I'm not a soccer fan but I do enjoy watching the WC, up to a point. This WC happens to be on at hours that fit my schedule, so I am watching, but usually with the sound off as some of the announcers drive me nuts. As a result, I have missed certain aspects. My biggest question for you true fans is when do they stop playing the tie games and go to OT or shootouts? Ironically, for me anyways, the best games have been ties, but these are ultimately unsatisfying, so when do they play until someone wins? Thanks in advance. -- Al

I have seen almost all of the games. I agree. The announcers are not great although I like Derek Rae. I’ve been watching some of the matches on Telemundo but not everyone speaks Spanish.

They go to extra time and tie breakers once they enter the knockout rounds, which will commence when all the group stage games (three for each team) have been completed.

Thanks, Brad. I remembered shootouts from the last WC, just couldn't remember at which point they came into play. -- Al

Well, Egypt is done as Uruguay is certain to beat the Saudis.

Russia is building up a head of steam. It’s still to be determined who they will play in the knockout.

Yes Brad, certainly Uruguay and Russia will get on to the next phase. Their opponents will be Portugal and Spain, depending on who finishes first and second on their respective groups. Any combination, however, will bring nice matches! I would love to see a Uruguay and Spain happening, how about you?

Carlos,

Yes, that would be a great match. Either combination will. I'm looking forward to tomorrow's matches.

Senegal was surprising today. I like to see some of the non powers do well.

Brad

Brad, I also like it when a non-power does well. It is still a little early in the competition to say it's a tendency, but the non-powers are performing in an unprecedented way in this World Cup so far in IMHO. Many teams that dominated football in recent years, have performed below expectations in their debut. I hope we will have some surprises down the road, once the group stage games are finished and the knockout rounds begin…

My wife and I lived in Germany for six yrs. So we were happy when Mexico beat them. :wink2: Chris

A typical stressful game from España 🇪🇸

Gracias a Dios por la victoria.

I can relax until Monday.

These teams are not easy. Teams like Morocco and Iran are very tough. The Spanish group is very tight, with Iran still having a chance to move on.

I’m happy los Uruguayos are through.

Wow. The Argentines got mashed, big time. I thought they were one of the favorites. -- Al

Arg is not that good. They barely qualified and that was evident today.

Argentina was pure crap. You could sense trouble when they were playing the National Anthem and Messi looked stressed. That was a tip-off. He never seems happy playing for his national team.

Very happy though for Modric, who plays for my team Real Madrid.

Probably best if Arg goes home, which they probably will anyway.

Latin American teams, other than Mexico, have not looked good so far. Probably only Brasil and Mexico will make it through.

Spot on Brad! Argentina now depends more on Iceland’s next games than on itself. On the other front, there’s a big probability that Brasil (IF we make it) will face Germany on the first knockout round. That 7x1 from the last WC is still looming down here...{eek3}{sm4}{sm4}

Costa Rica put up a valiant effort and Navas did all he could but if you don’t score, you’re not going to win.

Wow, if I didn't have a heart attack today, the good news is that so soon I won't have one {sm4} Brad, today there was a phenomenon here that I will loosely call "collective anxiety" that lasted for the 90 regular soccer playing minutes, and when everyone down here thought the game would be over, 2 goals! Yep, so far this WC is definitely not a soccer-power breeze for any of the former WC champions playing it…

Hi Carlos,

I know that there is something looming that Brazil has to set straight with Germany :wink2:^&grin
Problem is, that they might not get a chance to do so, if the German team doesn’t get its stuff together and plays a whole lot better than in their first game, that they lost to Mexico.
If they don’t beat Sweden tomorrow they most likely will travel home.
Seems to be an issue with the world champions at the last tournaments. In 2010, the world champion Italy went home in the first stage, in 2014 the world champion Spain went home in the first stage, and now in 2018 the world champion Germany ............ {eek3}
I hope not :wink2:
If they make it to the knockout stage, I’d love to see Germany - Brazil.
We see.
As I usually say: May the better teams win :wink2:

I know that feeling Carlos. The other day when I watching the Spain game, I was counting off the minutes and the last few minutes seemed to go on together. My son told me to calm down or I'd have a heart attack and he told me he wouldn't take me to the hospital!

It seems every match for the big powers is hard. There seem to be no easy matches.

Konrad and Brad,

Yes, no easy matches so far... for none of the teams, powers or not (except those playing Saudi Arabia {sm4}).
I'm crossing my fingers Germany (even if dragging herself ^&grin) makes it to the knockouts. I'd love to see BrazilXGermany on the first knockout round...:wink2:
