World War I (3 Viewers)

I complained about FL,s non release of promised WW1 sets, wha la, I didn,t realize I carried that much weight in the hobby. Must of shaken FL right to the core!!!
Maybe Gambale should hire me as a lobbyist.

Only if you've been eating yourself silly since I last saw you in Chicago ^&grin

Let just enjoy all the great stuff out there.

I'm picturing a British Mark I since The Somme ushered in their first use in a Battle, and I really think along with FL that Jenkins is doing a fine job with their Armored creations :wink2::wink2: Time will tell who does one . regards Gebhard

The figures look very good and the French were, on the whole, more succesfull on the first day of the Somme than the British. However, I think I'll pass and wait (hopefully not for too long) for the British Army.

I can't imagine you'd have a long wait at all as British forces made up the bulk of the attacking forces, I think like 80% or more if memory serves .. regards Gebhard

Well, I'll be all in on these new Poilu. The figures look spectacular and appear accurate in all aspects. I am a WW1 Francophile and there is no way I will miss out on these. These will be my first FL figures, but as the WW1 line developes, not my last. -- Al

Sammy, it's my greatest fear come to fruition, FL and the French Army of WW1. I could rationalize staying away from FL (although I do like several of the lines) prior to this, but there is no way I can ignore the Horizon Blue Hairy Ones.:wink2:^&grin -- Al

I would have preferred FL focus on Verdun, have always been interested in the battle even so much as to visit the Battle Field. What a reality check to the human cost of War, you will be moved when walking the grounds. I do however understand why FL chose the Somme, if I live long enough they should cover the War from beginning to end. Unless they keep having to re-releasing the early sets for the collectors who miss the launch for whatever reason then we will never get anywhere:wink2: regards Gebhard

Gephard, there is no reason that the FL releases can't be used for Verdun as well as the Somme. The unis and equipment would obviously be the same. The only restriction would be the French troops that are not wearing the greatcoat, thus restricting their use to the warmer months during the battle of Verdun. At least that is what I have planned for them.:wink2:^&grin P.S. After further study of the photo, it appears almost all (with the exception of 1 or 2) figures are wearing the short tunic, from Col. Dax on down, so warm weather it is. -- Al

Is one of these figures supposed to be Colonel Dax? If so, an even greater reason to buy ^&cool

Brad, I have no idea. I was just being a smart-***. I do remember that Paths of Glory was supposedly about an incident during the Battle of Verdun and that Col. Dax wore the short tunic as the FL figure does. -- Al

Oh, darn. I thought maybe you saw something I didn't.

Germans will be available for pre-order in May with a release in June, to be followed by release of no less than 15 Poliu a month later. A picture of the Poliu is available on the website.

Brad,
Thanks for the pic of the forthcoming French. They look really nice. I will definitely be getting a group of these guys.

Hi Al,
My main reason for wanting Verdun was mostly from a stylistic point of view ie the poses and from the photo's we have seen so far I guess it safe to assume the French Forces are going to be on the offensive charging the German trench section. There certainly is nothing wrong with that at all my friend but I was hoping to see some Assault troops maybe even to see FL do the 24th Brandenburgers ^&grin. I'm sure were both gonna put these beautiful figures to good use :salute:::wink2:.best Gebhard

The only problem I see with the 24th Brandenburgers is that Sgt. Kunze is going to want to conquer Ft. Douaumont all over again, and then Radtke and von Brandis will want in on it and then we have to have moats and the glacis and turrets and...
I still think the attacking troops will be great for the May and June actions and later. The French were constantly counter-attacking. Perhaps the ill-fated attempt to relieve Ft. Vaux? But you are quite right, it is all good and there are plenty of possibilities that will present themselves. :wink2:^&cool -- Al

Hi AL,
All you mention sounds Great to me, I mean who wouldn't want to have a Sgt Kunze figure or perhaps the gallant Major Raynal :wink2:. There are just so many possibilities. I'm more then content to start the adventure just where we are with what's upcoming. Time I have plenty of, money well that's topic for another thread. I'm sure this line will be a huge hit for First legion and go on for years to come .regards Gebhard

I will have to wait to see the DAK's opponents before I decide to jump into another FL range, but the Poilu look impressive. Heck, I'd say they even look better than their Boche opponents.

Dave

I think the Brandenburgers who took Douamont were wearing pickelhaubes with the soike removed - rather than the stahlhelm worn by FL's Somme Germans.

This is correct as the Stahlhelm was just coming into use at the time the battle of Verdun opened in February 1916 and it was not yet in widespread issue as it would be on the Somme in July of the same year. -- Al
