Ales, you should expand your selection of John Wayne films. The best westerns ever made (IMHO) are JW and John Ford films. These include "The Searchers" (best ever), "Fort Apache", "She Wore A Yellow Ribbon", "Rio Grande", "Stagecoach". Also do not miss "Red River" and "Rio Bravo", "True Grit", and "The Shootist". Many great JW films, some with indians, some not. Do not miss "The Searchers". -- lancer

There are many great westerns to choose from but my top 10 list would be as follows
1) High Noon
2) Shane.
3) Unforgiven
4) Outlaw Josey Wales
5) Red River
6) The Wild Bunch
7) Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
8) Silverado
9) The Searchers
10) The Magnificant Seven
with Open Range, Yellow Ribbon and Stagecoach close alternates.

Agree with Lancer (and Spielberg/Scorsese/Milius/Lucas/Kurosawa) that "The Searchers" is also in my opinion the greatest character driven and beautifully filmed western in the history of Hollywood it is simply an outstanding classic.

Is the last Mochican the same movie and the "Last of the Mochicans"?

If so. I wouldn't consider that a western by a long shot. :p

Also, agree with Deitz that "Unforgiven" is my favorite also. I story line just seems to copy real life so well.

I agree it is a classic Bob and certainly on my list as noted. The Duke was seldom (if ever) better, Ford is generally excellent and the cinematography is to die for. Frankly it was Jeffery Hunter's acting and the writing for his character that keeps me from rating it higher. His character and his voice just grates on me. I do appreciate the evolution of his character that the film presents but I would have cast it differently and given him some better lines.

I think "High Noon" is the greatest Western ever made.

Well i did watch almost all westerns of John Wayne and i know that people call him king of westerns but for me it is not so good acter.I think if you saw one of his movie you saw all of them.
Searchers,Unforgiven,High Noon i watch and i read a lot in some magazines, rewievs that this are top of the top western but for me there are nothing special. We just have a diferent taste i guees.
I think Kirk Douglas,Richard Vidmark,Lee Marwin,Burt Lanchaster,...are much more better actors than John Wayne.
Hm i remember another great westerns Vera Cruz,Cheyene autumn,Blue Soldier,....
For me the real western are with the indians. But it is nice to see your top ten,i hope others will tell us theirs

I enjoy all of the classic westerns and I watch Tombstone with Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer a couple of times a year. If I come across the film while surfing channels I always end up watching it.

The Outlaw Josie Wells, The Good, the Bad & the Ugly, For a Fist Full of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, High Plains Drifter, A Mule for Sister Sara . . . do you sense a connection here?

Val Kilmer played one the greatest parts in a western of all time.Great movie.
Hard to name the best one, their are so many.Shame westerns and other period pieces don't do so well today.
