WW2 PTO aircraft (1 Viewer)

Perhaps it might be helpful to focus on a range, rather than a particular model of aircraft. Figarti has it's "Wake Island" and now "Doolittle Raider" projects. Some others actions that might be worthwhile, commercially speaking:

Pearl Harbor
Philippines 1941/42
New Guinea
Midway
Coral Sea
Guadalcanal
Divine Wind/Kamikaze Operations

All of the above events have a powerful association with airpower. I believe that it would be possible to generate all manner of supporting pieces, and that they'd be popular in the USA. Further, If they're good enough, I suspect that they'd work for a Japanese collector, or two, as well.

Wise words. Would the bottom four be more popular than the top three?

LOL, Jack, the bottom four were my initial offering! However, Pearl Harbor also seems quite desirable. Call it the "From Here to Eternity" range!;)

Yes - the bottom four seem more likely offerings. I would be interested in what percentage of collectors like a few bits and pieces to go with an aircraft. You cannot make ships in the right scale but I wonder whether it is worth anyone's time to make a decent range of backdrops as well as figures. I have a 1/48th scale Kingfisher kit to have built and have bought a smaller (much smaller!) model of the Arizona to put in the background so I can have a go at a pre war Pearl Harbour scene. It would be great to have a pre war Hawaii range but its like submarine crew. At some point there needs to be a ship or part of a ship. How about a portion of flight deck with the tower as a backdrop?

The inability to render big chunks of an accompanying warship is a significant limitation, no doubt. However, Figarti did that big honkin' Hornet diorama, so who knows? Because I'm me and constrained by space, I'd really prefer a simpler environmental approach to supporting the models, that being deck and/or airfield sections for the models and pilot/crews. If a manufacturer wants to produce a deck-edge catwalk, gun-tub, or elevator to support the models, I'd certainly take a look at them.

Given how obvious the ideas that we are bouncing around actually are, I tend to assume that the manufacturers see little profit in them. If there was profit then there would be someone making them. I get a bit bored with the seemingly endless supply of German armour but that must reflect the buying habits of the majority, so manufacturers go where the demand is. If there are few carrier aircraft the manufacturers must feel that the demand lies elsewhere.

I hear you Jack, but please indulge me for a moment. There's an outfit called Hobby Master that's gonna release a 1/32 Hellcat in the next month or so:

it's my understanding that they'll make 800 of them, with an eye toward at least seven follow-on models. It'll sell for about $250 (with a stand). While the model will come with a pilot figure, it'll likely be something that goes in the cockpit. If buyers want something better/different, these fellas from Andrea would certainly be a nice option:

However, the price on the two painted figures is $345.44! {eek3}

Clearly, someone wants this stuff and is willing to shell out some money to get it. Thoughts? :)

I wonder if it will be K&C, Jenkins, TG kind of quality. I assume for that money it will be. I would be interested in figures to go with plastic models as a starter to see where a range was headed.

As for those two figures, in the eighties you could have bought a Queensland policeman for less than that!!

Having viewed some pics of the model and compared them with different kits on the market, I've reached the conclusion that it's based on a 1/32 kit from Trumpeter. HM's greatest strength is it's rendering of kit-molds, so it may actually be somewhat better than some of what you see from TS manufacture.

Me too, particularly in 1/32 as that's the most common scale among kit manufacturers.

Yeah, it's pretty amazing that we can buy the amazing array of pieces from JJD for so little cost. I've looked pretty hard and pretty long, and not found ANYTHING so comprehensive in its treatment of a subject as KotS. I don't necessarily expect JJ to bail us out of this situation, but I would't rue the happening, either. ;)

Better than Jenkins? Could there be such a thing?

The Jenkins ground crew are part of a great series but perhaps one that is winding down. Space for the PTO may be opening up. I am getting the Japanese tank from TG in a few days so maybe if it sells someone will give the planes a go as well. That said I have never walked into my TS shop and had any problem finding something I wanted.

Perhaps so, but that was one heck of a flood of quality product, don't you agree?

Given the yen of some folks for the macabre, I bet there'd be a healthy demand for a "baka-bomb" and ceremonial goodbye figures for the driver and his well-wishers. Good luck with that tank, BTW!

The nearest TS dealer is 176k away from my home, and he only carries KC. If I ever walked into a TS shop, I'm afraid that I'd never want to leave, "closing time you say, REALLY?":wink2:

You appear to have a clue on plastic aircraft kits...maybe you could point me in the right direction for a 1/32 scale Dc3/C47....I have searched the net but a large scale Douglas is unavailable....have the SBD which is still availabe but even small scale 3's and 47's are hard to find......heaps of fighter aircraft but not a beaut General Purpose aircraft like the Dak or for that matter a Curtiss C46 or was it a C48 ?......any clue's on a 1/32 Dak ?...cheers TomB

I have never seen a C-47/DC-3 in any larger scale than the Franklin Mint 1/48 diecasts. -- Al

Al...I sadly believe you are correct...I have smaller scale 3's and 47's but have not seen a larger scale model except the remote control versions and beautiful as they are they are too big...thanks for the reply...on the subject of plastic airo 's ...the JAAF fighters you mentioned... there are several 1/32 version's available...including the Radin, the jap version of the Me109 which I do not think was used in big numbers...regards TomB

Thanks for the info on the JAAF aircraft, Tom. I am guessing they must be plastic kits as I keep my eyes on the die-cast and TS market and have never seen anything larger than 1/48, and even that is VERY restricted, mainly from Marushin. I keep hoping for some large scale 1/30 or die-cast, but nothing so far. I am long past putting plastic kits together and painting them. No patience/skill/eyesight.:redface2: -- Al

There's an aluminum version in 1:30:

http://authenticmodels.com/?page_id=462#

However, you'd have to create some markings for it.

And the price is a little on the dear-end of the TS-scale, although, IMO, the material might be more interesting than wood.

Those are some beautiful aircraft on that site. The detail on the C-47 is unbelievable. Never did find the price, but I can imagine.:rolleyes2: I really liked the Ford Tri-motor and the Ju-52, as well. -- Al

Hi Al,

Did you notice the rivet-detail?

Right up our alley, I'd say!:wink2:

The Ju-52 is also very nice, but it's a non-militarized version.

The wingspan on both the DC-3 and Ju-52 is over three feet.{eek3}

The Iron Annie looks very nice and would be a great painting project

Yeah, I saw the rivet detail when I blew up the photo. It is amazing. Looks hand applied as it wasn't in perfect rows. One thing for sure, it ain't gonna fit on any bookshelf I own.{sm3} -- Al
