Yeah, my observation about player-athletes is not a comment on any individual's intelligence. Just an observation about their true relationship to the school.
A running back at Texas, or Penn State, or Georgia, is not as accurately called a student athlete, as one at say, Alvernia, or Dickinson, or Ursinus.
It's OK for the star athlete, too, because his odds are decent to become a pro. But the guys I went to college with, who played football, or basketball, etc, were there for the degree. Their skills helped them take advantage of scholarships, in various cases. But they all went on to complete their BS or BA, then go on to universities, and masters degrees or doctorates. Their experience as athletes is more as something they look back on fondly, generally, something that taught them lessons that apply to other areas of life. I don't think that's the case for the majority of the kids who go through the athletic programs at the top level.

Prost!

Don't disagree, I was actually shocked at how high the Texas FB GPA was. Hopefully it means that a good deal of them are getting a great education for free. That is a benefit. Even there, you are still looking at 10-15% to the pros max to make a living!

The student-athlete designation was always a fraud. They tried to dress it up in recent decades with a lot of meaningless rules, but the reality is that many athletes who are recruited to major sports programs are not academically qualified to be there. They also don't care. Even if they were interested in getting an education and qualified, it is unrealistic given the time commitments of practice and travel. There are undoubtedly exceptions, but the vast majority are in this for money and small opportunity to promote themselves to professional sports. GPA is often a misleading indicator. Some college programs add academic ringers to the roster who will never play, have professors on the take, and/or provide classes just for the athletes like ping pong to satisfy the minimal requirements and bolster GPA.

I am so glad Tennessee refused to pay their freshmen QB the $4mil NIL money he asked for.

Here is an idea, why don’t you take your scholarship and go to class for free?

Get good grades, graduate, get a job and work for your $4mil?

I read Cooper Flagg made an estimated $4.8M in NIL.

Great to see legends Sheduer Sanders and Travis Hunter get headlines by having their numbers retired by Colorado.

Hoping to see punter Mark Vassett’s No.15 go next considering his college football shattering stats.

As they should; look at all the national championships Colorado won thanks to them................

Oh wait.

I didn't get this either. Look, if they go on to have great pro careers, more power to them, but to get the accolade now? ALso, while I think Sheduer is a talented individual, not so sure on his NFL success, it is a crapshoot. Hunter on the other hand has a chance to be really special as I do believe he is generational talent so to speak.
Just my 2 cents

Ok, in the world of NIL nuttiness, Arch Manning signed mini helmets are..........................$700 for the open edition and $1500 for the Limited Hook Em edition.................I believe that pricing is currently higher than both Uncles who are HOFer's and SB winners............................No logic.

I do believe his signature could be valuable, but I also believe he will sign a ton if he is successful over the next 15 years. That means, value goes down as more out there, etc etc simple economics.

Tom:

That is crazy, those numbers simply do not add up.

Potential should never be worth more than accomplishment.

As noted in my previous posts I am not a fan of Deion Sanders.

However he is 100% correct in calling for a salary in college sports.

The one good thing about the NIL and paying college players is that we can get the EA sports college football game again. Fun to play. They had stopped it for a long time because of disputes over money.

Nice to have college football back with all its flaws. My predicts:

Ohio State 38 Texas 27 - I give the Horns credit for going on the road against a top opponent but there is a reason most teams play cupcakes. "Seven win" Sark has recruited a ton of talent but finds a way to blow it.

Clemson 41 LSU 20 - Brian Kelly had this one circled for the entire offseason. It will be great to see him go Sgt. Carter from Gomer Pyle as he gets rolled.

Bama 34 Florida St. 31 - Closer than expected but Bama is too talented.

Utah 24 UCLA 20 - This should be a good one. UCLA is not quite there. Utah is always physical which gives the soft teams fits.

Agree on Ohio State. I think it is a big setup. Rank Texas #1 (why because of Arch?), Ohio St is the defending nat. champs. I think it is crappy that they rank Texas 1, then send them on the road to Ohio State. Good recipe to "re-rank" Ohio State to #1. I honestly think they should have started #1, they won it all last year. I just think Ohio St. constantly gets some kind of break. Anyhow, I do think Texas loses, unfortunately for me.

IF Brian Kelly gets rolled by Clemson, Kelly is out.

FSU - I would like to hope they keep it close, but I just don't have that faith. I still think the FSU program is in disarray.

The last game, agree.

First games are difficult to predict. I wouldn't be surprised if Texas comes out and jumps all over Ohio St. in a blowout. Texas has a ton of talent. History tells us though that Columbus is a tough place to get a win. If Ohio St. can ugly it down to a street fight and use their physical play to wear out the Texas D, they get a close win. Regardless, a rare big matchup early in the season. I just wish it was a night game. These noon kickoffs take everyone a while to wake up.

First half defined by 2 legit penalties against Texas defense and Arch Manning is not in rhythm at all. Ohio state playing fairly clean conservative football. Texas needs rhythm.

On another note did you see where Venables at OK took a million dollar pay cut. Never thought I would see a coach demoted in pay instead of fired.

Oh boy. TOO many mistakes by Texas. Congrats to Ohio St
Manning looked awful. Granted he won't play too many other teams with Ohio St's D talent and crowd noise but his passes were all over the place. Sark clearly had no confidence in him. I was surprised at the lack of playmakers on Texas' offense. No one stood out. They will still crush most opponents but not a championship caliber team.
