Travelling to Brazil (2 Viewers)

I can tell you some stories about three guys I knew that went to work In Brazil on an Aircraftcarrier they had there in Rio. I guess the British gave Brazil the Carrier and the goverment contrated for workers in the Millwrights Union here to fix it up. They were there for just eight weeks, but they contracted to work there for 4 months. Yeah, you guessed it, they got booted out of the counrty after they started a small riot. One night in Rio one of the guys beat-up a pick-pocket. It drew a small crowd that quickly became hostile when they saw they was American. Needless to say they had to fight there way back to their hotel and only when a undercover cop in the hotel lobby fired shots into the air did the crowd stop their attack, it was ugly. The next day the police took them to the airport.

One night one of them was on a beach in Rio romancing a local. He bought a guitar off one of the beach peasants and was smoking a........ you know. The next minute a Policeman with a machine gun told him to get up he was under arrest! He bribed him for $8.00 to let him go.

One of the guys ended up going back to Rio and married a Brazilian girl he met on the beach. We thought he was nuts, but he made a good argument that he would be rich there with all the money he saved and he could never marry a more beauty women were. He's living there like a king.

They all loved Brazil.

Yes, this sort of riot happens in Rio. Most pickpockets belong to what they call a "bonde" (gang), and sometimes these bondes are composed of 30 or 40 members! They defend each other and share their earnings at the end of the day! It's almost like a family...

Police is Rio is notoriously corrupt. If that guy tried that stunt in Porto Alegre or São Paulo he would be arrested on two charges, not one!
:D

The cost of living is very low here in Brazil. Food is plenty and cheap, everything is very reasonably priced. If you go to a first class churrascaria, one that will serve you with:
40 + different kinds of meat;
12 kinds of bread;
12 kinds of salads;
20 different hot or cold dishes.

You may pay only US$25.00!!!!!!!!
:cool::cool:

Now, where on Earth you could sit on an excellent restaurant from 11:30 am to 3:30 pm, as I did last easter, eat over 20 different dishes and pay US$25.00??? Churrascos and churrascarias are something you, gentlemen, have to try once in your lifetime!

Cheers...

I will start our Brazilian tour in the south. The southern region of Brazil is composed of three states: Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Paraná.

Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state is Brazil, is my home state and we are very proud to have a quality of life comparable to European countries! We have some similarities with Texas: We are proud, have fought on many wars and were once an independent nation. We chose to be part of Brazil as Texas did with the USA.

The capital of Rio Grande do Sul is Porto Alegre, my hometown and where I live. Porto Alegre, a big city with over 1.6 million inhabitants, is reputed to have one of the most beautiful sunsets in the world and to be the city with most trees in the world. Check these pictures:
portoalegre1.jpg

portoalegre2.jpg

Here you see Porto Alegre in the background with the islands of the Guaiba River delta in the front:
p_alegre07.jpg

Porto Alegre has a beautiful downtown, full of squares and historical buildings:

portoalegre3.jpg

You will feel safe in Porto Alegre and Rio Grande do Sul (the southern region in general), no one will know you're a foreign tourist, because some 90% of the population here is white and almost half of us have green or blue eyes. You will be "invisible" here.

If you come to Rio Grande do Sul you should visit our highlands. Gramado, for instance:
gramado3.jpg

gramado1.jpg

As you can see, gentlemen, it snows in Gramado during the winter. But the weather is so mild, it snows at night and by mid-morning the sun will have melted it all! You will never have problems with the snow there.

Other options in Rio Grande do Sul include the Vale dos Vinhedos (Vineyard Valley) a 50 sq miles area all covered in vineyards that produce excellent wines, comparable to those of Chile and Argentina!

You could also visit our Estancias (ranches), where cattle has been raised for centuries, and they give you an idea of life in the old Rio Grande do Sul:
2136372646_272ddcc50c.jpg

Several Estancias are also hotels these days, and they are an excellent option to relax in complet peace a quiet.

You shouldn't miss the churrasco (barbecue Rio Grande do Sul style). It's an orgy for the taste, actually. Good churrascarias offer 40+ kinds of meat (including such wonders as wild boar and lobster), a dozen different kinds of bread, a dozen different kinds of salads, 20 + dishes (both hot and cold). You can confortably sit back for 4 or 5 hours and eat at your leisure...

The meat is served by waiters, Rio rande do Sul style:
churrasco.jpg

It's also a very cheap experience, food is outrageously cheap here. Expect to pay US$25.00 or $30.00 at a first class churrascaria.

Now, that's only a sample of Rio Grande do Sul, I will continue with the other southern states later.

Cheers...

