What Toy Soldier items Have You Acquired in The Last 2 Weeks ? (5 Viewers)

Just got couple more of the big planes. They are very nice for the money ( I wish I found out about them 10 years ago :mad: )
By the way my big F14 & F18 are coming too {sm4}

Nice! Are those 21st Century Toys' 1/18th planes? I agree, they are great deals, and you can find good bargains on eBay or at shows. I've got a pair of Thunderbolts, but I'm on the prowl for the USN aircraft, and a P-40.

Prost!

Thanks. Yes they are all 21st Century toys' 1:18 planes. I've been looking for a Navy Hellcat & Flying Tiger P40 for quite a while now. These two are usually go for high money on ebay especially the Hellcat.

Here are my latest, over the past couple of weeks.

I mentioned in an earlier post that I had found a collection of King-White/Reeves figures going up for auction on eBay, and it turned out that the collection was the leftover stock from a hobby shop here in town, that is closing. I picked up around 50 figures, 22 of them GIs from what I believe was the "Historical Heroes" section of the King-White catalog:

then figures from the Civil War series, the Indian Wars (US, 1870s), Revolutionary War, US Marine Corps, Mexican War, Ancient and portrait figures:

I picked up these samurai figures by Ed Colarik, from Matt Murphy of Hobby Bunker at the PA Toy Soldier Show in Levittown:

1_Colarik_Samurai.jpg

I already have a small collection of the Colarik samurai, some generals and officers, archers, banner-bearers and musketeers. v I also have one of the sets of conquered enemies' heads on a bench. So when I saw these in a collection of miscellaneous figures, I had to snap them up.

I used to think that these figures were designed here but molded, cast and painted in China, because of their similarity to King-White. But I was looking through some catalog and promotional material that I have for these figures, and I'm not so sure. They were marketed by International Marketing Consultants, in LA back in the 80's, but today, they're in Dallas. I found Ed Colarik's website: http://www.artbyec.com/ and I'm going to see if I can contact him for more info.

This was an interesting find, a collection of die-cast ships from an Argentine maker as yet unknown to me:

ArgentineTaskGroup1.jpg

ArgentSub_1.jpg

The carrier is about 4" long. It has a hollow underside, marked with "Industria Argentina", as do the next 2 ships in size. The smallest ship and the submarine have solid undersides, with no markings, and may be of different manufacture. They are similar to Tootsietoy die-casts, but the carrier is much nicer than any of the Tootsietoy castings. In any case, they caught my eye, and I was able to win each auction without any competition.

My most exciting find coming up in the next post...

And here is what I consider a coup for my collection, a group of figures depicting an 18th century salon concert:

Duffy_4.jpg

These figures were made by a gentleman on Long Island named Thomas Duffy, back in the early 60s, according to Garratt. Also according to Garratt, the set is intended to depict a concert at the court of Frederick the Great. Garratt mentions receiving a catalog sheet, but that Duffy never responded to any request for more info.

Years ago, I had received the flute and guitar players, and began tracking down their origin. The flute player's chair is cast solid, and inscribed with "TED" underneath. I eventually found the article in Garratt's encyclopedia, but it wasn't until about 9 years ago, that I saw a picture of the set, on eBay. I wasn't able to win that auction, and I never saw the figures again, until this past weekend, on eBay. The seller misidentified them as Staddens, and it was that search that returned them. I was able to win all of them, for what I think is a very reasonable price. I thought about getting molds made, but I want even more to paint them and build a diorama box for them. Though they are simple, they have a sort of elegant charm about them. It'll take just a little clean-up--the one gentleman needs a base, and the guitar is missing its headstock--but I am very pleased to have found these. I'm still looking for any other info about Duffy's figures, any catalogs or other images. I think that there may be more figures to the set, perhaps seated. I also have a seated figure of Frederick himself, by Duffy, but in about 75mm, so I'll continue to look.

Brad,

Those figures are a very nice find and they should paint up a treat. I've got to ask though with figures that rare is there a tendency to preserve them as they are? Those castings look very clean.

Enjoy them regardless.

Thanks, Scott! I've considered that, too, especially in connection with using them as masters for molds. But there are some technical difficulties on that side of the equation. The figures appear to cast as a single piece, and in the case of the harpsichord, the seat back is soldered to the young lady casting, and the gentleman leaning in is soldered to the harpsichord. I'm leery of trying to disassemble those pieces.

Picking these up, though, has inspired me and I'm thinking of putting the questions about Duffy out to some of the old-timers in the hobby, Art Etchells in our club, for example (he gave me my original Duffy figures) and maybe Jim Hillestad.

I'd really like to have them painted for my Christmas display, but I don't think I'll finish in time.

Prost!

wow, very nice acquisition. The G.I. figures look pretty good !

For the benefit of the 45 other curmudgeons, like myself, who still collect vintage Wm. Britains Toy Soldiers (according to the poll conducted on this forum) I would like to mention a recent acquisition. Was recently successful with an auction bid (Not e-Bay!!) on an uncatalogued set, near-mint, with tie card in the original box of Set No. 1913 The Cameronians, marching at the slope with officer. For those who might be interested in more detail see; http://arnhemjim.blogspot.com/2012/11/another-set-of-w-britains-toy-soldiers.html. Have attached a small picture of the set below.

Arnhem Jim

Christmas buying today = both the new CS Roman sets. So now I've got someone new for my chariot to run down! I think I've got 20 of this range now. I'm really looking forward to when I move into the new house early next year and I can finally set them all up and take some photos.

Martyn: Great display and collection. Len made six special commission 24 figure sets of the Indian regiments. They have been sold but have no bayonets at the request of the owner. You might be on the lookout for them and hopefully the sets have not been broken up to sell. By the way, if this is a "few", it would be interesting to see a photo of what you consider a "bunch". Best regards, Tommy

Many thanks Tommy :salute::
