World Cup in Brazil (1 Viewer)

Just my opinion, not meant to rile anyones feathers, but I really would rather watch something on the Food Channel than watch soccer.

Been watching the Mexico/Cameroon game. Decent action, typical low score though. I thought the announcers were good, kept criticizing the ref. I am going to try to get into this WC, but I wish they could figure out a way to get more scoring into the game. -- Al

Then please don't read this thread any further.

Flopping aside, what I do like about soccer is there are no TV timeouts, as in none, it's non stop action divided into two halfs, there aren't 4,367 commercials like in all major US sports, that gets annoying and I tend to channel surf when they go to commercials and then I sometimes miss action as I tune back in too late.

Also, the lack of scoring does not bother me as much because when there is a goal, the fans go bananas and it's a big event as goals are often few and far between, so each goal is an event in itself.......

The strange thing for me is that I can only get into it during the World Cup.

The rest of the time I could care less about the MLS or Real Madrid and/or Fake Madrid etc.

I agree 1000%, the league play does not interest me or the MSL or MLS or LSD or whatever we call professional soccer here in the US, I only pay attention to the World Cup and if they are in it, Italy, Germany, England and the US of A, I really don't care about Lithuania vs Cameroon or whoever..................and I'll watch the final depending on who's in it................

Since Brazil just spent their GNP on building all of these one-use white whale stadiums, maybe they should have built a roof on one or two of them. Did they forget it rains in a country with the world's largest RAIN-forest? -- Al

Looks like Spain may be heading for an early exit. It's one thing to lose, another to get hammered, especially where goal differential can become important in deciding if you make it to the second round.

The same thing happened to France after they won in 98. They didn't make it out of the group stage.

Questions for those with soccer knowledge; Once a team uses it's 3 substitutions, does that team have to play short-handed in the event of an injury? Can a team's goal tender be used as an extra attacker, or pulled for an extra attacker, in a given situation if a team deems it neccesary? Please forgive my ignorance but I really don't know the answer. -- Al

Once you use your three, that's it. If a man goes down, you cannot replace him. You can't take the goalie out and then bring him back like hockey. However, he could be used as an attacker.

Thanks Brad, appreciate the answer. Sorry about Spain. They're embarrassed today but they are too good not to bounce back. -- Al

Fantastic game Holland played well especially Robben, I think Spain will improve and do well

Marca, the Spanish sports daily, was merciless, calling it a humiliation, gifts by Casillas (the keeper) and the defense, and a scandalous affair.

I have never seen Casillas like this; it was incredible to behold. His time as the national keeper may be coming to an end.

Brad, I`m sincerely sorry for Spain... No one could ever imagine that! OK, Holland could win, but this was unbelievable... I`m sorry for the Chileans, Spain will come for an all or nothing game!
Let`s see what the other great match today, England x Italy, has in store for us! I apologize to my English friends, but I`m rooting for Italy.

I'm sure people in Spain will feel differently but if they do not make it through, they've nevertheless had an incredible run: a World Cup and two Euros. No one can complain.

Meanwhile, another of my teams, Uruguay, doesn't look too good. This would be an upset if the score holds.

Flopping has already occurred (IMO the penalties benefiting Brazil and Spain). Maybe they should fine these guys (like in the NBA) using video evidence or even suspend them. Because if they don't most experienced players will keep deceiving refs (and the other ones might be called galllant or naive, or both depending on how you view it, disvantadged in any case...). Also why not use live video replays to help refs decide on penalties, something akin to some video replays in the NBA? After all this is the 21st century, not the 19th anymore, there is technology available...^&grin
I normally much prefer basketball to soccer but till now games have been relatively lively, no boring sleepy nil nil stuff.
