Zarriba! Zarriba! Andale! Andale! (2 Viewers)

Randy I think it was these structures that Michael was talking about.

Randy...Scott is right...I was asking if you had come across any real photographs of these tent/straw stuctures in your research...I couldn't find anything except modeler's and artist's renditions...if you do stumble across some...please share them...

Those are British Bell tents made of canvas. These were the mainstay of British forces in the Sudan.

Here is an 1884 Sudan photo of a British camp showing the tents. Both JG and WB make these tents.

Randy...I thought it was something more like these...which I was hoping you could find a clearer picture of...I wanted to make a few of these to go with my buildings...

that's a really nice picture Randy...you don't happen to have any "actual real life" pictures of these type of strucures possibly...as oppossed to a modeler's rendition...in my picture I can't tell what type of material it's made of...

I can't tell if the sides are clay...wood...branches...???

They look like clay to me--a mud hut?

Here is an 1885 print of a Sudanese Village

Types et Costumes: Groupe De Makraka P006158
Sudan. Original wood engraving drawn by Sirouy, engraved by Hildibrand. 1885.

You can see the straw but unfortunately not the sides

I'll keep working on it and post what I find.

I think it is more likely at this date to find prints or engravings of these buildings than photos.

Randy...

I don't want to be your "Pied Piper"...

if you run across something...please do post it...

but don't go to a bunch of trouble on my account...

if it's clay...that would be easy...

if it's straw...that would be easy...

if I have to find 300 twigs that match...I give up...:D

I think mud is a good choice for the bottom part

From a current Sudan site: mud is still in

Residents in cities and rural areas tend to live in mud huts. They are inexpensive to build out of completely local materials, and can be abandoned at very little cost.

Don't worry. It was part of my job for 25 years. Imagine an entire class arriving at the art ref desk looking for pictures for their projects.

Did you recognize the Pied Piper in the picture you posted?:D

No...I do not...

but I'm assuming it's a political cartoon referring to socialism...

who is it supposed to be...

Last 2 for now--both modern

Sudan

1. mud

2. straw
