This is my report on Trophy soldiers at MFCA Show this week.

Well they did not have many, only one gentleman (Ed) from Gettysburg had some interesting sets including an Arab Dhow. However I could not justify paying his high prices (cash only)...A Dhow was very nice but had only 4 figures crew instead of usual 7 and had "bare metal" barrel instead of usual black...
Other dealers mostly had just a few single Trophy soldiers...

However I still managed to find and secure some interesting pieces.
1. Staff Car with an interesting variation: Lord Roberts with his wife (instead Aide de camp) and his driver. I have never seen this car in original box as well... It was "find of the day" which tops even an Arab Dhow "close encounter" :D

2. A very early Trophy Gurkha figure, which does not even look like a Trophy but was confirmed to be authentic by two reputable Trophy dealers.

3. Two early Highlanders (with oval bases) and a Sudan soldier in khaki uniform with a cup of tea but with WHITE base (Martyn should know what set did t come from)...

4. Two Trophy civilians : an early Chimney cleaner and a newsboy.

5. ZS42 "Taunting Zulus" in perfect condition in its box (not shown)...

Al

Well done.
Lovely sets.
Good on you for getting the staff car.

Tom picked up an afghan set from Ed which he thought might be rare. He plans on posting pics.

Hi Brad,
I actually posted its picture with other pictures from Ed's table (with exception of ACW sets" ) in another thread under "Trophy" section.

Hi Brad,
Yes it's hard to come by early set...the guy in the green turban is scarce in particular because the small parts on this figure are always broken off ... I was thinking about buying this set but just could not justify rarity/price ratio...:D
I am glad that Tom got it so it will stay in the Treefrog Forum Family
Al

Thanks Al. I purchased four ACW sets and am in the process of taking photos (while doing family duties :))

Due to Brad's purchases I got a few bucks off!!

Ya, I knew about the Green Turban guy, he is not even listed as part of the set from an early catalog, so I figure he must be even earlier!

Reason I bought the set was b/c I knew I probably wouldn't see it again. Pics posted soon.

PS, you are lucky I had the staff car!! I looked at it and it was a good price.

How the heck I missed the chimney sweep I don't know!

Al,
I am wondering if your white base sudan guy matches my white base cook (early one) as a Xmas special. I think we each have a half maybe? White bases are usually the Xmas ones.

Tom

ACW sets I picked up :)

Hi Al

Beautiful Staff car you have there, well done, it is now on my "Most Wanted" list:cool:

Could the Sudan soldier in picture no.3 be from the Nile Paddle Steamer, does the underneath of the base have a hint of any other colour?

It does look like we have both had a good weekend for Trophy finds;)

Cheers

Martyn:)

Hi Tom

I believe your figure is from set#AS. 12 a 5 figure set, my early catalogue has the following description

TRIBESMAN standing armed with sword and curved dagger with studded shield and wearing turban and typical Afghan dress

Looks like you, Al and Brad all had a great Show, nice one:cool:

Cheers

Martyn:)

Tom, we probably just "traded favors" because I saw Afghan set at dealers set up (when Ed sold his Sudan gunboat) and did not buy it :D
You are right, this set is rarely seen in this condition... I just knew that a small Trophy Afghan collection was already coming in my direction, so I would probably could get it cheaper :p
I missed the Staff Car on my first round and Alan (a dealer) actually brought to me later..
Right timing, a bit of good luck and a lot of leg work: all you need to find a good Trophy....

Al: That was a good buy on the staff car. Len said he made 67 of the staff car and 67 of the Raj auto when Rolls notified him to stop. You, Tom, Lawrence Lo and I have one of the staff car and Lawrence and I have the Raj auto and there is one in the museum that Redhugh posted. I wonder if any of the other Forum members have cars. In any event, if anyone has a chance to buy one, they better take it in my opinion.

Hello Tommy,
Thank you. There are actually two versions of Rolls Royce as far as I know: with RR logo and Trophy logo. Does RR notified Len to stop making RR car or marking these cars with RR logo?
Please also notice that my car has Mrs Roberts figure instead of Aide-de-Camp figure..Lowrance has the ADC figure in his car ... which one you have?
I also know at least two more collectors who have these cars....
Al

Hi Al: Mine have RR. Len said Rolls told him to either License with them or stop. I doubt if the Trophy logo did any good. I have the aide-de-Camp figure. I noticed your box described that also. Len said he stopped after Rolls notified him with 67 of each. Leave it to a Welshman to tweak their noses. Who else has cars?

Well I am still curios... why does my car come with a different figure?..We will let Martyn to check Len :p

Ok, now you guys got me curious as to which versions I have. I will have to pull out the Raj and the Lord RR and see what I have. I almost bought this one just to buy another, I knew it!!!!! I should never think rationally, I should always trust my impulses!!!
