Would anyone move to southeast Florida for retirement? (2 Viewers)

I've heard that prices are half of what they were a few years ago. I would think about it but the humidity is not good for my wife's arthritis. We need a place with dry heat.

Does anybody know the Palm Beach county area? Anything, to look out for as far as purchasing a home in the Wellington area?

Jazzeum, thank you for your response. I think I can live with humidity. I was there for a week in June and West Palm Beach/Wellington area is a very nice location. It was 90 degrees but, I was ok with it... Downtown West Palm Beach is very nice and the beach is very beautiful there!

I have a cousin who lives in Celebration, near Orlando, and she was the one who told me the prices had dropped by half.

No help on the home purchase advice, but I have a friend who retired to Titusville (near Canaveral), and he loves the cost of living. He also loves the heat and humidity, so he's happy as a clam. Only thing that bothers him are the hurricanes, though he hasn't been hit hard in a while, and he says you get used to them. -- Al

I actually did retire in Tampa yrs ago and we couldn't wait to leave the area. The heat and humidity are oppressive, no change of seasons, flat terrain with nothing but scrub oak and pine. A friend of mine also retired there and thinks he's died and gone to heaven. He's from the northeast and most people from the northern climates find the winter weather attractive. No state income tax is also nice. Chris

Move to Arizona-humidity which kills me is almost non existent! Prices here took the largest fall second to Las Vegas. True, there are four brutally hot months here a year but the rest of the time is great and I feel like I live in a vacation home as I am about 45 minutes away from downtown and at the 3,000 foot elevation level which is a bit cooler than the posted temps on the newscasts, etc. It really is beautiful here. I think I have flown in & out of every airport with at least 5,000 feet of runway in Florida. There are so many pretty areas but I HATE the humidity so there is no way I will move there and walk around in a wet shirt.

All The Best,
Marc

I retired there many years ago. I lived in Ft Lauderdale, prices of everything change with the seasonal population! As someone else mentioned it is flat and if you like antiques and such you are out of luck!{eek3}

Heat is unbelievable, and with all the concrete around it is easy to feel like a fried egg! Beaches are nice so are the waterways......bugs and snakes are another thing!

The Florida Palmetto Bug (roach) is everywhere, and it's big enough to carry off a small dog!;)

We relocated to Atlanta, you have the four seasons, but mild. Really beautiful weather, antiques, mountains, low cost of living and killer homes. Downside is coast is hours away, but we have nice lakes.....and I am putting in a automated pool system.:)

As for me, I have been to Miami twice, taking a son to and from college. I was there in August and in June, both time overwhelmingly hot, humid, and extremely uncomfortable. I then and there swore off going to southern Florida ever again, as I view temperatures over 70 degrees as purgatory.{sm2} -- Al

As a matter of fact I believe "purgatory" is located on Florida's gulf coast.

I love the change in seasons....
Yes, even some of the tougher winters we have had in NY. It just gives me more time to stay inside and enjoy my hobby, reading and watching old movies.
By the time you are sick of snow and cold spring rolls around and you can watch the landscape turn green. When you tire of a hot humid summer the fall comes in and those crisp cool days with colorful foliage are perfect for walking in parks or around NYC. No offense but living all year round in heat (in and out of air conditioning) can really slow you down.
My parents lived in the West Palm Beach area for almost 20 years but they tried to spend the summers in NY. Some of my friends are retiring to Florida but keeping some residence in NY.
Arizona is great but no beaches and no city like NY. The caveat, however, is the cost of living in NY (metropolitan area) is very high. Personally I need access to a great city like NY, Chicago, San Francisco or Boston (of course there are others).
The suburbs can get boring when the kids grow up and go out on their own.
Perfect scenario would be an apartment in NYC, a villa in Tuscany and a condo on a Caribbean island!

Maybe as a Brit I shouldn't be answering this, however, my good pal also a Brit, owns a beautiful villa situated in the West Palm Beach area of Lake Worth where I have stayed numerous times and fly over there whenever I can.

For me it's an absolute paradise-guaranteed weather; glorious beaches; great restaurants, very friendly natives now that Madoff has been jailed. It's perfect but then again any place outside of the perpetual grey skies of the UK would sell it for me.

I personally would have no problem living there permanently.

Me neither Bob, great weather, friendly people and wonderful food too, throw in Disneyland and all the other parks and I'm a happily retired bunny.

Most of my friends retired to Lake Worth, huge homes in gated communities, Vellagio, Bellagio, etc. There are quite a few forclosers in the communities now.... homes that sold for over $500,000 can be had for less than half.. I would be in Florida yesterday but my wife hates the heat...

I would agree, now is certainly the time to buy....if you are in the market!

Having lived for 38 years in the area before doing a pliskin escape Ill post a few amatuer observations,,,can you stand humidity equal to the temps?try dunking a bucket of water over your head every few minutes,,can you handle the first maniac driving,,at the end of your driveway?the cops estimate half the drivers in the southern part of the state have no license or insurance, drove an oxcart in whatever land they arrived from..,homeowners insurance equal to what your mortgage payment might be?if you can obtain it..The top crime and drug capital of Norte America,,govt meetings conducted in spanish with occasional english interpreters available,,beaches and recreational areas over crowded with third world types on every occasion,,being told if you cant assimilate to the culture "leave gringito",,if you can you fit right in.Best of luck mi amagos mon.Yeah rob,,friendly people who only want a share of what you have.
Make sure those gates in your community are 35 feet high.
