WW2 Marines - Pacific (1 Viewer)

Everyone:

just paid a visit to the HBO site on the Pacific and read that Spielberg/Hanks stated that this series is again, bigger, BETTER, MORE REALISTIC, and awe-inspiring than anything we have ever done or anyone else. I did not realize that this is 150 million dollars, which puts it in first place in the history of television. Love that trailer too!!!!...............Stryker II

George as always the diorama pics are great. I totally love that set-up. I would love to do something like that but it would take me forever to paint that many figures.

Yes I too have all of Hammel's books and he also does an outstanding job. Have you ever seen any of the official Marine Corps Monographs (history) of the individual island battles? They were done shortly after the war, and the one on the second Marine division is called FOLLOW ME!! It is probably the best source, up until Hammel's Bloody Tarawa, that had tremendous photos of all sections of the battle. Some of it looked like the surface of the moon, pocketed with 16 inch shell holes. Fantastic book!!!.............Stryker II
I used to own all the monographs as well as the individual division histories but all are long gone now. I believe that each of the monographs have been reprinted (Battery Press) as well as some of the division histories. All are quite expensive in their original printings as well as hard to find in good shape. The reprintings are a good deal. Wish I still had the Tarawa monograph as the situation maps were outstanding. Battery Press also reprinted the Marine Corps 5 volume history of the Pacific War. -- lancer

Lancer: sounds like we have alot in common. I know what you are saying, I found that Follow Me at a Louisville gun show last year, and was delighted to pay the 85.00 to get that original printing. I do have the Tarawa and the Iwo Jima monographs, the only monographs I own, but you are right, it IS OUTSTANDING!!!! I think I have Vol 2 of the history of the Pacific War CENTRAL PACIFIC DRIVE. I have probaly 50 books and articles on Tarawa alone--can't seem to read enough about this little 3 mile spit of land in the middle of no-where....................Stryker II

Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it very much. My collection is and continues to be a work in progress, I can't believe how many figures, vehicles, buildings, etc I've actually built and painted, even I am amazed at how much stuff I've got here.

Looks like your Penguins are a lock for the finals, demolishing the Whalers, which the Bruins could not do...........

I just saw the Pacific trailer..I am pysched up. Once you get on YouTube, check out the video game "Battlefield 1943" a fantastic video game of WW2 Pacific invasions. CS, I hope you're reading all of these people just drooling over future Pacific War figures and sets. God bless our troops, living and dead, on this Memorial Day weekend.

In reference to all the good books that have been mentioned in this thread, I have three that are not as reknown as the official USMC books. I happen to have both "Follow Me"for the 2nd division and "Spearhead"for the 5th division. My dad was in both divisions during the war. Those books were his own. The other three books are written by the surviving veteran of each battle. The first is "Too Young to Vote-Tarawa, Tinian, Guadalcanal and Saipan", by Robert L. George of the 2nd division. Another is Ïndestructible" by Jack Lucas, the youngest MOH winner in the 20th century, for his actions at Iwo Jima and the third is "Surgeon on Iwo - upfront with the 27th Marines" by James Vedder. My interest is that my dad was with the 27th Marines, 5th Division at Iwo Jima but first attached to the 2nd division at the battles mentioned in the first book. All excellent reads, from a first person perspective. Great stuff for any Pacific enthusiast and patriot.

Kingtoot:

thanks alot for the heads up on those books, I don't have any of them! The one--TOO YOUNG TO VOTE, sounds very interesting--must check into getting them myself...............Stryker II

Kingtoot: did you get my message I just sent you? I don't know if it went thru or not??..............Stryker II

got it, thanks..let's keep up the interest here. We as the buyer/customer base need to let companies aware of what we really have a desire for. I have a personal boycott going against all mfrs. who feel that they only have to please certain buyers. I did break my boycott with CS Wheat's Tigers and some WW2 ETO sets last year. I recently placed the WW2 sets on ebay. The boycott is back on. Nobody needs this stuff, but they are fun to have, if somebody would just take our interests seriously.

I don't know if you noticed but Hobby Bunker and Figarti have just released some Tarawa figures ( see the Figarti section ): so there ya go! pretty cool huh?

best regards,

Brian

Speaking as a collector and not as one of the moderators, but who are you hurting here by boycotting a manufacturer? If you're interested in Civil War, for example, but are mad at Company A because they haven't made Pacific even though they have some great Civil War that you would like but won't buy because they won't make Pacific, who are you hurting?

From my perspective (and only mine), this is a hobby, something we do for enjoyment, and if we get upset or angry because they won't make our pet interest, it just seems to me that you're letting that ruin something that should be fun. We have enough things in our lives to get really upset about -- our jobs, our kids (sometimes) and our spouse (ocassionally) -- and our hobby, in my opinion, shouldn't be one of them.

I'm curious. How does one boycott a manufacturer that isn't making what you want? If said manufacturer isn't producing what you want to buy, well, you wouldn't be buying from him anyway, right?--lancer

Brian: I think those are suppossed to be WAKE ISLAND figures, although the Japs could and will be used elsewhere. Notice the Marines are wearing WWI helmets, not WWII uniforms?...................Stryker II

I may be stubborn but not stupid, I really think CS is above par in it's line of figures. Glad of it. I am a big Civil War buff, got over 400 in a 54mm Shiloh diorama, mostly painted by myself but I do have some Britains and Conte in it. My Wheat's Tigers are in a special place of their own. These are terrific figures, hope to see more CS Wheat's Tigers and Confederates in the future. I'm not hurting anybody with my boycott but it sure keeps money in my pockets for those sets of figures that smack me in the face when I see them. If K&C made more quality Marines like the last sets they did, I'd buy every one of them. The disappointment is from the talk of future Pacific releases, back from page one of this thread, and now we get told, once again, that it just ain't worth doing. I still have hope that CS will do some. I am not a glossy figure collector, but realistic matte finish. That's part of what makes CS a great manufacturer of figures. Brian - i hope you keep in consideration all of the buzz from people on the possibilities that not just anybody but COLLECTOR'S SHOWCASE makes WW2 Pacific sets in the future. It sure seems to be creating excitement from nothing but talk from your faithful fans. I think you're gonna miss the boat on this one.

Gosh its so awesome to hear the accolades, truly its really nice.

I would be the first to jump on it ( Pacific ), as I was early on. But it sounded so awful when speaking with dealers. I got more than an earful about the Pacific just not selling well at all.

Darn I'd like to do everything, but I really have to be concerned about expenses as we expand. I have new overhead ( new sculptors ) and inventory cost. I haveto be super nimble right now. Maybe down the road of course.

But again thanks so much for all of your great comments.:)

Happy Collecting!

Brian

Brian: I would like to follow-up with what Kingtoot said earlier.

With those krauts you have in hand-to-hand fighting, imagine substituting alot of those same poses with Marines and Japs!! A banzai charge into the marine lines, and a hand-to-hand melee, would be great, and no one else has done it before!!...............Stryker II
