Great action film, helped enormously by the actual winter location shooting. Still love the opening credit shots of the very effectively camoed JU-52. ^&cool -- Al

Great film, but long. I often find myself dozing off, even though there's not a boring moment. Lots of fun to follow the plot twists, and yes, lots of action.

Prost!

About a 2 1/2 hour movie. I prefer these than the 90 minute quickie types.

When I grow up I want to be able to shoot two MP40s at once! Plus I want one of those guns that never needs reloading :)

Seriously, though, it's a good movie. Good cast, good plot, great photography.

According to TCM the basis was Richard Burton telling someone that he wanted to be in an "action" mvie. This one had Allistair MacLean writing the movie adaptation first, then writing the novel - the opposite of all his other stories that have gone to the big screen.

Clinton rules! Who else could hold a fully loaded MP-40 in each hand, fight the recoil, AND hit his target with unerring accuracy? The rest of us are meer mortals. An immensly satisfying moment in movie history. -- Al

This used to be one of the films that was shown around Christmas time when we only had three T.V. channels. Along with The Great Escape and The Sound of Music, so not all good!!^&grin

The Great Escape is a classic, but I prefer Mary Poppins over The Sound of Music. How can you beat the dancing chimney sweeps?^&grin -- Al

Yep! That's back when the underclass was "adoooor-able!" :wink2:

Add to that the exorborant amount of Germans that they shoot in the process, while Richard only gets a grazing hand wound....Still enjoyed it.Part of my WWII DVD
collection.

Great action movie. Saw it at the theater and when I came home there was a segment on tv showing how they made the movie. Scenes of throwing dummies in Kubel wagens, etc. Kind of spoiled the movie a little bit.

The music in the opening soundtrack is probably one of the best ones from a war film of this vintage... next to the opening track from 'The Battle of Britain'!
Odd that they both are the background sound for visuals that prominently feature JU-52s...

The DVD that I have has a segment showing the filming and behind the scenes footage from the time of its release. As Ken mentioned absolutely, great JU-52 background music !

As an ex-radio operator, some of my favourite bits of the movie - are when "Broasword and Dannyboy" have conversations over the radio. The conversations are hilarious - with a complete absence of any proper voice procedure at all. We used to copy them sometimes over the air - though we would pay the price for it later! johnnybach:D

I agree with Ken on the opening track. I used to have it on as background music when commanding my Airfix armies.

Not surprising about the soundtrack, since it was composer Ron Goodwin who wrote them both. His soundtrack work is equivalent to John Williams', in my opinion.

The "Aces High March" (sometimes called "The Luftwaffe March") from "The Battle of Britain" is excellent, it sounds like a German march of the period. I listen to it every morning, before I switch to other playlists or CDs.

Prost!

I couldn't agree more with what everyone has posted so far!!! This is my favorite movie of all time and the music is great too.

I read an interview with Quentin Taratino. He was talking about his movie Inglorious Bastards. He mentioned Where Eagles Dare as an inspiration - but not in a good way. For him the most tense moments in WE'D we're ruined because everyone spoke English, as if the commandos were utterly conversant in perfect German. For anyone who saw IB, there is more than one scene where the language barrier adds to the tension considerably. Personally, I have to agree with QT.

Enjoyable movie although I agree about the shooting scenes where all the Germans are getting mowed down but the hero's only get flesh wounds! The other thing I wince about is the kubel wagens getting trashed although the movie makers probably or should I say hopefully used movie special affects or kubel replicas when they destroyed them. I also thought the German Helicopter was interesting and using it in the movie. I think the Germans developed a helicopter during the war although I don't know much about it or if they used them on the front line. Anyone have any info on them?

That's right. Shooting at a kubelwagon with an mp40 should not make it flip over...{sm3} by the way the movie is playing right now here in the U.S. on the Military channel.
