Any ships in the USN you have not been on Bosun ?....that is an impressive list and a fine service record...regards TomB

A very good cure for sea sickness...but I would not recommend it......funny thing.......the manly Ferry in Sydney could have some rough trips....crossing the Heads (entrance to Sydney Harbor)...in the winter.....I had the bejesus scared outta me on one trip when I a kid....regards TomB....PS...that pic of the Manly ferry is the South Stern ...built in Scotand in the early 1900's I think and sailed to Aust....the seaworthiness of the ferry was never a doubt...it was just chicken me who thought it was going to turned into a submarine.
Tom,
Yeah some of the most seemingly unlikely coastal areas can have some terribles seas. I was on a ferry that was delayed in Liverpool once due to a particularly bad one. Apparently the poor folk on the previous boat had to spend the night rolling and bobbing off the Irish coast because the sea was too bad to make port. Bet there was a mess to clean up on that one.

There can be some rough weather on the English coast..,,,would not be my choice of a ferry trip...regards TomB

Spent some time at the helm of one like this. It is amazing how fast an 8 knot tack can feel.

That is a beautiful picture....I have never been on anything like that..only powered boats/Ships..I reckon it would be terrific....regards TomB

I "rode" the USS Iowa, a WWII BB, thru the Panama Canal in '83. Pretty interesting going thru the locks, for an Air Force guy. Chris

The only ships I've travelled on was an Ocean Liner when I was 5 years old (can't remember the name) from New York to Maricaibo, Venezuela. I've also been on a Hydrofoil Ferry from Denmark to Norway, and on a yacht cruising the Greek Isles. The only warship that I stayed on (not travelled on) was the Battleship USS Massachusettes (as a Scout Master with my Boy Scout Troop; a sleepover on the ship, which included a visit on a WWII Submarine and to the adjoining Maritime Museum). I am not counting outings on row boats, fishing boats, whale watches, and power boats.

The Hydrofoil from Denmark to Norway is something I would love to do.....would like also to see the WW2 submarine.....have had a tour on a Brit Sub....no way I would ever be a sailor on a sub.....half your luck on the yacht cruising, that would have been the ants pants...regards TomB

Mostly small boats but I did go on a Caribbean cruise on one of the Norwegian line floating buses.

The troopship USS Darby (of World War II Darby's Rangers fame) from Bremerhaven, Germany to the Brooklyn Naval Yard in June 1964 for about 11 days. There were several thousand of us on this troop ship assigned to several holds. About 400 of us we jammed into a windowless forward hold with canvas and metal pipe beds stacked about five of six high, head to toe, and side by side with other GIs. You couldn't sleep on your side without your shoulder touching the bunk above you. The food was also the worst I ever had in the in three years I served on active duty in the Army. I have refused to board any ocean going ship since.

Only one sea cruise for me, USNS General Pope.
2,000 Marines floating for 15-days from San Diego to
Okinawa and Vietnam during the summer of 1967.

Would not call that a pleasure cruise...Nam was busy in 67...regards TomB

Cool thread!
Thank you to all who served on board ships- we can all enjoy the freedom of sailing thanks to your hard work.

On another note, my favorite ship that I have sailed on was the Clearwater, a Hudson River sloop. I volunteered on her for around a month.

I remember when the Clearwater came into Rockport Harbor. My father was harbormaster at the time and pronounced the vessel as sloppy and full of "hippies." I don't think my father was aware of who Pete Seeger is.

Scott- when did the Clearwater visit? My mother was boatswain from 77-79 (she was a hippie{sm4})! It's no longer "hippies" per se, but more of tall ship fanatics.

Wow! It had to be early 70s. My father got more open minded as he got older.
