What the SCALE is going on? (4 Viewers)

I don't know why but somehow when I hear the words "What the Scale is going on?", I think of the Stones' classic Mother's Little Helper. So without further ado, here's my version. Apologies to Mick and Keith. The real words follow :D

What a drag it is getting bad scale
"Collectors are different today"
I hear ev'ry manufacturer say
Collectors needs something today to calm them down
And though they're not really ill
There's a little yellow pill
They go running for the shelter of a collector's little helper
And it helps them on their way, gets them through their busy day

"Things are different today"
I hear ev'ry manufacturer say
Buying out of scale AFV's just a drag
So they buy another AFV
And goes running for the shelter of a collector's little helper
And it helps them on their way, getting them through their busy day

Doctor please, some more of these
Outside the door, he took four more
What a drag it is getting bad scale

"Collectors just aren't the same today"
I hear ev'ry manufacturer say
They just don't appreciate that you make so much
They're so hard to satisfy, You can tranquilize your mind
So go running for the shelter of a collector's little helper
And four help you through the night, help to minimize your plight

Doctor please, some more of these
Outside the door, he took four more
What a drag it is getting bad scale

"Life's just much too hard today,"
I hear ev'ry manufacturer say
The pursuit of scale happiness just seems a bore
And if you take more of those, you will get an overdose
No more running for the shelter of a collector's little helper
They just helped you on your way, through your busy collecting day.

The real lyrics:

What a drag it is getting old
"Kids are different today"
I hear ev'ry mother say
Mother needs something today to calm her down
And though she's not really ill
There's a little yellow pill
She goes running for the shelter of a mother's little helper
And it helps her on her way, gets her through her busy day

"Things are different today"
I hear ev'ry mother say
Cooking fresh food for a husband's just a drag
So she buys an instant cake and she burns her frozen steak
And goes running for the shelter of a mother's little helper
And two help her on her way, get her through her busy day

Doctor please, some more of these
Outside the door, she took four more
What a drag it is getting old

"Men just aren't the same today"
I hear ev'ry mother say
They just don't appreciate that you get tired
They're so hard to satisfy, You can tranquilize your mind
So go running for the shelter of a mother's little helper
And four help you through the night, help to minimize your plight

Doctor please, some more of these

Must say that it seems hard to please some folks as the detail on CS stuff is really good wheel bases are excellent and deck detail is really good have not come across any paint schemes yet that have made me think that is wrong tones are well done so, IMO cannot see what the problems are with a few mills here or there.

I have not measured any of my AFV's as I am more leaning towards detail on the vehicle in question No complaints from me about quality

I also buy what I like. I am not an acolyte of any one manufacturer and am not a real rivet counter. I accept the fact that figures that come from different makers are going to be different in size (height, girth, bulkiness) because of "interpretation", even if they are same scale. I mix them without hesitation. Vehicles are another matter. Any certain vehicle has known dimensions that should transfer to scale, without interpretation (allowing for such things as shrinkage), to a given size. Not being a strict rivet counter, I can mix vehicles that come within a few millis of being correct, but they must "look" right in context. No undersize Tigers or Panthers. They must look correct in relation to my other vehicles. My real complaints have been overscale figures when compared to vehicles. Tigers and Panthers were huge and having figures that are too big diminishes the size effect that these vehicles should impart. Any quick study of wartime photos will show the overall size of a Tiger or Panther when compared to their crews, which shows that many of the figures made today are still oversized when compared to the vehicles. Mine is an aesthetic complaint more than anything else. -- Al

Well said. Much clearer than my posts. I completely agree.

I think you got a point about CS Tank crew as the ones on the Tiger tank look well over top but that the only thing wrong with them

From someone who has been hard on you recently, I appreciate the offer. You will have them at the prices quoted. Tell me where you want them sent. I will see about actual shipping cost and can send you a totaled Paypal request. Just so you know, I own and love your Tiger, Autoblinda car, and your Panther. ( I did get that one repainted:eek: )as well as your Arheim German car. I wanted you to know that. There are often too many complaints going around by folks who never have bought your stuff. I am not one of those ..Michael

Alex P. did my Panther, but I am waiting for it to ship back. This is a prelim photo before some more weathering is applied. Personally, on the Panzer 4, I would have preferred the skirts to be pegged in place ( still removable )If I had kept the Panzer, I would have used narrow dowels, glued them to the inside of the skirts and then drill corresponding holes between the track wheels. The struts would then be more a decorative effect. As is they will hang on the tank, but not securely..Michael

Looks like another A effort from Alex. Looks like you'll be pretty happy when you get it back.

That is one great looking Panther. I want one now.

Thank for posting Michael I would like CS do a Panther in a ambush camo next , agree fitting the side skirts is a nightmare on the panzer 4

I received mine today, and I love it. If you put these so-called 1:30 scale figures to the tape, you'll find they are closer to 70mm than 60mm. So, the tank seems to fit well with my K&C minis. I must say, I think this one is well done. ;) Jürgen

First, yes we are burdoned with multiple Shermans in what appear to be different scales for each release. I know that Andy has said that he will often use a plasic model as inspiration, but then we are subject to the master scupltor's "interpretation" of of the model. Brian at CS says his model is the correct scale, but there is an error on the turret MG mount that he stated was from looking at photos. How can you claim correct scale without refering to scale drawings, US Army Ordnance drawings, or mearuring the real thing? Even 1/35th models get nitpicked on small measurement errors. I would be interested to hear CS's references for the size.

For a visual reference, remember that an M4A3E8 has the wider suspension. The 23-inch tracks had fenders fitted, and there was a stowage rack ("luggage rack" in te manual) on the rear of the upper hull. Both o thesecan make an Easy Eight look larger than its predecessors.

The middle vehicle with the 75mm gun is not K7C, it appears to be one of the 1/30 scale remote control tanks. Note the unusual tracks that don't resemble any tracks used on an M4-seroes (although I may be wrong - a larger photo would help).

As to "the big GM" engine. Shermans are primarily differentiated based on engine. All M4A3s had Ford 500hp model GAA V-8 engines. The only Shermans that got larger LOWER hulls were the M4A4 (Chrsler A57 Multibank) and M4A6 (Caterpillar diesels). Most Sherman upper hulls were very close in size. All had a 69-inch diameter turret ring.

Color: It appears that CS is actually closest to US OD, but when new that color was fairly dark. For a "collector model" the "corrrect" color may be too dark.

So, either display it by itself in its own scene, or mix it and don't let it bother you.

Well stated. I buy what 'pulls my trigger' from a variety of companies and accept that the various makers will be different in their scale interpretation and level of detail...and that these are toys.
But then, I don't count rivets. If I did, I'd probably have to build from scale kits or scratch build-or break a bunch of rulers...;)
mike

You took the words right out of my mouth, Mike:p. I couldn't agree more.
