I thought I would start this thread and see if there are others who feel like I do.

Do you ever lose interest in a King & Country range ? Decide to change collecting paths ?

I have found myself losing interest in hanging on to my Romans and Barbarians (which I am selling off on Ebay). Since Andy has stop producing the figures in the range and more & more & more - new interesting K&C ranges are coming out - I decided to punt.

Space also has become a concern - I mean I simply can't fit another Curio Cabinet in my townhouse or office - I already have NINE !

With all things new ranges and cool things being released by K&C - my older figures are starting to be re-examined for a trip to Ebay. I can't hang on to everything I have and then add all these new wants on top of that !

I refuse to buy something to put on the shelf in the box and not display it - I did that before on few items and think ing I would display it later - then never do.

What about you guys ?

I may start dabbling in Naps - just a few key pieces. I do feel the need for a change of pace.
And the same for Sons of the Empire if there are combat poses - again just a few key pieces of each type plus tents, gun crews, etc. No intention to collect duplicates to make a battle line or square. And this would require culling down my WW2 stuff to favourites to make room and pay for the Naps and Sons.

I know the feeling. I originally collected most of the WWII lines, but when space and keeping up with so many good releases became an issue I sold off everything to concentrate only on German winter and early war stuff.

At this point, I don't sell anything. I feel that I'd regret it later if I did. I started collecting plastics then Civil War...all in the closet now. I have Conte WWII, because in the early days KC WWII hardly had any combat poses. Its kind of fun to dig them out of the closet when you haven't seen them in years. Today, 95% of my buying is KC WWII. I questioned quitting when the figure prices went up to $25, $29, $32 per figure and AFVs went skyward of $150+. I eventually got over the price shock and now spend more than ever. I've run out of my room in this hutch I keep my collection in and my stuff is spilling over everywhere. My next possible purchase to create more space problems are the desert Chevy truck, classic Sherman, the new Panzer III and the latest from TGM.

Good thread Capitolron. Yes I can see how one might tire of collecting say NAPOLEONICS especially the French. I mean there is only so long one can rout for the losing side. To be surrounded by hundreds of miniatures that constantly remind one of humiliating, complete and utter defeat would be depressing really, what's the fun in that! :D

In all seriousness space is a big concern and I agree with all the wonderful new lines coming out display space is at a premium for most collectors. I can see trimming away pieces from a line to make room for the new interests however I could never sell out an entire line. I'd keep at least a few key pieces that I like as a sample from that era. For example I only have RO39 Mounted Julius Caesar and RO16 Standing Centurion in the Roman line and I'm content with that.

I briefly became bored with collecting WW2, then starting collecting the American Revolution (AR) figures after having seen someone purchase one of the drummers at KingsX. After purchasing about 10 figures in the AR range, I went right back to WW2. And now, I regret purchasing the 10 AR figures, thinking what WW2 figures I could have purchased with that money. Every now and then, I purchase a Napoleonic figure, thinking that some day I'll explore that range more fully.

Dear Ron / "Capitolron":
Since I started collecting back in 1991 there was one rule I never broke. "If I could not display a set of toy soldiers I did not buy them until I disposed of others if need be to make room for more wanted sets". I think that this is a good rule to keep. There is nothing wrong with selling as well as buying toy soldiers, it does not have to be a "one way street" so to say. Also, one can generally make enough money on retired K&C sets to more than pay for new ones coming out currently.

I think you meant "root," but that's a pretty good Freudian Slip. Bet Blucher thought the same.

I can't say I get bored with my pieces. They are mostly Naps, but every now and then I just can't resist a spectacular piece. I'd love to collect Zulu and CW, but then I would have to divide my forces. If I learned one thing from Napoleon...

I do look at some of my very early purchases...not particularly valuable or well crafted. It is probably time to let some go, but it is difficult after so long...and if I am ever to complete the Waterloo diorama, I still have a couple hundred thousand to cast, paint, and collect  (Side note...the frontage of my property is approximately the same width of the Waterloo battlefront in 54mm...scary when I look at it!)

There's absolutely nothing wrong with recycling your collection, in-fact its how I got introduced to K&C figures.:D

In my early collecting days (early 90's) I stuck to plastics in an effort to relive my childhood and purchase figures etc I simply couldn't afford as a lad.

Collecting plastics was also kinder on the pocket, however it wasn't long before I discovered gloss metal figures and a passion for metal was born.

Subsequently over the next few years I've used the sale of my plastics collection to purchase metal Britains, Conte and eventually K&C.;);)

I never thought I'd ever be able to afford K&C figures, but by recycling and being a bit creative I've managed to pick up some fantastic K&C sets.

Don't get me wrong I've never liked selling stuff off, but at the end of the day I've managed to pick up figures that I truly enjoy and they are all on display.

If you're getting bored with your old sets then go for it and give them the flick and let someone else enjoy them. You won't regret it, I certainly never have.;):p

Cheers Toddy

Gollum does not sell his precious.
Gollum wants more and more.
Gollum doesn't mind if they stay in boxes.

I think this is a good rule and I am in agreement with Ron. I hate keeping stuff in boxes and have been selling off what I have in the closet. I just don't see the point. What gives pleasures are looking at your displays.

Fully agree.I can't stand to have things in boxes myself, theres nothing like looking at your display all on show together.

I agree also, although until I get properly settled in the new house some of my stuff is still in boxes. I did get my Zulu figures unpacked though :D :D :D

The one exception to my rule lately has been when I find a "hard to find" diorama piece - I have bought them and put them on the self - knowing one day they will be used.

I have found those diorama pieces are very hard to find when they get retired.

Very good point. I have some set aside for future use. Some of the pieces like the French farmhouse and even the Normandy village can be used with more than 1 range of figures.

It is interesting the decisions you have to make now - not too long ago we didn't have that many periods of history to choose from when buy Toy Soldiers. :)

Ron,do you mean you now choose between Waterloo morning,Waterloo lunchtime or Waterloo about teatime-ish;):D

My main interest is WW2,but i have a general interest in all periods of history ,so to encapsulate this interest i select a small number of figures and create what i term as " A SCENE",it will usually consist of 4 or 5 figures, that capture a moment in time /scene from a battle,in doing this it allows me to spread my interest as well as still concentrating on WW2.Of course "A SCENE" can be made up with as many figures as one chooses but that can become costly, the idea is to spread the interest and the cost across many ranges. ken
