Don't care for Notre Dame but respect that coach. He coached excellent even if they didn't play perfectly. Georgia backup was fine the O Line cost them the game. Wth kind of protection was that??? And how about the sideline interference that really changed the fist half? Strange happenings in that one!I guess there is a reason they call it the "backup" quarterback. Georgia got rolled. All four bye teams lost. So much for conference champs.
My point was ASU was a 13.5 underdog and when they went down 16, they could have folded their tents and went home but they hung in there and made a game of it, by far the most entertaining playoff game so far, the rest have been duds.George
Honestly, when Texas executed on offense, the teams didn't deserve to be in the same building, the skill level was not even close. I agree with Doug, had they not gotten arrogant on offense they would have destroyed this team. Instead, they did airballs to nowhere when they got the ball, held it for .2 secs and put their world class defense back on the field. I think it is incredible that Texas defense didn't tire out and their conditioning won the game. If it wasn't for that, they would have completely blown that game, in the end, I consider them very lucky to get out of it based on their own buffonery. I give credit to ASU for their ability to hang around and capitalize, but if I was a gambling conspiracy, I want to know how much was on ASU taking the the 13.5 points and how much was on the over at 51.5.
Unless you watched that game in full, nobody would believe the events that led to overtime. As I said, if Texas simply would have run the ball the second half like they did on their scoring drive, no heroics would have been needed.
If they perform like this next Friday and Ohio State plays like they did, it will be a blow out no matter how much talent Texas puts on the field.
On the Ohio State note - Ryan Day and Chip Kelly are playing/coaching like their jobs are on the line.............................they are.
TD
I think it is odd match ups. Ohio State looks unbeatable right now, but they have to play the game. Texas on paper probably has most overall talent, but the offense and the offensive play calling has been...............well hate to say it offensive. Penn State is kind of stale football, not sure how they match up with anyone, yet they are drawing favorable draws! They have the tight end aka Kelce but not sure I would call the QB Mahomes! And finally ND, can't stand the team, love the Coach, but they may have won today, but honestly, not really with skill, more sheer determination and being the bigger bully (albeit against a wounded team), maybe that is the winning formula. It is a very odd year, each week is each team has a different personality. I don't know what to think, other than Texas could get blown out if they sleepwalk another game. Ohio State skill players at Receiver are 1 play score kind of talent, their QB doesn't have to be great. Texas has solid receivers, but the QB has to be great, it is an odd dynamic. My point was ASU was a 13.5 underdog and when they went down 16, they could have folded their tents and went home but they hung in there and made a game of it, by far the most entertaining playoff game so far, the rest have been duds.
As Doug pointed out, teams with the bye went 0-4.
tOSU, ND, Penn State, Texas left standing.
As a Michigan and Sooners fan, no joy for me, that's for sure.
Would be nice to see 3 competitive games to finish this off, we'll see.
The sideline penalty, which cost Georgia 4 points, and the second half kickoff return cost GA the game. That and as you mentioned the lack of QB protection.Don't care for Notre Dame but respect that coach. He coached excellent even if they didn't play perfectly. Georgia backup was fine the O Line cost them the game. Wth kind of protection was that??? And how about the sideline interference that really changed the fist half? Strange happenings in that one!
Etienne fumble hurt too. Just strange happenings from Georgia, things that usually don't.The sideline penalty, which cost Georgia 4 points, and the second half kickoff return cost GA the game. That and as you mentioned the lack of QB protection.
DougHere are my predicts:
Penn St. 24 ND 20 - Both teams are playing well. If Carter is healthy, the Penn St. D can shutdown ND's running game. This should be an old fashion field position game with the defense of both teams dominating. Close and ugly but Penn St. has developed an effective running game. They also have a better passing offense than ND. They win a close one.
Ohio St. 31 Texas 24 - The Buckeyes are playing the best ball. Texas has struggled against weaker teams. Talent levels are close but Ohio St. seems to be on a mission. I can't see Ewers throwing that long pass to the sidelines for 10 yards that Sark calls over and over. That's a pick 6 waiting to happen against the Buckeyes D. This is a Georgia-like matchup for Texas that doesn't bode well. They still have a chance but it could also get ugly.
Every single team in the semi-final played a home game in the playoff. They should have gone from 4 to 8 with no byes and not seed teams based on who wins a conference championship, just seed them 1-8 based on ranking and go from there.
Oregon really got screwed.
So far, one great game and the rest have been duds.
Credit to ASU, they proved they belonged, how in the world did they let a guy get behind their defense on a 4th and 7 in OT. that was the game right there, too bad.
To take this one step further, I would have rather had an 8 team playoff in the format you propose. 4 home teams (1-4) regardless of Conference winners. Those are your quaters, then semi, then winner.Every single team in the semi-final played a home game in the playoff.
They all had less travel and the chance to build momentum.
The first round should be the bowl games, thus the top 4 teams have the advantage of hosting a playoff game.
Penn. St. should have won that game by three TDs. Just run the ball and throw to the TD. They were up 7 in the 4th quarter and they give up a big play. Then throw an INT. The winner of the Ohio St. and Texas game will be the favorite to win it all.So it's down to ND, tOSU and Texas; some choices.
Death, taxes or a colonoscopy.
PSU lost that game, ND did not win it; that beat up ND line held basically the whole game long, you can't call holding on every play, reminded me of the 2008 Patriots/Giants SB, holding on every play.
The PSU QB completed exactly zero passed to WR's, just incredible.
The whole game changed on that swing pass on the goal line when the QB threw a **** pass to a guy 10 feet away from him, anything decent there and he walks into the end zone.
And why on earth are you throwing with those two RB's and 2 time outs in your own end at the end?
ND scored a TD when two defenders basically fell down; the old luck of the Irish on display.
OTOH, it would be a great sports story if they pull of a championship after losing to a team early in the season that had zero business winning, but the more likely result is they will get demolished vs tOSU or Texas.
I think PSU is 3-18 vs ranked teams under their bozo head coach.
You are spot on, he threw two INT's in the end zone that got called back due to penalties, both were penalties, but they were horrible throws regardless.Penn St. lost it, that is for sure and they actually had the luck during the game. Remember he threw 2 more boneheaded passes that were interceptions negated by legit Pass Int. calls, the calls were legit, the passes were buffoonery at its finest. That Penn St. QB has a pretty large NIL, he sure didn't earn it last night. On another note, I can't stand ND, but I kind of like their coach. Usually I hate both ND and the coach, but this guy is likable. I give him a lot of credit, they find a way to win with arguably less talent.
Now, on paper Texas or OSU should kill them. Georgia should have rolled them even with a 2nd string QB. But they didn't, so regardless of who wins tonight, it could be a game, albeit an ugly one.
As to Texas, again, tonight is all about which of the talent shows up on Offense. And of course, how bad the Texas Line is really hurt. If both starting Offensive Tackles are not 100%, Texas is going to be in for a long night.
TD
I always liked Coach Franklin too. He just can't get that big win and I don't know why. It seems his game plans are effective, but his execution (or players) let him down at big moments. You are spot on, he threw two INT's in the end zone that got called back due to penalties, both were penalties, but they were horrible throws regardless.
He also missed a wide open RB on a wheel route up the right sideline; had he hit that throw, it's probably a TD, he was awful, that last INT was inexcusable.
ND's starting QB gets his bell rung, they stick the back up in there and he marches them right down the field for a FG at the end of the half, the luck of the Irish again.
I wanted to see the PSU DE and TE play one more game, both are sure fire first round draft picks, that DE was playing with one arm and was a beast.
The TE was a man among boys, unstoppable.
