Surprised nobody mentioned this yet.

Great book by Le Carre.

Great cast of British actors :

Gary Oldman
John Hurt
Colin Firth
Mark Strong
Ciaran Hinds
Tom Hardy
Benedict Cumberbatch (the Brit cavalry officer in War Horse and Sherlock Holmes in TV series).

Strong seems to be very busy. First noticed him in Body of Lies as the Arab intelligence head. Was also in Syriana. Also done Rock N Rolla, Robin Hood, Sherlock Holmes, The Eagle and The Guard and has another 6 on the way !!!

Was looking into Tom Hardy's movies and noticed he had done a movie called The Legionnaire which is based on book of same name by Simon Murray. Better known as the “Tai Pan” of Hong Kong in the ‘80s and ‘90s, he was a former soldier in the French Foreign Legion for five years - an experience he wrote about in his autobiography Legionnaire. Seems he also broke record for oldest to get to South Pole on foot at 64.
Read the book but never heard of the movie so will look out for it.

Highly recommend the Tinker movie.

Brett

I haven't seen it yet (and do want to see it) but I saw the promos and wasn't overly impressed. I have read practically all of Le Carre's books and particularly the Smiley books. Not only that but I have the DVDs of Tinker, Tailor and Smiley's People, which starred Alec Guinness, with a fine supporting cast. I must have watched Tinker Tailer countless times and watch it at least twice a year. Alec Guinness is George. The series was faithful to the books. I have my doubts that this is. In all fairness, you can do more in six hours than you obviously can do in two but the original production captured the Cold War brilliantly.

Brad,

I am not sure how you could do a good promo on this. No big fight scenes or much action. Just a good script with good cast. I have not seen Smiley for a long time so did not remember it much when watching this.

Brett

I much prefer the original series, the new movie was rather slow imo.

I have just pre ordered this from sky box office for later this evening
Mitch

Let me know what you think . Best cold war film for me is Richard Burton The man who came in from the cold

Neil..

Will do. To my shame I only saw the Burton film a few months ago. It was excellent as you say.

The Spy Who Came in From the Cold is an excellent movie. You get the real feeling for the Cold War and what a lonely existence it is. I believe that George Smiley has a small role in the book and maybe the movie. He also show up in the Looking Glass War, another excellent Le Carre book.

Read the book twice. Son and wife both said the movie was slow as mentioned in this thread. I probably would have thought the same but am such a fan of LeCarre, his Cold War books anyway, not so much his later works. THe mini series was outstanding with Alec Guiness. Agree, Spy Who Came in From the Cold captured Cold War era much better.

Anyone read Small Town in Germany? Much like SPy Who Came In... but not as well known. Chris

Neil...

Watched it last night. I quite enjoyed it. I can see why some would say it was slow but, its not supposed to be the action packed fast paced film that makes you wonder where your hour and a half went. Some good acting and, decent dialogue

Thought it was a good film not slow but lack a edge to the film but if you liked the tv show then your like this

I finally saw this last night and was disappointed. LeCarre said the 1979 version starring Sir Alec Guiness was complete and should not be remade. He was right. The book as well as the series was a richly drawn multi layered look at British society and the characters were rich and fascinating people. That has been lost here.

In the movie, aside from Gary Oldman's and John Hurt's portrayals they come through as cartoonish. The casting of many such as the actor who played Percy Alleleine were miscast. The story was also changed and you have to wonder why. Prideaux was shot in Czechoslovakia and not Hungary. Why? Even the brief view of Czecho in the series was taut and brilliant.

The story is complicated and unless you have read the book or seen the series it can be confusing. The movie lacks in that respect. In trying to make this into a two hour movie you lose a lot of the story. My wife was constantly asking me about this detail or that detail.

Ultimately, very disappointing. Grab the series instead for one of the best things you'll ever see.

I tried watching this film on a long-haul flight - so it was constantly interupted! Nevertheless - I have to agree with everything that Brad writes below. A very poor re-make - and the original made for TV series is SO much better. Grab it whilst you can. johnnybach:D
