why are the germans so popular?? (2 Viewers)

Guys...

With the many debates on here and, the release of the new collector named just this I thought I would start the thread that will inevitably come from this magazine.

My take is that german stuff AFV's etc are just more asthetically appealing than allied counterparts. The germans were able to make some astonishing weapons of war in the circumstances (heavy and continuos allied bombing) for me, I grew up building airfix kits then Tamiya and, apart from the spit, Hurri, lancaster and say the Hood all the german stuff including their ships looked really good.

The germans had good AFV's even those I know who don't like german stuff admit that a Panther Tiger Jagdpanther look the business whereas an allied sherman etc just looks rather drab and boring in comparison.

Parade figures always cause controversy but, again, asthetically the germans did it well. Hitler, whatever else is laid at his door, new with others around him the visual effect propaganda had. The mass rallies and night parades were designed to create a feeling of power and invincibility and thats what they did. The uniforms designed and manufactured by many well known german design houses. I can't think of another nations soldiers on parade at that time that looked more asthetically appealing

the germans also did the same thing in the field. They turned grey into an almost fashion statement something which, the allies did not do with the khaki and other colours. The SS used sevaral different camo smockswhich looked good. The germans festoned their uniforms with medals and awards again, something which the allies apart from some russians did not do. I think allied wise only the Paras looked good in their uniforms

Some answer in the alternative and are flabbergasted at how such a regime can be so popular then and, in the years since I think its just partly (there are other reasons) down to the way they looked and what they designed. it was not in the german psyche to make a sherman it had to be a panther or a konigstiger. The important thing is that there are many millions who are attracted to the german war machine from modellors to historians and, everyone else in between means it has to be asthetic appeal for the majority and, not some neo nazi admiration which, is often bandied around as a misunderstanding of those who are inclined to collect and research the germans. Hopefully, as there is more on the subject more will come to light in discussing these points

This is a good summation of why I collect Germans...The visual appeal. Large Tanks, Great parade figures, etc. No idealogical appeal here ! {sm5}

wunderbar!!!lol.

I love how you take it that its something I have discovered. Its in the written print of many a military historian and reynolds was a senior brit officer who has done some serious research on the german SS.

I have spent most of my life researching the germans and the Waffen SS so, when a comment about their plus points say on the battlefield means that I will post what I have found out through primary and secondary sources otherwise its a one sided debate. Its why many many officers and NCO's of the german armed forces were used aby the allies to assist in the cold war... as they were an invaluable asset.

I find a lot of your posts interesting but it seems, where anything shows favour to the germans and diminishes the alleged allied superiority in, almost everything, its seen as a mental issue or, one is smacked on the ignore list. which, is a shame!!!

Back to the ignore list mate.....{sm4}{sm4}

WWII Germany had nicer armour, small arms, uniforms, etc., but the allies had beautiful fighter aircraft. I remember awhile back, two vintage aircraft making an illegal flyby over the beach on Maui, flying close together and low then veering off into the sunset. It was beautiful. I couldn't help think how much fun those pilots were having.

Because they kindly put out some lovely towels on the chairs around the pool last thing at night - and I can have my pick, take a shower - then chuck the rest in the pool.^&grin

Danke mein herrs!

shhh! you know who -{sm2}

uh oh! back to the naughty mat!{sm3}

And Bratwurst...And knockwurst... and volksmarches.....and Rotenburg OdT.......and the beautiful Kriskindlemart every December that we went to when I lived in Nuremburg... and the beautiful bavarian mountains.....and Kick butt Heavy Metal festivals.........and Bavaria...in truth, the least "popular" thing I find about Germany is their WW2 past.

Go Phils!!{sm3}

they were the ultimate villain, their uniforms were designed to look impressive - especially their dress uniforms, there armor and vehicles had a distinctive look to them, their upper level staff cars were Mercedes, Horch and Maybachs - among the most elegant cars ever built. If anything, they were dapper.

Combined with the art deco style of the era and you have some very striking visuals and they understood this.

Compare this to the USA and Britain - seemingly simple and utilitarian as was the Russian stuff.

Then there is the appeal of coldness and efficiency that the Germans seem to exude. I think a lot of people respond to this for some reason. Don't why but they do.

I wonder how many darth vader figures sold as opposed to skywalker. anybody work for Kenner?

I agree! There's something sexual about the Nazis as you see Nazi iconography in some erotica. It's a dominance theme that must appeal to folks that like authority.
As for Star Wars there is a "reenactment" group that portrays the Imperial Storm Troopers, the 501st Legion. From photos of their parades and events, they seem to be popular with the public.

... because we're just nice people!!!

We have a great sence of humor, we're very polite and ... I can think for hours but won't find any negative points about us.

No wonder why everybody loves the Germans {sm4}

I'll tell you what I did like when I was "doing a bit of time" over there Osty-baby.
Going into a Bar-cafe and ordering a few beers ( and snacks too - like bratties).

No scrumming up to the bar and trying to get served by some sullen bloke/barmaid who wouldn't catch your eye - despite you waving a fistful of pound notes at him/her.

No paying in cash - and counting your change - every time.

Instead. Sit down, waiter comes over - "what would you like mein herrs ?" - order - then wait whilst delicious beer was poured - then served in nice small glasses - (we ordered more of the same - every ten minutes please - so he could keep a sensible and regular flow coming ).

No paying up each time - a little tick went on the doily around the foot of your glass!

Settling up when you have finished - whenever you like - no "LAST ORDERS PLEASE" - or "HAVEN'T YOU GOT ANY HOMES TO GO TO" bellowed at the top of the voice.

No mein herr - your cafe-bars are very, very civilized - and a joy to have a few beers in, whenever we had a bit of time off.

And yes - you do have a sense of humour - You put up with us!

Danke - and seriously (for a change) it was a very nice experience indeed - which I haven't forgotten. ^&grin johnnybach

Make it three . . . to paraphrase Chris on another thread, my Allied toy soldiers love a target rich environment.:wink2:

Make it four Louis! German Soldiers have been targets for my British and American heroes since I was six years old and they still are today! ^&grin. Allied Soldiers were always my main collecting focus whilst the Germans were there purely as loathsome opposition.

Germans are annoying when they speak English but think in German so that a statement sounds like an angry question. (and visa versa) I had a German born foreman years ago.
