Well, thanks, Damian! I must confess, I haven't yet read any of Chesterton's works, I've only read about them and him. I've added some to my reading list but haven't got to them yet.

Prost!

He is criminally overlooked by the chattering classes of today. Another nasty trick they use against him is to say he was a fascist. This is not true. It was his brother AK Chesterton who was a close friend and supporter of Oswald Mosley. He wrote fascist polemics not GK. The Everlasting man and orthodxy are very good.

I have never seen the publication, I don't believe they carry it at Borders,

or Barney Nobels here in Atlanta. I have to say $14.95 would cause me to

quickly put it back!

Njja
Or you could just read it over a $5.00 cup of coffee and put it back when you're finished! That saves you close to $10.00;).

I can't see spending my TS $$$ on magazine, especially since anything really worthwhile would be posted here on the forum, say new winter King Tiger:D. It's more cost effective to let someone else buy it then do some online sponging to get the relevant info:D.

Funny you should mention that! When we used to go to Borders, or

"Barney Nobells" usually on Friday nights after the movies, I was always

amazed at all the folks sitting in chairs reading!:D

Little by little the chairs have been reduced to a handful......and people

began sitting on the floor.

Now my local stores have maybe 4 chairs each (couple of benches in BN)

but folks are still sitting on the floor.........not exactly for me!

Guys

Not defending any magazine price etc as i have no ventured interest.

However as TSC is now in Borders in USA there will be distripution costs involved adding to the shipping etc! So the $14.50 will reflect this. Problems of having a UK Mag in stores in USA.

Looking at the prices in the mag is it not cheaper for you guys to Sub to it i think that works out at $9?? am i wrong?

Again as i said on another forum we had a Univercity do some work with our business and we found that 80% of the customer base for K&C UK are NOT ONLINE users!!! no adverts in magazines = 80% of market not seeing you!!

Mind you should ask the guys on the price of Adverts in these compared to some other magazines we advertise in..............at least Dick Turpin wore a mask!!:D

You're correct, Tony, I take a subscription, and the per-issue cost, including shipping, works out to less than the $14.50 newsstand price, a little more than $9, I think I calculated it out to $11, but still, cheaper than newsstand.

Prost!

I used to go for $100 a month on magazines for wife and I. Usually on a saturday we would go to one of the local book stores pick up 4 or 5 each and
wife would head to Williams Sonoma (while I picked up the tab):D

Finally I wised up and subscribed to all our favorite magazines........now she gets 6 or 8 a month.......I get 6 back issues of all mine (all at once) and a renewal notice:eek::eek:

Subscriptions and me........we don't get along. A few years ago I joined Collectors Club for 2 years..........year later I was sent a renewal:eek:

This time I spray painted my renewal date on the wall in my den:D:D

We'll see.:)

I used to buy heaps of hobby magazines when I was a young and keen collector. But it wasn't long before I had piles of them lying around taking up space with their contents long ago overtaken by events. Now I only buy a magazine if there are articles of particular interest to me. Which doesn't happen often as it is usually the same old thing.

This is another good point. Before you know it they are taking up a lot of room and once looked at i rarely read them again.TSTV/Treefrog are the future i think.

Some people, myself included like a good magazine. There has been a lot of speculation on the price increase. The falling dollar is the only one that seems to make sense. I am just not going to read this one anymore. If there had been a small increase I would have probably kept reading it. I like the pictures.

Also they do not need to ship. They could send it via internet to another publisher here in the US or anywhere to cut costs. And have them printed in that country. Shipping just does not make sense.

Kilted

Good point!

i would say the doller and also Borders looking for a little more profit are some of the primary factors. Seams funny that when it goes 'High Street' the price jumps!!

Tony

The only good thing was news about some of the less mainstream manufacturers.

Yeah, that's why I pick up this magazine. With the internet you have to go out of your way to miss the propoganda of the big boys but the smaller manufacturers need a little help to get noticed. There's also info in them you can't get online, like the new Tommy Atkins Haida canoes which aren't shown on their website.

The other main reason I buy this magazine is it's on local newstands whereas Toy Soldier Model Figure mag has never been available locally. I also like the layout of Toy Soldier Collector a little more, it's more streamlined and not so cluttered with needless red stars and bars underneath every heading. I agree the price per issue is prohibitive but surprisingly, for this particular mag it's actually cheaper in Canada than the US which is very welcome.

But I still owe Toy Soldier and Model Figure Magazine a big one for the Figarti tiger I won in one of their contests. :p So they're both good mags, expensive but good. The only thing I don't like in either mag is their reviews, because they never come out critically and analyze sets for their historical accuracy, sculpting, painting, and packaging quality. Instead they just tend to summarize the contents of the set and conclude with a useless statement like "these should appeal to those interested in the time period". Well, duh.
