WW1 1914-2014 Centenary thread (1 Viewer)

This rather somber centenary should not be used as some sort of point scoring event. We owe it to the dead to strive for a world of co operation. The British gutter press will almost certainly use this to wrack up patriotism of the narrow jingoistic kind in order to sell papers. That is how they always work. I think all right thinking people should resist this. We would all like the twenty first century to be more peaceful and harmonious than the last

Patriotism with a small "p" then. I don't want it going the other way, with the pro E.U. mob using it to big up themselves. I've already heard talk about wars "can't happen in Europe any more"(conveniently forgetting Kosovo etc.)
I don't want it used to bash people who want a referendum about whether we should even be part of the E.U.

Damian, as if to answer your post , why do they have to still use this sort of headline? It is archaic and not how the majority of Brits feel;

Some times the Germans do get the joke though. I remember an interview the John Cleese, it turned out that Faulty Towers was very popular in Germany at the time but he didn't realise while visiting. He checked into a very smart hotel, with a very polite receptionist. As he was going to his room the receptionist called after him "Don't mention the war!" and everyone around fell about laughing!;)

I agree that Uk should go out of EU, as the majority of british citizens don't want to stay in it, and Uk has an attitude of using what they like of EU and refuse to follow the rest of rules. A commercial agreement is enough i guess.

Kosovo was the last war in Europe and it happened beacuse of the fall of comunism...it was just the end of the cold war...

Just last week I suggested to my better half that next year we could get a new multi media set top box with two hundred hours storage on it. The BBC have just announced that between 2014 and 2018 there will be 130 programmes with 2,500 hours of WW1 material! To amend the line from 'Jaws'...I think we are going to need a bigger box!!!

Great to hear that the veteran interviews for the brilliant 'Great War ' series will now be shown.

But how am I going to tape all this....?????{eek3}

Hope she's not thinking "I think I'm going to need a different husband." {eek3}

Rob, that is a very strange situation. I wonder how two different publishers managed to get a contract on the same book? I look forward to the answer of this mystery. -- Al

Well my hardback copy arrived today Al and it looks a great read. Having got Gettysburg I think I'm going to want Waterloo and Trafalgar next^&cool

Now if he would just do Normandy.........

Alright! Let me know what you think of it. My book club has it for $48 but I haven't been able to pry the money loose yet. My list of 'must have' books is starting to get out of control.:rolleyes2: -- Al

The book is superb Al, you need this one mate!:salute::^&cool^&cool

Along with the normal armistice service at the Menin Gate in Ypre today , there is another special service taking place. Today seventy sand bags filled with soil from the battlefield cemeteries of Flanders are being loaded onto a gun carriage for a journey back to London where the soil will form part of a new memorial garden to be opened next year at the Wellington Barracks, just up from Buckingham Palace. The soil has been collected by children from Britain and Belgium and is the first time soil has been allowed to leave the cemeteries. This is live on the BBC .

Thanks for that, Rob. With Christmas not too far off, I suppose it is time to start dropping hints to family members.:wink2:^&grin -- Al

Indeed Al!:salute::

People say Christmas is Carol singers, Turkey dinners, family together round a Christmas tree , but is there any finer December tradition than sitting across the room from your better half knowing she has a drink, her credit card and your Amazon wish list?!^&grin:wink2:

Even today almost one hundred years since it started , WW1 is still maiming and claiming lives;

Incredible article, and very sad. So many people killed by 100 year old ordinance. The bomb disposal people deserve a huge raise and much more in the way of thanks. So many different types of dangerous shells and explosives and so unstable. Disposal is no way to make a living. I am particularly impressed by the huge size of so many of the projectiles. -- Al

Terrible isn't it. As if that War didn't claim enough lives. These people are so brave and they are working to save lives day in and day out. Seen great piles of these all along the Western front each time we go, even hit a single shell with our car as we pulled up on a verge once. It was obviously a dud else I wouldn't be typing this now!{eek3}
