Your entire life is an ILLUSION: New test backs up theory that the world doesn’t exist until we look at it

Quantum mechanics states reality doesn't exist until it's measured
This means a particle's past behaviour changes based on what we see
Experiment using an atom and laser beams has proven this to be true
How the atom behaved depended on how it was measured at end of test

The universe doesn't exist if we stop looking at it.

This is according a famous theory in quantum mechanics which argues that a particle's past behaviour changes based on what we see.

Now, scientists have performed a new experiment proving this theory to be true on the scale of atoms.
The bizarre nature of reality as laid out by quantum theory has survived another test, with scientists performing a famous experiment and proving that reality does not exist until it is measured

The bizarre nature of reality as laid out by quantum theory has survived another test, with scientists performing a famous experiment and proving that reality does not exist until it is measured

According to the rules of quantum mechanics, the boundary between the 'world out there' and our own subjective consciousness are blurred.
HOW WAS IT DONE?

The team first trapped a collection of helium atoms in a suspended state known as a Bose-Einstein condensate, and then ejected them until there was only a single atom left.

The single atom was then dropped through a pair of laser beams, which formed a grating pattern that acted as crossroads in the same way a solid grating would scatter light.

A second light grating to recombine the paths was randomly added, which led to constructive or destructive interference as if the atom had travelled both paths.

When the second light grating was not added, no interference was seen as if the atom chose only one path.

However, the random number determining whether the grating was added was only generated after the atom had passed through the crossroads.

When physicists look at atoms or particles of light, what they see depends on how they have set up their experiment.

To test this, physicists at the Australian National University recently conducted what is known as the John Wheeler's delayed-choice thought experiment.

The experiment involves a moving object that is given the choice to act like a particle or a wave.

Wheeler's experiment then asks - at which point does the object decide?

Common sense says the object is either wave-like or particle-like, independent of how we measure it.

But quantum physics predicts that whether you observe wave like behaviour or particle behaviour depends only on how it is actually measured at the end of its journey.

This is exactly what the Australian team found.

'It proves that measurement is everything. At the quantum level, reality does not exist if you are not looking at it,' said Associate Professor Andrew Truscott.

Despite the apparent weirdness, the results confirm the validity of quantum theory.

Interesting Poppo... but what conclusions can be drawn from this information.^&confuse Thank you

"At the quantum level, reality does not exist if you are not looking at"....also since I'm just an illusion does that mean next year I don't have to pay taxes???:confused:

Yes known as solipsisme .
First dicussion about this : Georgias of Leontium 400 year before J.C. ( same period as Platon )

No need to wait for quantum mechanics

The problem is the IRS is looking at you, so you exist.

Well, these scientific evidences confirm the Bhudda teachings( and in some way the greek philosophers) about the illusion of all the world things. The reality is made by our vision, but we only see the surface of things, and our vision is deformed by our limited senses, partial, selfish. In reality, everything in the world is impermanent ( all what is born then dies), unsatisfactory, impersonal. So, we can leave all the material things, and the more we can leave, the more we free ourselves from the illusions. The mind becomes clean from the judgments, from the points of view, still and imperturbable whatever happens, because there is nothing to gain and nothing to lose in this world. For example, the ZEN monks see the world as a desert, because with a clear view, nothing really exists. The ocean of existence is just a series of births and deaths, nothing is certain. The world doesn' t exist :)

Several years ago a friend asked me the following; "If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?"

I said of course it makes a sound, and asked him if his request quest for enlightenment included some drug use :wink2:

Okay Poppo I can dig it.

But, the world does exist and has existed long before the ancients thought/philosophized about how we should view its existence. I spent a little time in the mountains of Japan hanging with some monks and what I got from them was how the mind, body and spirit should strive to be one. Likewise, the principles of "Chi" energy dictate that we should be at one with nature and the universe. It was some deep stuff. I also learned that if you don't know how to use your chopsticks well enough you will go hungry as the monks are communal fast eaters who leave no rice kernel behind.

Sure, nothing is certain except sammy's taxes and death to us all in some shape or form and that in it self is not an illusion. However, when I go to that place of peace and tranquility...remembrance...enlightenment...reconciliation...atonement...oneness...reminisce...I can only go there for a small moment in time to enjoy it and sadly THAT becomes an illusion after I open my eyes (or face) the realities of the here and now. These moments that are here and now sometimes shape themselves in memories of mine that are filed away in small moment of what I consider an illusion of how "things used to be" or how "I really wish they would be". I guess thats how I interpet the world compared to your shared article.

Anyway, what is not an illusion...?...well I tell ya...the 20 pounds I need to drop around my gut.

Really....I disagree with the Budda....If you stand in front of a speeding truck does it exist??:rolleyes2:.....You better believe it does or your atoms (which do not exist:wink2:) will be dispersed and rather painfully.....Instead of meaningless empty philosophies of eastern existentialism and seeking to find and embrace emptiness will not lead to the truth...... I would suggest seeking Jesus Christ with all your heart and meditate on His Words then we will find meaning and purpose in life and only then we will know the real TRUTH.....Seeking the mind of Christ and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit of God will result in a spiritual rebirth and enlightenment and give significant meaning to this life.

Which is why I continue to collect Toy Soldiers as part of my search for a meaning to life. I tried religion but found the arguing and debate too confronting.

To true, more meaning in calmly creating dioramas than any religious illusions...go forth and terraform..........^&grin

Brett has suggested I build a dio for the K and C competition. It's tempting but a few things have held me back. Firstly, I don't display any of my sets in dioramas or display. Secondly, I feel more comfortable as a critic. And of course I sadly lack practice..and talent...which is why I'm so good at criticism :wink2:

Not only that place can be peaceful, any place can be peaceful if we don't feel too involved in the the world: all depends on our mind and insight concentration. It takes time, meditation, mind awaken all the time....And little by little, our vision changes! As I said, it needs a constant insight and concentration, analize of all the things, and find that none of them is really stable and important. I have been practicing the cleaning of my mind for more than one year now, and I can say that it works. My vision is changing more and more, and my behaviour as well, of course. The self control improves, the mind stays clear, empty. Neither excited by the good things, nor scared by the bad things. All is fine as it is.:) And this hobby helps for the concentration, patience ans relaxation :p
