Ward Just, one of the leading reporters of the Vietnam War, has died.

He was seriously injured in June 1966 when the unit he was with in the Central Highlands came under attack. He later wrote about Vietnam in his book “To What End? Report from Vietnam.”

He was also a highly respected novelist and short story writer.

As Martyn says.

Which basically is asking for help for the downed pilot to reach safety and promises reward.

Thanks to the use of undersea robots, the remains of Major Paul Avolese, who died in 1967 when two B-52s collided over the South China Sea, have been recovered from the ocean floor

There are still almost 1,600 missing in action and around 420 were believed to have been along the coastlines of South Vietnam or its territorial waters.

A lot of parallels going on this week between the end in Vietnam and the situation in Afghanistan. You have to wonder if the politicos truly thought that the Taliban would not return. Right decision to pull out but done in an incompetent manner. U.S. Embassy being evacuated just like the end in Vietnam. People fleeing for their lives. A disgrace. And they wonder why there is no faith in the statements about the vaccine when just a few weeks ago they were telling everyone that the situation in Afghanistan would be stable because they had trained the locals to defend themselves. Most of whom immediately joined the Taliban taking the equipment and training to the other side.

Are the choppers landing on the embassy roof yet? -- Al

While I agree that our government administrations and military leadership totally mishandled the Vietnam and Afghan Wars please don't try to equate this with Covid and vaccines.

Our brave men and women who fought in both conflicts deserve our respect and honor.
We need to finally learn our lesson that we can't get involved in Civil Wars, support corrupt governments and try to fight in our traditional style against insurgencies, tribal loyalties and religious fanatics.
We also have to realize that Pakistan aided and abetted the Taliban with safe havens and military council and Saudi Arabia financed the Taliban as they are fellow Sunnis. To win against the Taliban we would have had to
attack their safe havens and supply depots in Pakistan. Pakistan is a nuclear armed country supported by China and Russia so attacking them was problematic.
Its obvious that the Afghan army did not have the will nor leadership to fight on their own and we couldn't stay there forever. I do believe, however, that our withdrawal strategy was ill conceived and executed. We should have
brought out the "friendly" Afghans who worked with us before announcing the withdrawal and the withdrawal itself should not have been pre-announced. Now the Taliban will have billions of dollars of our advanced weapons.
There is plenty of blame to go around and I feel sorry for the Afghan women and young people who will undoubtedly be abused.

This has nothing to do with Covid Vaccinations. Take your Political views somewhere else.

No one who has went into Afghanistan has come out better than when they went in.

Excellent post.

Guys,

I’ve maintained this thread about five for over four years. I took a lot of time to create posts and add photos. For example the post on suggested readings took me several hours to create.

If you wish to discuss what happened in Afghanistan could you please start a separate thread because I don’t want to see this one ruined by the back and forth that will inevitably ensue. Thank you in advance.

Brad

Your Favorite Books on Vietnam.

Among readers’ favorites are

The Best and the Brightest - David Halberstam
Matterhorn - Karl Marlantes
The Cat From Hue - John Laurence
The Things They Carried - Tim O’Brien
A Bright Shining Lie - Neil Sheehan
Annam - Christopher Bataille
Dispatches - Michael Herr
Dereliction of Duty - H.R. McMaster
They Marched Into Sunlight - David Maraniss
This Eternity - Richard Wilks Taylor

I’m reposting this entry as I found the linked Times article very useful. There were a ton of great reading suggestions. One book that is particularly good, which I’m reading now, is Embers of War: The Fall of an Empire and the Making of America’s Vietnam by Fredrik Logevall. Highly recommended.

On April 29, George Washington University held a days length conference on Vietnam entitled “Vietnam: A 50 Year Retrospective.” It’s a very good conference on a whole host of issues and well worth the time. In the interests of full disclosure I’m a graduate of GWU.

I read a recent biography of J. Edgar Hoover and didn't realize he had such strong connections to GWU. He recruited most of the early FBI agents there.

Charles Truehart, the son of William Truehart, who was second in command of the US Embassy in 1963 in Saigon when Diem was killed, has a book out about the relationship between his father and friend, Fritz Nolting, the Ambassador at the time. The two friends split over loyalty to Diem, with Nolting being loyal to Diem and Truehart taking Washington’s side.

The name of the book is Diplomats at War: Friendship and Betrayal on the Brink of the Vietnam Conflict and it’s issued by the University of Virginia Press.

Thanks for the suggestion, this is next up on my reading list.
