It is just a hobby, don’t forget that...Even if you have a lots of money I don’t see the necessity to buy and buy and buy each month release, it seems sometimes that some collectors are disputing WHO have more toy soldiers displayed etc...

IMO, one of the pleasures of this is to waiting for a specific figurine and take the time to choose appropriately, the satisfaction is ten times better.....

Thanks for your responses. I dont think any less of my wife that she doesnt share my collecting passions. After tweaking the angle of attack on some of my frontal soldiers, I go and join her in the tv room...and, honestly, I can only sit for a few minutes and watch HER Food Channel selection (that Southern woman who uses butter on everything..even on her napkins). Fortunattely for me, my uncle is still with me...and he comes over and appreciates what I have assembled. He was a gunner on a Hellcat T.D...and her will add a comment here and there...like: "we never slept in our tanks..they were like ice boxes!"..or he would tell me about how bad the weather was and he depended more on sounds (of danger) then seeing danger. I have a K&C Hellcat and he would turn it on a certain angle. That makes my hobby meaningful. The most dangerous part of my hobby IS when the packages arrive on my doorstep or when the doorbell rings and I know someone left a package for me. Thats when I can hear the growl coming from the kitchen and I know I will be having hamburger helper for dinner. I will not stop collecting..I will try to be more selective. The only place I have to display my wares is in the dining room. I have four small and two large curio cabinets, there. My revenge is on Thanksgiving when her side of the family comes and I see her sisters enjoying the aroma of hot turkey gravey..yet, behind them, over their shoulders is a shelf of V-2 and an elongated V-1 ramp with cradled rocket ready for launch. My wife will complain after her company leaves that it is hard to remain focused during grace when they are surrounded by tank treads and fixed bayonets. Well, yesterday my last cabinet arrived. Now, in back of the other side of the family table will be a full display of Russian tanks with bombed out buildings and that K&C figure playing his accordian in front of his rocket launcher. Yes, sometimes victory is semi-sweet..til it turns into the War of Roses....thanks for all your feedback, paul

Glad to read that you will stay on the forum, Sammy. A word of advice from someone who has been there, be careful with the sports memorabilia. It is great stuff but can get expensive, fast. And there are a LOT of fakes on the market. That said, it is a fun hobby. I dismantled my collection quite a while back but did keep some favorite pieces. Good hunting. -- Al

An interesting topic. None of my family has any real interest in my collection. Only my daughter and boyfriend really look at them at all, on their visits. My wife tolerates them but really knows nothing about them, nor do my sons, for that matter. No one has ever expressed any negative comments or reactions, so no problems there. I'm just alone in my interest and hobby, as I'm sure many of us are. Thus this great forum. -- lancer

This is a related problem to the collecting 'problem.' I am a collector...period. I dont consider it a disease..but, perhaps, it is. I collect military miniatures..sports cards...some stamps..some coins. If collecting for me is a disease in a sense..any reason I give for collecting is an excuse. I would argue that my reasons are valid. Military miniatures..king and country..figarti..some britains, etc..mainly world war II..a little wwI. I collect mainly vehicles with a scattering of airplanes. I started out collecting a dozen or so years ago out of respect for my uncle who fought in bastogne and out of respect for my father, who fought in Indochina. My collection, like others on board here, has gotten out of hand not only for cost reasons, but, for space reasons in that I cant display most of them, any more. I am trying to slow down purchases because it really does put a strain on my relationship with my wife. But, here is the reason for my post: the strain between wife and me is financially..but that is secondary. The strain is that my wife (and grown children) have absolutely no interest in my hobby or displays. I know you might say: your hobby is for YOUR enjoyment. Thats true..but, when I set up a dio that really is impressive..and historically meaningful and instructive, nobody really cares. I am a chicago blackhawk hockey fan..and this 'problem' of mine would be like Patrick Kane scoring a hat trick and winning the vital game...in front of an empty stadium. Maybe, I am still a little kid who needs a pat on the back..or a "job, well done!"...some kind of response to make my efforts more meaningful. My cat snuck into and on one of my display shelves. I took it as a fan of mine appreciating my winter king tiger..but, I finally realized, he was just sitting there jealous of my attention. Seriously, do any of you have this kind of environment where no one else cares or appreciates your collection or displays? Money and budget concerns obviously are slowing my purchases..but, even more so..is that no one but me really cares. Comments would be appreciated...paul

Paul brings up a very interesting angle.

As many of you know, I collect the small scale toy soldiers (20mm, or 1/72nd scale). When I bought my townhouse, the toy sodliers found a great home in the basement, where I have six shelving units packed with my collection and a 10 foot by 5 foot display area where I set up my dioramas.

My girlfriend will occasionally wander downstairs when I am in the middle of setting up one of my displays and she is always impressed with the scope and amount of figures and vehicles, etc, etc in the displays.

I am sorry to hear if some of your collections or your collecting in general is not well recieved, maybe some of you should ask your wives if you can see their shoe collection, I am sure that would be a thrill a minute.......

I was at the Chicago gathering and heard Andy talk about our collecting as being a niche situation. Price definitely starts to separate alot of people from being fanatical about it..but, it goes way beyond that. My wife..my kids..my friends not having an interest in the historical aspect of the depictions speaks of a greater, much more serious problem. Too many people collect era related items..be it sports cards or tanks and soldiers..that they can relate to. There, practically, arent anyone around to touch bases with world war I items. My uncle is 85 and getting more prescious to me as a close friend and relative..and also because he is a true asset. He is LIVING history. Most neighbors around me know nothing of the Korean War. They know very little of world war II, other than they probably have or had a distant uncle or father who fought in that war. Unless your kids go to a special, talented school, I cant imagine how our history is merely dusted over. I remember purchasing a Ted Williams baseball card in mint condition..I rushed over to my son's house to show him..and he said: "Its a beautiful card, but, who is Ted Williams?" Collecting military items from different wars..or old stamps or old baseball cards, etc is an opportunity for many to learn and to appreciate what use to make this country so great. Again, I dont blame my wife's lack of interest. Some of your children will see the soldiers and might even take it a few steps further and learn about their sacrifice. But, for too many, each generation will produce even more who wont take that extra step..or wont even care to. Andy was right..this is a niche hobby. I love this forum because I can sense people love what they are doing..and in a non-selfish way, they love it for themselves. And, so will I. (Just a sidenote about our American school system. My daughter who is now thirty years old...when she was in junior COLLEGE..while studying for a final exam for her Geography 101 class...actually, stopped reading her text and asked me: "Dad...Canada is a country...right?" Now, why should I ever be disappointed in her because she doesnt know what a tank destroyer is.)

This reminds me of the time I bought a high end tv and sound system with the help of a friend of mine and he hooked it all up for me. He went out of the room to use the mens room to wash up and when he came back, I had Gettysburg cranked up on the tv and sound system and he said to me "Leave it to you after getting such an awesome system that instead of playing a shoot em up action movie you are watching a movie about the Revolutionary War"..................I was speechless.

But this is the same guy who said after another of our friends saw Titantic and said the recreation of the sinking of the ship was awesome said "Oh great, thanks for ruining the ending of the movie for me, no sense in me going to see it now"........he was right, no sense at all................of history.
