In 1909, Teddy Roosevelt went on Safari in Africa to obtain specimens for the Smithsonian Museum. In 1909 and 1910, Schoenhut, a Philadelphia based toy company, produced "Adventures in Africa," a set commemorating the expedition, making wood and cloth dolls, animals and accessories of Roosevelt, his son Kermit, his follow hunters, native bearers, their tents, equipment, camp furnishings, etc. Usually, the toys, especially Roosevelt, sell for thousands of dollars, but I found this Teddy Roosevelt, with his ammunition belt, binoculars, rifle and pith helmet on ebay with an affordable (less than $500) buy-it-now. I contacted the seller, and was able to obtain a native bearer and Roosevelt's horse from the set (photos upon their arrival).
