invloved in making a toy soldier figure. I also, find it interesting in what others choose to collect or do because I understand their passion even if it doesn't appeal to me. People must have passions to keep life interesting whatever it may be. I just hope that they have the ability to pursue them as best as they can to make themselves happy...

Spot on.If I thought collecting was damaging my marriage I wouldn't hesitate in getting rid of it all,its only a hobby.

Wow Paul thats quite a sad statement and I'm sorry to hear it.My wife does show quite an interest in what I'm collecting and my dioramas. She gives me her opinion on various aspects of my hobby. When I set out to do an RAF airfield she suggested that as I already had lots of troops I should do something with more action in it,and suggested I do a D Day scene instead. She can also identify several of my Tanks and this always makes me smile.

It is an expensive Hobby no doubt about it,but the main thing is never to lie about it.My wife knows how much I spend and if we can't afford something I know when to stop.My Hobby is very important to me but it will only ever be a hobby,it will never be important enough to threaten my marriage.

BINGO, I could'nt have said it better!
My wife and my 8 year old son have no interest in my collection, although my wife has a vey keen eye for quality. I sometimes get some jokes or protests from them, but I think we have striked a balance till now...
But of course, who knows what the future will bring, I guess many of us will reach the point of no more room, no more collecting unless we can keep our collection revolving: older items sold, eye catching novelties coming in...

Thanks for all the kind words guys, my marriage is wonderful, and my wife didn't have any idea that I was moving on with my collection, shocked her really, but I think happy in the same, but I will stay on the forum, it's always great to have discussions about different topics and such with you all, so no tears here, and when my sports memoriabilia is done all post some pics of that instead of soldiers:):)...Sammy
