Today is May Day. What better time to unveil some pictures of those Ruskies? For the love of god, let's see them.;)

I will obviously honor Matt's desire not to have the page posted. The link to the iMag is here:

The Germans are all Heer and Pioneers. There are no SS at this point. The sculpting is on par with the Napoleonics and very imaginative - hardly any "standard" position. I think that contrary to the Napoleonics you will only need one or two of each. There are of course the mandatory shooting figures that you could use several times. No figures "at ease". All are very much involved in various combat activities. All figures show "grit" like dirt or torn clothing. There are German and Russian soldiers that are using captured weapons. There are no anti-tank weapons (like Panzerfaust"). The bases are very good - mostly rubble.

Paint job is outstanding on the pictured figures. These would be very close to St Petersburg standard.

Shipping early June.

This is not the only mention of First Legion in the magazine and several others of Matt's products are featured.

I recommend the magazine, even in its electronic form, although the maneuvering takes some getting used to.

For those who can't wait...chew on this...

But wait...there is more...

I was going to save this one for last as it is my favorite of the range so far I think because it's different....

GERSTAL009 - German Pioneer Demoltions Team "Creating New Doors" - Stalingrad 1942

gerstal009page1_large.jpg

Prior to the start of Operation Hubertus in early November 1942, the Germans flew into Stalingrad 5 pioneer battalions specially trained in the art of streetfighting. It was thought that with these reinforcements, the Stalingrad issue could once and for all be brought to a successful conclusion. These battalions primarily saw action in the northern factory district, most specifically in the famous Tractor Factory and the Red Barricades ordinance factory. Often during the fighting, the Russians had so heavily fortified the buildings which they were defending, it was impossible for the Germans to gain physical entry to them with their assualt groups. Two such buildings were the famous Apotheke (the Apoethecary) and the Commissar's House just behind the Barrikady. In the words of Hauptmann Rettenmaeier who commanded the assault of 1/Pioneer Battalion 45 and elements of Sturmcompanie 44 against the Apotheke:

" The most important thing was to create new openings into the house. We had the means for it. Enormous explosive charges would be positioned and detonated at the scheduled time."

Under cover of darkness, the Pioneers stole up to the outside of the building, placed their charges, and then ran detonation cable back to their positions. Once detonated, the Russians were taken completely by surprise and the Pioneer Assault Groups made use of the "new doors" and the Apotheke fell. One more building taken in a battle measured in the conquest of individual rooms. A step closer to the Volga.

Just kidding
Great figures.

If I were running a toy soldier company, this is exactly the sort thing that I would envision. Dead on. Congrats to Matt and George. This line will sell itself based on quality alone. Just wait until we get a look at the buildings and vehicles! I need Hiwis!

Thanks for the kind words Doug; all of the credit on this one belongs to Matt, although he will agree as we've spoken about this quite a bit that Stalingrad is a passion of mine.

Not to digress, but Matt had (key word being HAD) an incredible 20mm version of Stalingrad in another life as part of his WWII wargaming collection. Buildings, factories, vehicles, figures, etc, etc, all painted to a museum quality standard (yes, museaum quality, so they'd fit right in at Louis' place). When he got out of 20mm wargaming, he offered the collection up to me, but like a fool, I passed as I determined I had too much Stalingrad stuff in my collection only (as I write this, I am smashing my head off of the keyboard).

Simply put, I've had the pleasure of viewing these figures for quite some time. They are not, not, NOT toy soldiers, they are miniature works of art IMO.

When I think "Stalingrad", THIS is what I see in my mind.

Matt, you knocked it out of the park on this one.

And for those of you who are attending OTSN, Matt is working on a jaw dropping surprize for that show re Stalingrad, that's all I can say at the moment.........................

For goodness sake. Can some-one scan in the image from TSMF magazine and post it in the forum or can Matt stop playing so hard to get.
I would like to see the full range even if I am not a big Stalingrad fan.:D:D
