What else do you collect beside toy soldiers (1 Viewer)

Re: What else you collect, beside toy soldiers

I've gotten the millitaria from Antique shops, on line, heck, some of it was given to me by people who heard about my interest in military history and the pro bono work I do for veterans (including the Flyong Tiger jacket patch, the Katana, the 3 Japanese WWII bayonets and the Lee Enfield rifle).

Re: What else you collect, beside toy soldiers

I like books
I have perhaps arround 5000 books in my library, but that is because I like reading books, and sometime anong them I have some real gem : first edition, limited edition, uncut paper, on special heavy paper,
like this one Dali limited 1000 ex, signed by Dali, cover is copper that can be retrieved and exposed separately, 80cm high, multiple drawings all numbered and signed, Dali and his horses drawings
dali.JPG
I have also a book/box with perspex glass as cover, 300 ex, of Paul Delvaux, numbered and signed , containing among other things, a reproduction of a Delvaux painting on canva, like a puzle made of A2 sized parts
But as I said; for reading
Is this a collection ?

I do not collect ,but operate O scale trains. Been working on a layout for about a 100 years, but buy just enough engines and rolling stock to run, not sit on a shelf...Michael

Mirof,

That is a fascinating collection, spanning both books and art. I also collect a bit of fine art, from Renaissance Maiolica pottery by Dominico Grue, the master of Castelli, to oil paintings and artist proofs from my good friend Jorge Tacla, but that book signed my Salvatore Dali is truly magnificent! Thank you for sharing your wonderful collection!

Re: What else you collect, beside toy soldiers

I'd love to see some photos of your layout, Michael.

Re: What else you collect, beside toy soldiers

Just added an amazing piece to my collection: a 79th New York Highland Volunteers engraved NCO's sword with the name of the regiment and the recipient, John S. MacGilliaran, Jr., engraved on the blade! Photos to follow upon receipt.

Too much I am told !!

I also have a model railway and I also collect 1:32 farm animals, tractors, implements made by Britains. I also breed birds (parakeets, Gouldian finches, Diamond doves and Zebra finches)

Wonder how I find time to go to work ^&grin

Re: What else you collect, beside toy soldiers

Some more caps, rifles and bladed weapons:

Very jealous of the Scots/Highland stuff. Would love to collect some of that. I guess I sort of do since I have bought things for my Highland dress outfit.

The highland stuff is definitely my favorite as well. That's why, for the Civil War, I am so fascinated with the 79th New York (Highland Guard).

If you look in the photograph with the hats on the white built in piece of furniture, there are the heads of two Lochaber Pole Axes, one of which is old enough to have been at Prestonpans or Culloden (pre-1745). I have always wanted either a basket-hilted broadsword or a dirk old enough to have been at Culloden. My broadsword is 80 (1828) and my dirk is 150 (1899) years too young.

Oh wow, I had not seen those. That is really amazing.

Here are some shots of (1) my New York Militia table, with the 79th New York Highland Guard belt buckle, and (2) my favorite glossy diorama, a North West Frontier Relief of the Siege of Chitral set up, originally designed and executed by Gordon Neilson, with a K&C wood and papier mache fort, glossy K&C khaki coated Seaforth Highlanders, Early Glossy Cavalry (including New South Wales lancers, 16th Lancers and the original, un-designated British Lancers), K&C Frontier Field Force Royal Artillery and Indian Army field gun and maxim gun teams, Indian Army Camel Corps, Guards Camel Corps (with Maxim Gun Team) Sikhs (with Maxim Gun team), Kings African Rifles, Egyptian Infantry and 91st Highland Light Infantry (marching in tartan trews) against K&C Afghans and Boxer Rebellion chinese (with dragon gun). Also on this diorama are several Trophy and Heco Tinplate Model sets, and a Red Box special edition set of the Queens Corps of Guides from the miniseries "The Far Pavilions." There is also a real 19th Century photograph of a Gordon Highlander Sergeant in full dress, and a club figure of Gordon Neilson as a Highlander.

Re: What else you collect, beside toy soldiers

One last set for tonight, and this time I mean it! (1) a K&C Secret Desert Axis Airfield diorama (I asked Andy and Gordon to make me North African Axis Airfield for the relaunch of the SAS and Long Range Desert Group Series, kind of a Barci Raid set up, and they, being funnier than I, made the **** airfield from the City of Tanis in Raiders of the Lost Ark - in the back there is a block of stone removed with a hole to the inside ["Snakes, why did it have to be snakes"]), the LRDG and SAS vehicles across the top are prototypes, gifts from Andy; (2) Afrika Corps Diorama made for the Launch of the Original Afrika Corps series, with all of the original Afrika Corps figures, and some rarest of the rare one of a kind (desert Panzer IV Short Barrel), prototype (8th Army Staff Car), and extremely limited production resin vehicles (Resin and Metal, not wood and metal, desert Hanomag, one of 3-5 produced); (3) prototype desert modular bases K&C never put in production, with extremely rare and prototype desert vehicles, including prototype resin and metal (not polystone) desert troop transport lorry, wood and metal desert Quad Gun and Limber (approximately 5 made), wood and metal desert Bren Gun Carrier (approximately 3-5 made) and original resin and metal and metal LRDG 30 cwt Chevy Pickup and SAS desert jeep; (4) custom K&C Oasis diorama made by Gordon Neilson, a gift from Andy at a NY Symposium, with one of a kind master painted 8th Army Desert Priest self propelled gun - by the way, the stain glass window behind the diorama in the photo is a Civil War era window with the regimental insignia of the 71st New York Volunteer Regiment from the Regimental Armory in NYC; and (5) K&C Capture of Osama Bin Laden diorama made for German Toy Show, with prototype metal SAS Land Rover and entire Iraq/Afghan series releases on it:
