My Lock-down 2020 Additions and Adjustments 2 Pfalz DVIII

The first of my new Lock-down creations the rare Pfalz DVIII created largely from cannibalized parts from some Tin Toys purchases and various bits of metal. As it was designed to use the same rotary engine the plane at first glance resembles the SSW DIII but has the double struts of the SPAD fighters as favoured by Pfalz in 1918 and a rounded tail.

I believe that Jasta 14 was fully equipped with the DVIII in the summer of 1918. if so then the minor Saxon ace Richard Rothe (the figure is also new)probably flew the type although the markings are at best conjectural.

My Lock-down 2020 Additions and Adjustments 3 Not another Albatros but a Roland DVIb

The second new creation made when I found out Jasta 3 was partially equipped with the Roland DVIb at the end of 1918. Although it looks like an Albatros just look how the lower wings were attached. I decided that as a 9 victory ace and Jasta Fuhrer Georg Weiner probably had both a DVI and a Fokker DVII.

My Lock-down 2020 Additions and Adjustments 4 Repainted Pfalz DXII and new Kopka

Finally, as I had now allocated Georg Weiner my new Roland DVIb I reallocated his converted Heco Pfalz DXII which originally appeared in the Heco Thread post 1352 to another minor Saxon ace Johann Kopka. A Pole whose family moved to Saxony prior to the War unfortunately although he originally served in the Saxon Army much is known about him or the markings of the planes he flew. He served with Jasta 41 and in August 1918 the unit was fully equipped with the DXII before receiving Fokker DVIIs in September. The markings are based on those known to have been used by Jasta 41 on their earlier Pfalz and Albatros fighters, whilst the figure is based on one of two unidentified pilots in a photo of the Jasta. The beauty of doing your own planes and figures is that when new info turns up you simply repaint or change the figure.

Lastly although hand painting the lozenge camouflage on the wings is to say the least a 'labour of love' the finished result when matched up with the Aluminium dope used on the Pfalz fuselages really is worth the effort. So to finish here is a lineup of all three 1918 Pfalz planes now in the collection. Hope you like it.

A most impressive lineup of Pfalz aircraft types. I've always been fond of the D-III's (a) and the D-XII's. Really admire your ability to recreate the lozenge camo by hand-painting. Beautiful jobs.:salute:: -- Al

With the help of good friend Tom Dubel, who passed it along to me at his cost, I just purchased this wonderful Heco Tinplate Models RFC Airplane Hanger I have wanted for about 20 years:

That reminds me that I have about 8 of theses figures, kits still in boxes, that need a 'lick of paint' ....

I hope to get around to them very soon??

Inspired by Tom Dubel's recent acquisition of a huge custom Toy Army Workshop WW1 diorama, and the photos of smaller TAW trench dioramas posted on his thread, I picked up this wonderful Gordon Highlanders "Over the Top" trench diorama:

Very nice. We have that set. Isn't it Tommy Atkins? Same difference anyway I guess. Great drama with its own scenery.
Best Wishes

Let me acknowledge the fact that I managed to take a picture in which absolutely nothing is in focus:redface2:

I have completed the painting on 3 of the 75mm Hinchliffe kits that I have in my stash of castings ....

3hinch75s.jpg

They are #75/2 Grenadier, #75/4 Chef de Battalion & #75/1 Fusilier Tambour.

The officer looks much thinner than his soldier, and the drummer looks like he enjoys his food !!!

I think I have another 4 kits to assemble and paint, and will show them off soon.
By the way, I have found that I have doubled up on one of the other kits, so may try a different paint scheme, like Swiss ??

John