Well, I was showing this thread to my wife and she said I should add pictures of 3 more places in Rio Grande do Sul, so here they are:

The beach of Torres (Towers):

The Ruins of the Mission at Sao Miguel (St Michael):

Some of you may have seen a great movie called The Mission, with Robert de Niro. Well, this movie is about a war that took place here, when the indians commanded by jesuits fought the empires of Spain and Portugal. This is actually the birth of Rio Grande do Sul (and the death of the missions). In these war the indians invented their own firearms, something that never happened anywhere else in the world! Watch the movie, it shows their ingenuity.

And finally the cannyon of Itaimbezinho, a breath-taking place:

I hope you all liked Rio Grande do Sul! We, gauchos, the people from Rio Grande do Sul, are very proud of it.
:D

Well, my friends, if only for cultural reasons, and if the moderators agree, I will include a couple of pictures of Brazilian models (no nudes because the kids may be watching!)
:D

I'm waiting for this post.

Thank you Uthred for what you've shown us thus far.A lot of us don't really realize the vast differences of Brazil. Will keep checking this thread for more.

Thank you, Mark!

There are actually five different countries in Brazil, one for each different region. Not only the people, the climate, the geography and the culture are different, it's also a matter of different life styles, you know?

We only share the language (with different accents everywhere), the currency and our love for soccer!
:D

........................................................................................................

Okay wait a minute here......if you say Brazilian women are beautiful I think we would all like to see some visual proof!:D

I'm sure a few dozen tasteful photos could slip by the moderators:D

We will call it an international cultural exchange.:D

We will let an impartial source determine the beauty of the women in question......lets see who we could get?

Any volunteers? Harry?, Kilted Vampire?:D:D:)

Sorry guy's - definitely not me...!!!
I'm biased towards a certain nationality. And if that certain nationality catches me checking out other beautiful ladies on this computer - she's likely to pull the plug - on me...!!!

This is really some wonderful stuff here! thank you for taking us on a really

nice tour of your country! It really looks quite nice, and nothing like I

expected! I always believe your country had two basic parts the

beach/coast line or the jungle. With most of the people living on the coast.

You are certainly providing us wonderful information about Brazil!

Well, my friend, I'm glad you like it.
:D

Brazil has plenty of beaches and tropical rain forests, you are right about that. There's plenty more to Brazil, however.

The tropical rain forests are far away from here. I will tell you about them eventually, when I describe the northern region of Brazil. The tropical rain forests are located a few thousand miles away from here, around the Equator line!

Moving north we come to Santa Catarina, still in the southern Region. Santa Catarina is a very beautiful state, the population being almost all of German, Italian, Portuguese and Pole descent. The capital of Santa Catarina is Florianopolis:
florianopolis1.jpg

florianopolis2.jpg

Florianopolis is an island and has some amazingly beautiful beaches. Most Brazilian top models go to Florianopolis in the summer. It's probably a good place to go...

In Santa Catarina you'll find other nice beaches like Balneario Camboriu, whre you can actually sail a pirate ship replica, among other things! This is Balneario Camboriu:
bc2.jpg

If you go to the Highlands of Santa Catarina, you may want to travel through the Serra do Rio do Rastro (Rastro River Range). Its picturesque road is unbelievably gorgeous!
BXK29291_serra-do-rio-do-rastro800.jpg

If it's October, you could party in the largest Oktoberfest outside Germany, in Blumenau, where millions come for draft beer, German songs, and blue-eyed blonde German girls. Check it out:
BlumenauSCOktober-FotodivulgaC3A7C3.jpg

Next is Parana. The capital of Parana is Curitiba, a very beautiful city:
curitiba.jpg

Curitiba has a opera house called Opera de Arame (Wire Opera) that looks like a huge bird cage set upon a nice park, you should not miss it:
C393pera_de_Arame_-_Curitiba.jpg

In Parana you should also visit Foz do Iguazu, in the fronteires with Argentina and Paraguay, where the Iguazu River Falls are world famous (even James Bond has fallen on them!):
foz1.jpg

foz2.jpg

Do not forget to try pinhao, a local fruit that's common throughout the cold regions of southern Brazil, specially Parana:
pinhao03.jpg

Hope you liked it. I'll come back with southeastern Brazil (Sao Paulo and Rio) next!

Cheers...

Most people here don't realize how many people in Brazil and Argentina are of German and Italian descent. We think of South American people of being Portuguese in Brazil and Spanish in all other counties with large indian and mixed populations.

Yes, Mark, there are many indians in the northern and mid-western regions of Brazil. In the south they are scarce, though, less than 1% of the population I think.
