War Movie Wish List (1 Viewer)

Would love to see someone like HBO do a WW1 series set on the Western front from Mons onwards, with their budget capacity and eye for realism it could be excellent.

Would also like HBO to 'redo' sharpe, can't say I was a big fan of series but with more money into it it could be spot on.

I guess its a good job it wasn't directed by Mel Gibson!:D

Actually it wasn't too bad, but I remember seeing the Waterloo episode and thinking how poorly done it was, sorry guys:eek:;)

Rob....

Their first shot at WWII was brilliant the pacific for me, was a bit of a dissapointment over the whole series. I think they would look at WW1 and, sadly, give it a wide berth.

Its a shame that our film heritage in the UK has gone to the dogs as, when it was an original idea to do a film on the bomber command and, the raids over germany etc the money men made the idea change and we got memphis belle. Which, IMO only was a dire film.

Maybe, HBO may look at African theatre which, would be interesting

I can recommend "The Crossing", M'Lud, starring Jeff Daniels as George Washington. It's based on a historical novel about Washington's Crossing, so some of the dialog is fictional, but in the main, it's accurate and a good movie. But otherwise, I agree with you. While I've come to enjoy "The Patriot", it's hard, because of the inaccuracies.

Prost!
Brad

Thanks Brad I do own that one cheers and I do really like it, also got Benedict Arnold (Aiden Quinn), Revolution (Al Pacino) and the John Adams miniseries.
The Patriot has by the far the best battle sequences and the biggest budget and I do still have a soft spot for it despite the inaccuracies! :)

I'm with you mike, another french and indian war movie is due, i like your recommendations, but I'll add a movie that follows edward braddock up to his defeat, with a full scale battle, the documentaries of this just doesn't do it for me.

Blake...

that would be cool...

there was a thread a while back on this...

I wanted Anthony Hopkins to play Braddock...

got to be really distinguished and arrogant...

lets start writing a script...:D

No need to apologise. I really enjoyed the Sharpe series, but anyone who knows even a modicum about Waterloo would have been shaking their heads, wincing, and groaning throughout that episode.

I wish someone would make a movie about the Norman Invasion in 1066. You would have two big battle scenes for Stanford Bridge and Hastings so there would be plenty of dramatic scope. I like Ian McShane as King Harold.

And Directed by Ridley Scott

Hi Guys,
This thread is a bit of a co-incidence as only two days ago I was looking at the list of war movies in connection with something I am going to put on my web page (ie. list of figure eras I stock with relevant movies noted).

I Googled and got http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_war_films_and_TV_specials

Going through the list the two areas I thought a movie was due were :
WWII North Africa - I thing a movie about SAS/LRDG would be good.
and French Indian War.

In relation to a Long Tan movie about 4 years ago Director Bruce Beresford was linked to a production based on the book Long Tan by the Commanders. I have spoken to or exchanged emails with three of the Commanders as well as other ranks over the years. I have been told by an Army source that the Defence Dept did not approve the script and that without that the Army would not assist the production. It is my understanding the script is a problem as all the main participants are still alive and there are different views that might be hard to resolve. As Howard mentioned the Australian War Memorial shows a mini documentary and I found that in itself to be interesting for the parts which were not covered. I would doubt the movie will be made any time soon.

Brett

Mentioned it earlier but, a good Desert film is a must IMO

Anthony Hopkins?!!!! Holy crap, you're right, he would make an excellent Braddock!!! I was racking my brian trying to think of someone, the only person that popped to mind was the guy who played Munro in Last of the Mohicans, Maurice Roeves or something like that. Great choice :)
Now, I've give you another: who would play Washington, Orme? Or even Gage and Halkett/s? Probably a bunch of other character too, in the mean time I'm going to look for that old post.

A movie on the Battle of Monongahela would be great but I don't think the fan base would be very large. You would be surprised (not really) how few people know about this war, even though LOTM was popular. The raid on St.Francis could be more in tune with a movie but in these PC times there would be too much bullcrap about it.
Mark

He gets it back with "Shock and Awe" Trebuchets in Kingdom of Heaven.

I don't know...there are some pretty accurate accounts recorded on this battle...I agree...it's pretty well unknown...I don't even think that most of the people that know of it...realize that if Braddock had successfully sieged Fort Duquesne...there probably would not have been a 7 Years War...it was a bungled operation that's purpose was to quell the French expansion in the North Americas...I think most experts agree...that if Duquesne fell...the alliances of the French and Indians would never had gelled and history would have changed dramatically...with the large success of Last of the Mohicans...I think this would be well accepted by the public...

Snow Shoes was less documented...different accounts by different sides...varied exaggerated stories or truths of slaughter...survival...cannibalism...

but I think either one could be done well...one of the things I always liked about Jenkin's...is that he has always chosen these small, obscure battles...Snow Shoes...St. Francis...Monongahela...even Chippewa by European standards...these are all great stories to tell...

the myth of Robert Rogers (St. Francis and Snow Shoes)...from what I have read...he never won a battle...

Braddock's Defeat...maybe the most bungled military maneuver in history...

Chippewa...the birth of the US Army...the first time the US held it's own against an experienced Napoleonic army...

Jacobites...the genocide or ethnic cleansing of Scottish clans..."No Quarter"...was the order of the day...

all of these would make great movies...I know I would watch them...

Historical movies just don't do that well on the whole anymore.Even the fabled western doesn't do that well. This is the age of comic book movie. You know I would love to see the movies you suggested.Every one of them.:)

Indeed but I am content to seperate my knowledge of history from my enjoyment of movies about history. The first is about facts, the second more about entertainment. Frankly, I don't feel as much of a need to have the history in movies so accurate but appreciate whatever they do that is. If juicing up the script with a ficticious love story or fanciful hero and battle detail or so fills the seats and makes the movie about a period I enjoy possible, I can live with that.;)
